I loved this show ! I have some old VHS tapes of episodes that I won't part with and I have an LP of the winners' album still - lol. Now I'm hooked on American idol and The Voice but this was the one that started it all.
The competition was all fixed ahead of time. We stood in line overnight and the person I was with, who auditioned, has all of 1 minute to sing! Many years later we met a producer who told us the show was a farce!
Imagine if someone like Whitney Houston appeared on that show in one of the first few seasons (particularly season 2 or 3). She would be probably be in an even bigger frenzy today than just the occassional mention.
_____And thanks to the power of the Internet, you never have to leave the 1980s. Watch endless episodes of MR. BELVEDERE, SMALL WONDER and OUT OF THIS WORLD. Listen to Michael Jackson's hits--basically, every song he's ever made. Use miscellaneous websites to order boxes of Mr. T cereal by the truckload and gallons of TAB soda. NEVER LEAVE YOUR HOME AGAIN. The '80s...live on!
This was a great show, always with such an enthralling opening!!! I remember so many of the people in this one! Karen Marie Thomas later cohosted the game show "The "$1,000,000 Chance of a Lifetime", Tony Franklin as I remember was the one who'd defeated the longtime champ Kenny James, and Scott Thompson Baker (who had 13 wins on this show!) went on to soap opera acting. I'm pretty sure that Karen, Kenny, and Scott all won their divisions in the finals.
_____What? He's DEAD? But... But... He hasn't given me my ten million dollars yet! Dude kept saying that I could've won the Publisher's Clearing House sweepstakes. Those envelopes always game with all of those free postage stamps we used to use for improv stickers and what-not... But that's beside the point. Where's mah cash!
This was the predecessor to today's reality shows like American Idol and America's Got Talent. Think of the number of celebrities that got their fame with this show: Britney Spears, Ellen DeGeneres, Rosie O'Donnell, and many more. Ed was the best host of this show and brought it to reality. We will miss you Ed. And now, heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeere's Eddie in heaven with the rest of the stars. RIP.
Sorry Arsenio Hall - Ed McMahon OWNED this show - you were put on a sinking ship when the CBS version aired! RIP Ed - you were a star in your own right!
I remember watching Star Search every Sunday Afternoons at 4 PM on KTVU Channel 2 in San Francisco, this will be the theme that I will always remember when it comes to Star search, I disliked the revival on CBS back in 2003-04. That tanked big time, but this is still the best. Oh, BTW, Ed tried to revive this show but is was called Next Big Star in 2000-2001-2002 before it was cancelled.
I am looking for a singer that was on this show that had the really long endings. He just keep singing and singing. I can't remember, but I think he won that year. I don't know whatever happen to him as I really liked his singing. Anybody know of who I am thinking about?
The theme song was written by composer Joey Carbone. Over the span of the show, it's obvious that the theme music was reworked and punched up to create a more exciting image for the show. I remember hearing it around 1992 and the arrangement was crisp, bold and lock-tight.

no it's not! that sucked! I hated this because it sucked! I can't believe people remember this crap, I barely did until I seen this link. OMG did that ever suck!
I have, but it isn't a raw file - it was recorded off TV with the voiceovers and background sounds, so the same as what you have with this video. I'm surprised a theme like this can't be found derived from the original recording.
You have an Ed McMahon "Star Search?" I envy you, man! J/K!
I used to enjoy watching this theme song up until the final seasons when they started having singers singing the show's theme song towards the end of Ed McMahon's Star Search. Thanx in a million, dude!!!
In according to the intro that Sam Riddle mentioned on Karen Thomas, she will later to co-host The $1,000,000 Chance of a Lifetime with Bay Area Radio Personality Jim Lange starting in September 1986 to the end of the run.
