I think that God used men like him to answer the prayers of the slaves. God plans for certain prayers to be answered but he needs to people to carry out his plans. If no one will serve, things don't change.

y is it that john newton thinks God answered his prayers? ru telling me no one else was praying on that boat? what if God was answering sumone elses prayers and it just happened he was on d boat? i guess God doesnt answer black slaves' prayers only white tyrants. Just tickling ur mind.

The fact taht he survived he felt was a message from God telling him what was doing as a slave trader was wrong so he turned away from it. Was allowing the ship to survive and thus allow the slaves to be transported to their final destination to be slaves the answer to their prayers? More likely the ship being blown home to Africa would have been their prayer?

my question was y does he think his prayers were the one answered by God and not the prayers of d black slaves? In itself was already wrong and i think bordering discrimination too. I think this song is discrimination hidden in a song.

Prayer is a private thing. Would a slave pray to be saved so they could be delivered into slavery? Their prayers more likely would have centered being freed or returned home. Why does discrimination have to be a part of the song? If you do the research you'll find other composers havd added versus, so what you perceive as discrimination may not be his lyrics.

if u r in d middle of a great storm in d middle of the sea, i dont think u would pray for ur freedom or for u to be sent back home, i think u wud pray for ur safety where ever it may be, any psychologist will tell u that. believing that God answered a prayer becoz he was white and not thinking that maybe sumone else has prayed for them 1.e. the black slaves is bordering discrimination.

Again prayer is a private thing. He WAS praying for HIS life he was a slave trader the slaves were merely a commodity he was trading. Slavery is the epitomy of discrimination, duh. If the movie was just another case of discrimination then don't watch it.

What you pray for may be private. You pray openly, you can pray for yourself (which he was probably doing)or you can pray for others. Prayer is all about faith either you have it or you don't.

it is not enuf to have faith. the polytheist have faith too, the hindus have faith too they worship cows elephants, just the other day one person in india married a dog, and that is faith too. it is not enuf to have faith. u need to have faith in d right direction. if ur faith is based on a song or a story that is flawed like newton's then its not worth having. it is discrimination right from d start, believing his prayers were answered becoz he was white?
