The white guy is a local comedian and is on T.V. ads and comedy shows all the time. This is clearly a bit of comedy, admittedly a bit lame and in poor taste, but that's all. The car guards are mostly nice guys just trying to make a few bucks, I always give them something, they provide a valuable service and can make enough to live on this way.

who ever told you that..lied! umlungu is a basterdization of the word "umlumbi" which is archaic Zulu for "magician" which is a word given to white people by zulus due to what they saw as being "magic" perfomed by the first white people...it was things like Western Madicine ( a case in point would be when the white doctor realized that a young girl who was ready to be buried was infact in a comma and resuscitated her)

In South Africa you often find people who guard your car and hope for a tip for the service, the driver disagrees with this. When the car attendant pulls a gun, the driver thinks he will steal his car but all he wanted was a few Rand as a tip.
I'm not sure what lungu means, but sometimes he refers to himself as that as well as the driver so perhaps it's just a word for 'mate', 'man', 'dude' etc..

I agree with u...the white guy shouldnt have called the guard a "lazy bastard" BUT on the other hand, why was the guard going to resort to violence? I mean in many situations that gun probably would have been shot...I know this is just a video but if this was real this white man can be considered VERY lucky. I know he insulted the guard but the reason I say so is because I read so many stories of people shooting another just for a celphone even when the victim is unarmed or an old person.

Mlungu also refers to that white scum you see on the waves on the ocean. That is where the derogatory meaning comes from. It is not always used that way but if a white guy walks through a township you will hear the people referring to him as an umlungu. The aggression in their tone shows it can be used as a racist term.

ja, I hear you, but then its a bit long, and cumbersome for everyday speech sasying "umlungu" is a lot shorter than saying " umuntu omhlophe" (white person) saying 'whites' in Zulu does not make much sense when directly translated, you can't just say " abamhlophe".
and also you must remember that 'colour coding' is foreign to african 'nomenclature'...we thend to come up with names for foreign people, the colour thing was fully imported by Africans

.....it comes from the first encounters of the Nguni people with white ppl, since their (whites) ways , in Medicine, cooking, combat etc all seemed like magic to the Ngunis, hence they were refered to as abelumbi (plural) ...then through the years the word became " abelungu"
