Dweezil can afford to be gracious. He is a fine guitatist in his own right. Thebeauty of the electric guitar is if you give it to 100 guitarists, it will sound 100 different ways. Mozart would have loved the electric guitar. He could write for all those different musicians. ZPZ is my favorite band. great talent and great music.
Back in the very early 70's, I for one, would never have thought that Frank would have raised such great and NORMAL kids. He did such a fine job as a father. His early passing , like so many other fine rockers, albeit not to drugs or booze but to a stupid cancer..Such a pity. But the kids are great, grown and respectable, with loads of talent., I'm proud of all of 'em.
what is funny here is that Jamie Kime in the BG is actually a truly amazing soloist that blows these guys away but dweezil never really lets him shine.
I met EJ two years ago and he is absolutely awesome to talk to. I asked him about future fender product endorsements soon to come out and mentioned that I bought his signature strat and he seemed so interested in what i was saying it felt good. His eyes lit up and he asked if I'm happy with the strat, i politely replied and said, "Eric, I'm happy with anything that's got your name on it buddy". He even shook my girl's hand too. I got her diggin' EJ now!
I watch a video like this, .... and man, ... it's the elegance and gracefulness of youth and age hitting all the right notes. I have seen both these cats and FZ alive and "live" , and blessed to find this video here .... thks for posting this clip. ... and f... age. It's what you do with it, ...... you live it. These guys know it.
I like this. I've seen Eric in G3 and he was seriously drowned out volume wise by Steve and Joe. Here, Dweezil is showing lots of respect and giving Eric whatever room he needs. The result is a great piece of music.
Awesome. I used to hear EJ play years ago in Austin and he always blows the doors off in his humble, unassuming, unique style driven by precision and tone. It's tough to get up and make a quick gig like this work with even a great player like Dweezil, but they both do a great job of working it together. Great video. Thanks for posting. This is what live music and sharing a great time are all about.
Yea, Dweezil is a gracious host and real people. He can play all over that song but let EJ do his thing. EJ is great but Dweezil is as well and has some very diversified chops. The entire ZPZ band are cool with monster chops.
DWEEZIL IS SUCH A GRACIOUS HOST. THE ONLY TIME I HAVE SEEN HIM UPSTAGED WAS BY HIS DAD IN THE 80'S PLAYING WHIPPIN POST AND WHEN STEVE VAI TOURED WITH THE ZPZ SHOWS.
@kebillings that is so true, and also with the crowd afterward. I should post some clips and photos of him hanging around and signing albums etc. for everyone who asked. Very cool.
I finally put some of these still pictures on Flickr. I think just google "flickr markcoppock" and you'll get it since youtube won't take a link in a comment it looks like.
@kebillings yeah...the electric guitar has a bad rep as an 'ego' instrument - just go into any music store at 11:30am on a saturday. It looks to me like Dweez and EJ were having fun.
Poor Eric...looks he is suffering from a bad case of "hunch back" syndrome. Keep that pose up over too many years you'll have some spine troubles....but the boy can play!
@Twistchawa - Dweezil was playing direct with in-ear monitors. Could be the camera taking the video was so close to the stage, it was picking up more of EJ's Deluxe than Dweezil's guitar through the mains. Great show nonetheless.
Fantastic, thanks for posting this! Funny to think he's, what, 17 years older than Dweezil but looks like he's about Dweezil's age. :-) Maybe guitar playing keeps you young, I don't know...

Eric isn't actually bring Dweezil an easy jam here, but Dweezil gets right into it and finds a way
if the sound was a tad better you could really hear how great Dweezil is...

I wouldn't normally comment like this but Eric johnson made dweezil look like he was an inexperienced pupil in a guitar jam.

@TrevorWilsonHimself I agree 100%!!!! with that assessment

Eric Johnson is one of the greatest guitarists alive today. Dweez is the son of one of the greatest guitarists (and composers) to ever live.
This was an excellent concert. I was there. The best parts were when EJ played.
Thanks for posting, Mark. Good camera work!
