The south left the union to prevent what we have today, a government that is taking controlling more and more of our lives. The phrase "states right" has to do with taxes. The south was paying most of the taxes and the money was being spent up north. If you don't believe me do a search for "Morrill Tariff."

Slavery was the MAIN argument. States's rights was merely a legal cover for the main issue slavery just as states rights would be the argument in the 1960s when the chief argument was desegregation.

all of these people who insist (still) that secession and the ultimate cause of the war was not over slavery ought to read a newspaper from the 1850s. Southern slaveholders were scared to death that the growing movement against the expansion of the institution would eventually turn where it already existed. Southern leaders said secession was about the protection of slavery in 1861....and didn't change their tune until the war was over.

The main issue with the South is that they payed a majority of the Tariff in all of the US and were not allowed to negotiate constitutionally the secession of the states or Tax fees.

Well you have to also look at the ramifications of the southern states joining the union. The south were financially enslaved to the North providing 2/3 of the government income, who was left in debt by the Revolutionary War.

To say that the North was against slavery was silly, they did not want to free them or allow slavery there because they did not want the influx of black people migrating north. Also Lincoln wanted to send the slaves to Africa or New Guinea to create an all black country.

Saying that the Civil War was about slavery is the same as saying that WW2 was caused by the Holocaust and that the Iraq War is about oil. A lot went into the seccession of the Confederate States such as taxation, minting of currency, slavery, and the list goes on. Even if it slavery was the only cause of the war, that doesn't change the fact that many European immigrants such as my great-great-great-grandfather fought in the grey uniform.

Edav -- right. Run away slaves were probably the biggest issue -- South Carolina's own Declaration of Causes was almost entirely about run away slaves - and how the North states wanted their own laws about it.

Run away slaves were the fittest, strongest slaves. If the best slaves ran away -- only the old and infirm would remain, which would destroy slavery. Run away slaves were a huge fucking cause of Civil War -- according to the official southern documents at the time..

The Union was voluntary, as was secession. Invading, burning and terrorizing the South, then claiming to have "saved the union" is not unlike a woman fleeing her abusive husband, only to have him violently force her to return, and then proclaim he has "saved his marriage"!
