The little we know about women's rights before Islam comes from Islamic sources. The earliest Islamic sources are not contemporary either, but of a century or so after Muhammad. The Islamic story claims women were better off under Islam, and it might be true, but we cannot verify it.

Even though Sharia varies according to time and place, generally speaking women inherit less than men, it's much harder for a wife to divorce, and a woman's word or testimony is legally worth less than that of a man. In a rape-case, for instance, a woman must have several male witnesses(!) testify on her behalf or she is condemned as a promiscuous liar. Equality between the sexes is still a goal we haven't achieved.
