I suppose if his front prop was stuffed or the T'case was knackered it could be 2wd... Defender with Front, Centre and Rear diff lock should reverse out of that.
last time i was there some nutter drove an old foutrak down the HUGE (nearly vertical) sand bank at the back... he made it, just got a bit bogged down at the bottom!
..and i got stuck in that hole too.. very deep, very narrow!
