I wish there was more from this Vintage Getz concert @ Mondavi's Winery--it's one of the most magical Stan Getz concerts I've ever seen--just bliss--instant Jazz Vacation--it transports you:)
so beautiful! i love bossa nova! just found a cool version of the police message in a bottle blended with dizzy's manteca with a bossa nova beat. sax is great! ck it out.
I'm only 14 but I love bossa nova and jazz! John Coltrane and Stan Getz are my heroes! I play cornet and baryton (you can check my channel if you want. Have done a cover of this very song). My mom acctually know Stan's wife. Wanna meet her two ^^. Anyway, this music make me happy, and I wanna dedicate my life to this! (I'm from sweden so my english sucks).
@TheThepillows Oh really? I'm 15 and I've never met someone else in my life who is my age and likes this kind of music! (I live in California) Maybe I should go to Sweden!
@Trebgah - I live in Califronia as well, and I love the young people here. Many of them are so cosmopolitan with their music, they love such wonderful influences...then there are those like you. Maybe a trip to Sweden would help you see the world beyond whatever it is you think you know.
mamma mia *crying* what a beautiful song and what a musician Stan is !!! Sad that my father did not live to see the internet :( as an old Jazz-musician!
Great great great!! When I was in the service in 1965 and down at Newark Airport he was being paged to report to an American Airlines booth. Stan Getz that is. He was great!
It's absolutely jumping time, but who cares? That's live music. Not to mention the fidelity sucks and Stan was rather ill at the time as well, though it's not really he who is out of time. What am I saying? He WAS nearly out of time. RIP, Stan. Love ya.
There was nothing like the sound of Bossa Nova in the early 60's and Stans backup sax made it mellow. Most people today dont't have a clue how popular it was back then.

There are many great tenor sax players (Sims, Jacquet, 'Lackjaw Davis',Turrentine, Hawkins, just to name a few), but nobody ever sounded like Stan Getz.
Stan must have gotten sick of this stuff after a while. Not that he didn't love Latin American music, but to be asked to play the same tunes over and over again was painful. I had a chance to talk with him in New Orleans in the early 80s when I was doing a gig there, and he said if he heard one more request for "Ipanema" he was going to shoot himself.
Hah...that sounds about right. I can just imagine. A few of bluegrass guitarists I know of are getting sick of the same old bluegrass tunes; I guess that's where new music comes from. Studying the basics and getting absolutely sick and tired of them and making something new.
There's stories that Sinatra said the same thing about "Strangers in the Night" and Armstrong said the same thing about "Hello Dolly" I agree at some point it just becomes more about repetition then actual enjoyment of the song.
Ha! Love it. Was that before or after he held up the drug store?
Seriously, you're right. Hard to beat a dead horse to death. Coltrane should have taken melody lessons from him, instead of blowing every note on the horn at once. Space, is essential.
If you're bored with the usual titles check out Stan Getz with Laurindo Almeida. Really suits Stan's lyrical, melodic, rhythmic, flowing style. Recorded 3 weeks after the Bonfa and 2 days after the Gilberto sessions. Beautiful soloing.
