As Jim Lampley said, "A fight almost broke out," but Pernell prevented that, he didn't do enough to convince the judges. Judges want to see a fighter attack. If neither fighter is convincing in attack they almost always give it to the one who tries hardest to attack and that was clearly De la Hoya. .

@ragingbullbouncer I absolutely agree with you, probably the best defensive fighter I've seen in my lifetime but maybe the odler guns may disagree. He turned defense into an art and he made golden boy look stiff and out of sorts. I can't stand these negatives who come in and make comment out of egotistical reasons. . What people don't realize is that when he fought De La Hoya, whitaker was already 20 years in the game literally and for him to move as fast as he does is phenominal.

Pernell Whitaker won this fight. People accusing him of running dont know boxing. Its called defense. And Pernell also landed more punches than Oscar AND scored an official knockdown where if you look closely his leg buckled as he got hit with the uppercut. Still, they shouldve had a rematch in my opinion.

that knockdown was fucked!! i doubt the ref saw it from where he was standing, but from the view of the camera, it was VERY clear that their feet got tangled up. that was the only reason de la hoya went down. whatever, DLH won, as he should have. sweet pea was a great fighter but he was dirty as fuck

I saw the fight live. I didn't watch a boxing match for close to 10 years after this because I was so disgusted with the decision. PW won this fight hands down and was clearly robbed. I just wish Merchant and Roy Jones had been more outspoken about the truth.

@Blackjesus3 Did you watch the entire fight??? I watched it live on PPV in '97 and you can clearly see Pernell won this fight by the punchstat numbers. Neither of them were hurt so whoever landed more clean effective punches should have won; and that was Whitaker.

Not sure if the knockdown Whitaker was credited with in round 9 was legit. Their front legs & feet got tangled as Whitaker hit Oscar with the left, causing Oscar to not be able to regain his balance. It did kinda even things up since Whitaker lost a point due to WBC rules from Oscar being cut by an unintentional headbutt.

anyone who didnt watch this fight in its entirety..cannot judge on this alone..there are parts missing...and in the end of the fight you see that Pernell heavily outscored DLH on the compubox numbers..landing almost twice as much...& with a higher percentage!
while DLH threw twice as much..and missed more than half (due to Whitaker's master defense at evading puches)
the flurries thrown at Whitaker hardly even land..anyone who has this on tape can see that..if not watch it in slo-mo..lol!

what fight were you watching..I have that fight on tape..and what you dont see here is the compubox numbers..how the hell could DLH outbox him..when Whitaker landed more shots and had a higher percentage connect rate!..when you outbox someone..that means you go the final rounds w/outscoring them on punch stats..that didnt happen here..Pernell made DLH miss most of his shots..DLH missed more than half of his puches..and Pernell laned most of his..you dont even know what you are talking about!

everybody is entitled to their opinion some people saw it for whitaker and some saw it for DLH i know it was a close fight but DLH came out clean and if he was missing howcome whitaker got his eye shut so maybe whitaker was winning on points but his punches were ineffective and DLH got the punches that mattered but in the end is only my opinion it could have gone either way but the controversy was not that DLH won but the way the judges scored the fight in favor of DLH
