this documentary doesn't mention the monday demonstrations. At it's peak there were 500.000 people demonstrating in Leipzig and other cities. Every Monday... Apart from demonstrations being illegal and many getting arrested. 500.000 is almost 3% of population. In the US that would be 9 million. In a single city, regularly on monday, illegaly and without formal organisation. A few just started it and and it ever grew then. That's why they originally thought about allowing travel in the 1st place
Gorbachev allowed them to take down the wall! GDR would crush everyone with their tanks if they wanted to. but Russia decided to let the people do what they wanted to do..
Many here are too young to have experienced the fatalistic attitude that came with the very real possibility of a thermonuclear exchange killing hundreds of millions worldwide.
For over forty years two huge superpowers had faced each other with their fingers on the triggers of weapons that would have sent mankind back to the Stone Age.
For four decades the world lived in helpless terror of sudden and immediate annihilation.
@jumpnjza2 You bastard communist... Can't you see that the Berlin Wall was the mighty symbol of failure of the communist regime? Can't you see that the people have the right to be free and not constantly monitored, manipulated and repressed? Can't you see that communism only brings hatred, poverty and stagnation?
@jumpnjza2 You communist bastard... People have the right to be free and not be monitored, manipulated and repressed. Communism only brings hatred, poverty and stagnation. RIP the 100 millions of victims and heroes of the most cruel form of government and brainwashing doctrine.
I'll never forget those 2 nights, the 9th and 10th. They didn't play rock music, they played David Hasselhof :D. I still have a large chunk of the wall from just to the side of the Brandenburg gate, it fell into the eastern side after I knocked it off and a guard came over and handed to me with a smile.
@finnstralian I was there also-on Eastern side at a disco at the Palast der Republik. We get message from others and get get message from someone I know in Stasi and Volkspolizei that all DDR citizens may visit Westberlin. Everyone think it was a trick. Then Herr Krenz came out and announced that the Wall has open at certain checkpoints. Next day, I see Westberliner children giving flowers to Vopo and Border guards! What a wonderful moment! Now, the "Wessies" hate us. How times change quick!
@MsBryanfreeman You are kidding, right? So, it is a video about a key event in European history - but never mind the facts, as long as it is entertaining?! What crap!
Sum parts of the wall sold for big money because of sum art on it.

So Gorbachev was the ultimate Communist.... Or appeared to be in this interview....

So in short, Gorbachev saw the will of the people and said "aw what the hell" and that ended communism.

I can't be bothered arguing with some NATO cocksucker who sees the cold-war as a battle between freedom and tyranny. Go educate yourself.

'Mr Gorbachev, tear down this wall!'
What took Gorbachev so long to obey Reagan's order?
ironhorzmn 1 year ago
@ironhorzmn
Because Gorbachov was not Reagans Dog, he was the leader of a once mighty Union.
