As I said in an earlier comment, I love this film because of the photography. That last scene was a masterpiece. I won't get into a debate about prison time.
Honestly, the ending made me gag. It would have been better if she had gotten prison time. Of course that couldn't have happened in a Hollywood film.
This is in my top 5 favorite movies of alltime, with two of my favorite stars well three, tierney andrews and crain. You know they really DON"T make em like they used to. But thank God to whoever had the brains to invent photography and then film. I can watch these old movies over and over and over. I can't think of any modern movies, well very very few, than I need to see more than once.
I am a huge admirer of this film mainly because of the beautiful color photography. The concluding scene is a technical masterpiece. I am also a big fan of both actresses. As far as the plot is concerned, Gene Tierney portrays an unbelievable selfish, controlling monster that nobody can root for.
GRR I HATE THIS ENDING! Her sister was vying for ellen's man all along! It doesn't matter that she didn't "do" anything, she completely made you feel it from the first scene that she appeared.
@gjohnsoningary You're coming at this from 21st century sensibilties. She didn't sleep with her sister's husband. All she did was express her love for him in the court room after being berated constantly by Vincent Price's character. Ellen hated Ruth and her hate turned into an obsession! I've seen this before where a person will be jealous of a person's goodness. Ellen always hated Ruth! From the time they were children Ellen hatred for her was pronounced and vicious!
how lucky we are to have these beautiful films . the elegance of the actors and actresses from this era we will never see again . just like gene tierney and rex harrison in the heart rendering film the ghost and mrs muir . that i have as one of my favourites if you click on and watch the final scene of the film it is timeless . what a contrast we have to the sneering smug in your face acting of today compared to these classics .
i would also recomend the concluding seen to the ghost and mrs muir that i have as one my favourites this stands alongside the concluding scene to leave her to heaven. as the most beautiful film endimgs both films starred gene tierney .
Jeanne is among angels now...beautiful and talented women!

@stitchgrl777 No she wasn't. Ellen was a selfish narcisstic sociopath! She cooked her own goose!

@gjohnsoningary Ellen was a selfish sociopath: True.
You don't sleep with your sister's ex-husband: Also true.
