... i did that once... wet runway, not the longest... gusty winds - with a positive windshear during flare the landing was "beautiful" smooth - passengers clapping... while we both tried to get the plane to stop before the end of the runway... we where lucky to reach taxispeed within the last 100 meters...

Went to this airport in 2005. Tupolev's everywhere! Didn't see any Il-86's, but there were noisy 4 engined aircraft flying over our hotel up the coast, so that must of been them!
Yes, in 2005 came IL-86 from Atlant-Soyuz, Pulkovo/Russia and Siberian Airlines to Burgas. But every Monday it came a Boeing 747 from Transaero Airlines - This one has 4 Engins too ^^
Yeah, you are right: Il-86 is really a great plane. But it is getting older and older. The production ceased in 1994, which was sad. I've never had the opportunity to travel on one of these, but I very much want to try.
IL 86s have reverse thrust. You can see the engine outlets for the reverse thrust, called "cascades", at the rear of the engine pods. They are the black sections. The "steam" you see coming off the top of the wings is water vapour or condensation caused by the pressure difference above the wing, compared with below it.
it's so typical of "cold war types" to say things about Russian aviation knowing little or NO staistical facts. It's sad really. I trust Russian pilots far more than western pilots based on training, experiance and types of "hand flying"
something's got me confused...while trying to stop, did it fire retro-rockets by the landing gear or was the light just from the landing gear's lights being reflected by the water vapor?
we should consider how much planes of this type flies for how long and then compare them with other types and their numbers and years of service. than it is relevant..it seems to be safe, but i bet you hell no it is not. so lets measure the right numbers. anyway when i first saw it /and HEARD IT/ i was pretty impressed.
Agree...however we might check also the mileage/age of planes, or how much really flown in regular service, etc. but from this point of view as you write i fully accept what you say..cheers
It's kind of cool to see this big old jet again. I actually flew in it when migrating to the US from Russia. Aeroflot serves good food but the pilot made a very steep decent, enough for people to get sick, including my mom. I assume he wasn't familiar with the procedures and had to make some expeditious maneuvers.
Great Landing. I think everyone of you noticed that steam above the wings before touchdown. I've seen that very often on airplanes, but i don't know why that happens.
Can anyone of you explain to me please why that happens and what that steam exactly is?
the flow over the wings is travelling at supersonic speeds (in relation to the aeroplane) and this is shown by the water molecules in the air condensing, forming a "steam", as the air flows over the wing. You'll see alot of it on fastjets, however in this case it is probably to do with weather more than the speed at which the aeroplane is travelling.
just to add to what amyjefferies was saying. at higher angles of attack such as the approach, the velocity of the air over the wings increases. this lowers the pressure as well as the temp even more. enough to reach the dewpoint. on humid days you can see a cloud form over the various surfaces.
@d2mitry thats only cause they built only 100 of those things. if it was as popular as say, an A330 with 700 built it would probably have at least one accident
I dont think it was a good landing. In such poor braking conditions you have to get it down as soon as possible, ideally at the piano, even if it means harder landing
Softest landing i've even seen.

This kind of smooth landing technic can easily lead into an runway overrun in wet conditions... thumbs down!

I think russian airplanes always land smoothly.
Other planes like Tu-134, Tu-154, Il-62 usually make soft landing on You Tube video.

Lovely bird. Why's there so much smoke at 0:30 ? Il-86 don't have reverse thrust, right? Hm. But anyway, nice video!

It's a steam. Very wet weather :)
ArtemyMSK 2 years ago
But why? Because of Puddles and the aircraft's engines? I see, they suck up the water and blow it into the air. Thanks.

Iljushin built 106 IL-86. They had 1 crash. 14 people died.
Boeing built 1405 B747(-100,-200,-300,-400). They had 41 crashes. 3384 people died.
The IL-86, based on those facts, has got a accident rate of 0,94%. The B747, based on those facts, has got an accident rate of 2,920%
So... I don´t think the IL-86 is such a dangerous plane.

are these turbo jets or turbo fan ? they sound old school

they are not high by-pass. that is why they are different. most modern jets use hi-bypass turbo jet engines.
