How does she have a black belt if she isn't getting things right over there? I used to do karate and got to black belt but then my trainer moved away so I joined another place and If I had been at that other place the whole time I wouldn't have my black belt by now still. Seems some trainers give belts away much too easily these days.
Aikido have been used by the police for close-quater combat by employing wrist locks/breaks as well as finger and eyes or throat strikes - practice is practice but in actual application ; aikido is a no-nonsense art much like its parent - jujitsu.
Japan has a such Great Culture , Japanese people are so polite then so well educated that we have to pay respect for . Congratulations for this documentary , very well done .

@seckixf in real life aikido has worked many times. much better than for example if u try to be a boxer, because it's more likely the attacker also uses some method of boxing. by using the same strategy of the attacker makes the fight way too evenly matched to feel confident about it. not to mention most likely he's got more muscle behind his punches, because bullies usually are bigger or atleast feel they superior to their target
@seckixf so why do they fall so easily in this video? i'm not an aikido practitioner perhaps it's the purpose of the practise method, to avoid injury and learn correct direction to fall to regain freedom. if u went through hours of practise everytime ur elbow or wrist being twisted to it's maximum would be very injury prone training. i mean they're practising/learning, not fighting.go ask an experienced aikidoka to do a wrist lock to u full power and then try if u can even move a muscle

I just started 2 months ago, and I've been training in martial arts for coming up to 30 years... and I'm a complete gumby/spazzo at Aikido (Yoshinkan), I'm tripping up, getting muddled in my movements... it's an amazing art!

i can't quite see aikido working in real life, as i have never found that people run at me like these pupils do when they try to attack. However, I wish i could believe it is effective because I really like its principles.. its a shame there are no aikido practitioners in MMA so we could all see what it can do, so to speak.

@MrEmoji I think I understand your doubts, I will tell you that Aikido has saved me from harm or death several times, falls from ladders, and once an attack in the night from a large dog. consider this, police train in Aiki, not MMA. MMA has rules, Aikido does not. MMA is competition. Aikido is not competetive ( except for Tomiki style).
An Aikidoka would not step into the cage given a choice, and would not seek victory.

@Jericho11894 Doubtful, but Krav Maga does. It address, blunt objects, knives, guns, shotguns and rifles. Gun to front, side and back. Same while kneeling. rifle to chest, head, etc. That's just to name a few but it has you covered... Battle tested and proven for 60 years. Not many styles can claim let alone prove that. Though, it is not a spiritual style like Aikido which is appealing to many, understandably!

You surly can see that some things are exercises. I was in the army and we used paint balls to train for door to door combat. So Aikido is like a microscope into the heart of movements and person hood. I have trained in Boxing and Jujitsu and kenpo and gungfu. all of these are easily recognized in the aikido advanced training which is the best way to train until advanced age. Some usually discredit others to make up for personal failures.Sorry you feel this way and hope you the best!
@cfrancisco74 It's really practical with the fact that it's easy to modify (adding other techniques like Atemi (hitting with the fist) and gives you a basical feeling and improves the connection to your body and your movements. Aikido in it's purest shape is more likely a philosophical and religious way, but some techniques can be used in real situations, in the shape of Stree Aikido.
Aikido gives you also a basic understanding of levers in the human physics.

You know, for people knocking this, I've been doing various martial arts for about 25 years now...Krav Maga in particular and I've yet to come across a style that's effectiveness isn't based on HOW it's approached. If you go into it with a mind to modern, street-fighting then that's how you'll train...if you go into it just wanting some exercise or for spiritual reasons then that's what you'll come away with. Whether it works on the street or not is up to the practitioner more than the art.
I just have to say, to go to a master and ask to be an uchideshi without an introductory letter is just plain stupid. Of course natl geo had some influence.
I don't know....it looks good, but what if an assailant is just standing in front of you quickly throwing punch after punch at you, what if they don't feel like dancing?
@joenuevo Ya, I know what you mean, but the style of street fighting you most commonly see today is they try to overwhelm their opponent with a flurry of multiple punches while advancing a step for every step you take backwards - or even over run you while punching, etc. They try not to allow you an opportunity to punch back or do anything that would require a stance from which to set something up or throw a solid punch. Most of the self-defence videos I've seen show a guy taking a single...>>
They are not practicing under the idea that they will catch a surprise punch. Watch again, you should see attacks being intercepted during the preperation, or "Draw back" for a follow up attack. Don't forget up until the 60's nobody would teach you Aikido til you had at least shodan in karate. The purpose of this art is life threatened by multiple/armed attackers, and weapon retention. Not street bravado.

