I find it hard to see how so many Americans would rather see greedy private companies run their healthcare than elected officials that can be ousted much easier should corruption be uncovered. In Canada, pharmaceutical companies are REQUIRED to allow crown corporations to use their patents to produce a canadian-made low-cost alternative to their own drugs, as part of the socialized medicine system, to help bring down the overall cost of medication and treatment, so instead of paying $100 a bottle, you pay 50 or even 20, depending on the profit margin the company would otherwise make.
That system is presently failing due to government incompetence. Its working now but the government can't keep up with cost of service so services are being cut back.

Alberta doesn't charge Premiums. They ended that last year. Even though you may not have 'benefited' from public health care, you've never had to worry about declaring bankruptcy because of health problems. What Big Pharma has agreed to is this: Under the present plan once a Medicare recipcient spends $3200(not sure) there is a gap of about $2000 where seniors have to pay retail price for drugs. Then at about $5200 senior can return to the Medicare Part D.
The Bill is not finalized -only in debate. I hope drug negotiations are added to the bill.

Countries with successful single-payer also have price controls on drugs and services. The U.S. does not. Insurance company profits account for less than 1 percent of healthcare costs.
While Pharma sold $271 billion in pills last year with a much larger profit margin than any other healthcare provider.

Unfortunately promoting Health care as a basic (free) human right means that people will abuse it. It costs money and resources every time you go to a doctor. If it's "free", people tend to go for the slightest problem or issue.
You get a bunch of hypochondriacs. And for good reason. It's YOUR body, its YOUR life. You don't want to even take the chance this tingle is something serious.
There's little incentive to take care of oneself either. Nurses in Canada see this all the time.

When it costs peoples actions change, your grandpa would shrug off a cold. Is it right? Most of the time it wouldn't be serious. As they got older with more savings they'd spend more for care. Their actions inadvertently made things cheaper for all.

The royalty system for drugs has to be fixed. Right now there's no incentives for cures as you gain more money from drugs that alleviate symptoms. Royalties for cures should be raised (as long as the cure is permanent), and drugs requiring ongoing prescriptions should be lowered.
Those who develop permanent cures strike gold. And those with temp fixes earn just enough to keep business going.

Is it really that big of a leap to just adopt the Canadian plan? In Canada, pharmaceutical companies are REQUIRED to allow crown corporations to use their patents to produce a canadian-made low-cost alternative to their own drugs, as part of the socialized medicine system, to help bring down the overall cost of medication and treatment, so instead of paying $100 a bottle, you pay 50 or even 20, depending on the profit margin the company would otherwise make.

Similar system in Canada the population is double taxed, income tax paid to the federal government, provincial governments charge additional premiums. Right now services are being cut back because the government can't tax the population enough to keep up.
Government is incapable of running social benefit programs you eventually end up with nothing.

I'm sorry, but you are incorrect about the Canadian Health Care system. Not all provinces charge premiums, and the ones that do are negligible (and all are FAR less than you will pay for insurance from a private provider, or worse, the price you pay in the USA without coverage).
Government is NOT incapable of running Social Benefit programs. Look at the enormous advantages of programs in many European countries. Is the system perfect? No. Is it better than private? Absolutely.

Alberta doesn't charge Premiums. They ended that last year. Even though you may not have 'benefited' from public health care, you've never had to worry about declaring bankruptcy because of health problems. Like I said - the system isn't perfect, but considering that illness is the number one cause of bankruptcy in the US, you position is quite difficult to defend. fywacia, you got it absolutely right.

No, the point is that drug companies can charge whatever price they want, and Medicare will have to pay for it. In a reasonable universe, Medicare would use its purchasing power to negotiate costs, as happens even in a free market.

If we would model the European health plan we would save 1 Trillion Dollars a year. That's 1 Trillion !!! .

Medicare Part D is RUN BY INSURANCE INDUSTRY as seniors pay premiums for the privilige of buying drugs from BIG PHARMA and the US GOVERNMENT picks up the Retail tab! By Obama letting the GAP be filled - he is only letting Big Pharma make more money from Medicare. If you are American, Call your senator and demand drug cost negotiation as part of this bill!

Money Talks. If Obama did not have this 80 billion deal from Big Pharma - can you imagine how they could take down the entire health care reform?
What Big Pharma has agreed to is this: Under the present plan once a Medicare recipcient spends $3200(not sure) there is a gap of about $2000 where seniors have to pay retail price for drugs. Then at about $5200 senior can return to the Medicare Part D.
The Bill is not finalized -only in debate. I hope drug negotiations are added to the bill.