It can be in some situations, but martial arts is aimed at so many other things besides self-defence. Martial Arts and street-fighting are two distinctly different things. It's something you devote your entire being to, while street-fighting is a once in a very long time even necessary. Martial Arts is more about mental training. Peace.
@Dr1Canuckchuck 6-8 punches landing. I haven't seen a street fight where one person lands that many punches. Most people are just throwing wide punches and windmill punching.
@Dr1Canuckchuck you would have to manage to even land the first punch in order to get to the next 6...which will never happen if someone is good at aikido...that's what it's meant for; using the attacker's force against himself...other than that, while aikido does not have offensive moves, every time the attacker falls, they fall hard hurting themselves further.
The "movements" as seen here are choreographed. I doubt an attacker would walk up to a victim (even if the victim knows Aikido), with hands ready to be grabbed and be twisted, with the result of him (attacker) being tipped over/off balance, like shown here. No doubt, practitioners of the art are taught to move a certain way & to "watch" for the "movements" of an attacker; unfortunately, most professional criminals don't conform, mind & body, very well to dancing choreography, in duet manners.

There are many people who interpret the art incorrectly and do not understand the significance of it. This is the reason for a lot of criticism. Try to understand, the art isn't an active art of redirecting or pushing energy back at the person. The art doesn't involve pushing or pulling like judo. It utilizes an idea of passive movements to redirect kinetic energy without resistance.
@HenryDavidT The grabbing is just a phase to learn the more advanced techniques, such as open-handed throws. Once you have learned how to do the grabbing element, you can move on.

Aikido is not fake, but to use it effective in self-defence in real life, you require a proficiency that can only come from years of training. As a novice, it is very hard. One is always tempted to force it, which doesn't work well.

You surly can see that some things are exercises. I was in the army and we used paint balls to train for door to door combat. So Aikido is like a microscope into the heart of movements and person hood. I have trained in Boxing and Jujitsu and kenpo and gungfu. all of these are easily recognized in the aikido advanced training which is the best way to train until advanced age. Some usually discredit others to make up for personal failures.Sorry you feel this way and hope you the best!

@cfrancisco74 It's really practical with the fact that it's easy to modify (adding other techniques like Atemi (hitting with the fist) and gives you a basical feeling and improves the connection to your body and your movements. Aikido in it's purest shape is more likely a philosophical and religious way, but some techniques can be used in real situations, in the shape of Stree Aikido.
Aikido gives you also a basic understanding of levers in the human physics.

You know, for people knocking this, I've been doing various martial arts for about 25 years now...Krav Maga in particular and I've yet to come across a style that's effectiveness isn't based on HOW it's approached. If you go into it with a mind to modern, street-fighting then that's how you'll train...if you go into it just wanting some exercise or for spiritual reasons then that's what you'll come away with. Whether it works on the street or not is up to the practitioner more than the art.

@joenuevo Ya, I know what you mean, but the style of street fighting you most commonly see today is they try to overwhelm their opponent with a flurry of multiple punches while advancing a step for every step you take backwards - or even over run you while punching, etc. They try not to allow you an opportunity to punch back or do anything that would require a stance from which to set something up or throw a solid punch. Most of the self-defence videos I've seen show a guy taking a single...>>

They are not practicing under the idea that they will catch a surprise punch. Watch again, you should see attacks being intercepted during the preperation, or "Draw back" for a follow up attack. Don't forget up until the 60's nobody would teach you Aikido til you had at least shodan in karate. The purpose of this art is life threatened by multiple/armed attackers, and weapon retention. Not street bravado.

A fast barrage of blows will easily drain an attacker whether they land or not. Try it yourself. Throw 20 punches with the intent to land and hurt while walking forward as hard and as fast as you can. You can’t breathe, you can hardly see. A good fighter of any caliber will let you drain yourself...>>

@joenuevo Yes, I understand the intent and purpose of all martial arts. Many people seem to make the mistake of seeing martial arts as a means of self-defence. It can be in some situations, but martial arts is aimed at so many other things besides self-defence. Martial Arts and street-fighting are two distinctly different things. It's something you devote your entire being to, while street-fighting is a once in a very long time even necessary. Martial Arts is more about mental training. Peace.

The "movements" as seen here are choreographed. I doubt an attacker would walk up to a victim (even if the victim knows Aikido), with hands ready to be grabbed and be twisted, with the result of him (attacker) being tipped over/off balance, like shown here. No doubt, practitioners of the art are taught to move a certain way & to "watch" for the "movements" of an attacker; unfortunately, most professional criminals don't conform, mind & body, very well to dancing choreography, in duet manners.

The video as seen here was CHOREOGRAPHED inside a house, w/ bread & butter movements on both involved parties parts, etc. Anyone who has a problem understanding that needs to have his head examined. @HenryDavidT The art is relatively young and it was presented by Morihei Ueshiba without explanation. There are many people who interpret the art incorrectly and do not understand the significance of it. This is the reason for a lot of criticism. Try to understand, the art isn't an active art of redirecting or pushing energy back at the person. The art doesn't involve pushing or pulling like judo. It utilizes an idea of passive movements to redirect kinetic energy without resistance.
