  • How much you wanna bet that while Joe Brooks was raping and murdering his poor, innocent victims, he played this song on the stereo?

  • According to Wikipedia, this was the number one song when I was born; if I'd been born a few weeks earlier, it would have been The Cantina Song from Star Wars. Goddammit.

  • @dantheman931 you know whats funny, I actually came here because according to wikipedia it was the same for me and I was also upset I missed Star Wars Cantina by a few weeks

  • This is the Justin Bieber of the 70s... cack!

  • I think I would rather listen to hard core Rap than this Crap!

  • "It can't be wrong when it feels so right." Good one, Joe Brooks.

  • What a nice, beautiful clean song. Unlike the untalented trash of today.

  • I was in junior high school when this song was big. They played it to death.

  • Amazing song, I'm learning this so I can sign it for my deaf grandmother

  • It's a wonderful song, anytime, anyplace....

    thanks

  • I'm 66 & all lit up with this lovely song.

  • Yes you do darling....xxxx

  • 1977 was the last great year for music. This song sure brings back memories. I remember Pat Boone, Debbie's dad, was at the Oscars when Debbie sang this beautiful song.

  • My mother told me this was my favorite song when I was jus a wee Lad... born in '75

  • amazing song

i have to admit, the only reason i found this song was because i was playing a zombie game called "rebuild" and one of my survivors sang it at a talent show they had

  • Just saw her on tv promoting the "Lifestyle" Lift facelift. Debby has a completely different voice quality than her father's, especially evident in the song, emphasizing her strong tone and vibrato. Pat Boone,Marilyn Monroe, Morgan Freeman and Frank Morgan(wizard of Oz) all born on June 1st.

  • I loved this song my friend and I would sing this song, it did not matter that it was song by a white girl.

  • i luv this song it cool

  • When asked who is this song about?..Debby responded..Jesus..Enough said..

  • Hey Jude is better.

  • @dvlkcc

Yeah but if you are truly in LOVE!

  • i wanna cry now cause its true

  • ah, my senior year at high school in '77. madly in love - this song said it all.

  • Sounds like Color of Night.

  • Wow, this song is beautiful...My great grandma gave me a music box with this sing on it and I had no Idea what it was called until now. Very special. <3

  • For Betsy,,,t'was true then and could have beem even now

  • BELLLLLLÍSIMO!!!!!!!

  • This was the most beautiful song of the 70s...that is why I am back listening to it today....there is a reason it stayed number 1 for so many weeks..it touched a lot of hearts!! suzi

  • Hard to find someone who will give light to ur life.. But I have found my husband, thank you very much.. I loveu daddy, JHUN OLUNAN

  • This song was released in 1977 and Debbie Boone won a Grammy award for best new artist for it the following year , I used to listen to this song when I was a young girl. It's still a great love song after all these years.

  • Gracias por ser la mejor mujer y alma gemela del mundo. Gracias por ser muy especial y gracias por permitirme amarte. TE AMO CAROLL GISSELLE con todo mi corazon.

  • fuck who wrote it or why, its a beautiful song and that is my opinion. just listen to the WORDS and and if for any reason you smirk its a good song. dumbass's fight over nothing eoither u like it or u don't its not 4 everyone, like everything else..

  • Beautiful - I'm 86 and this lights up my life. Thank you, thank you.

  • @wae737373 you are 86!! how the hell do you know you-tube?!

  • i can relate to this so much!

  • Es UnA MaMADa De MieRDa!!!

  • I used to have this on a 45 ... :o)

  • My crohns flares up every time I hear this...

  • Wow. THIS was the most successful single of the 1970's in the US?

A decade that had the Stones, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin among others...

    Nice song, but come on!

  • @sugardaddy815 I don't know if you are a musician or not but if you are, you must understand how beautiful this composition is. It is an absolute masterpiece. The average composer never comes up with something this good in their entire life.

  • @MrRockmeister1

I said it was a nice song, beautiful melody, yes. And I happen to listen to a lot of music (rock, classic, jazz...) and no I wouldn't call this piece exceptional. FAR greater songs were composed during the 1970's or even in the year 1977 alone. This song doesn't belong in the same ballpark.

Indeed, the guy who wrote this song never composed anything else in his life worthy of note...

  • @fallswhiteshadow God, you're a dumbass. Don't you read the news? The man who wrote this was a rapist. And guess what? His son killed my beautiful Sylvie. Joseph committed suicide a couple of months ago, probably out of cowardliness and/or shame. So what eightlegs wrote wasn't a made up horror story, its what actually happened. You need to come out of your little imagined world of happiness and get a grip on reality, and fast.

  • STOP TALKING ABOUT THE BROOKS LIKE THEY'RE AMAZING!!!! Fuck you all who think he should rest in peace. He committed suicide because he was a coward, and also because of the shame he felt about his son, who in fact murdered my friend. So stop talking about Sylvie and Nick like you actually know what happened.

  • It is funny how I relate to this song differently and hear it differently. I am just focusing on the song and no other issues. :) The song is good, but this was not her song to have and I can tell by the way she sings it. I can not feel it. I like the song. This song should be remade and someone with heart and soul should make it their own. This woman does not own it. No.

  • Damn Whitney sang the shiiit out of this song!!! try it out!!!

  • Why don't they make music like this anymore?

  • Oh But there is a God last Sunday I almost got Hit

Because I was sleep walking my Paper Route,

I asked to wake me up b4 that Happened again

So don't tell me the Lord don't exist cause I know better!

  • Shame that god doesn't exist. Otherwise this would be a great hymn.

  • Vinny sung this horribly.......

  • RIP THE REV LISTEN A7X!

  • How did "Candle on the Water" lose the Oscar to this thing?!

  • This version sounds eerie.

  • This song was written to the Lord - all the "you's" should be YOU. upper case for our Heavenly Father.

  • Nothing like the original. It's abeautiful love song, but in a contemporary interview Debbie said she was singing it to God. As a pastor it has always spoken to my heart and soul.

  • it's good but westlife's is much better

  • Great! :)

  • This song makes me think of my first serious crush ever. Loved that guy...too bad he despises me; always had always will. :P

  • @TippyTippyTay I can relate to you I had this special girl in fact we went to see the movie at a drive in. Time has passed since then to bad she has changed so much I don't know who broke her heart but they sure did a good job she is so FAKE now. Listen to Someday by Alan Jackson.

  • @grandparolie It's a shame of what happened to her. Heart break can be pretty lethal. :p And it can definitely change a person.

  • This was played at my first love's funeral. He use to throw rocks at my window at might and sing to me. I will always hold this song in my heart forever! R.I.P Markie Servantez. -3 u forever!

  • seems like i remember this song in the 1970's

  • I used to sing this song to my son. He was the light of my life. Now he's almost 35 and he was diagnosed with MS 2 years ago. How sad but he gave me so much joy. This joy still lights up my life.

  • I'm a hopeless romantic !! 86 years old and lost all 3 of the loves in my life yet enjoying the memories that these two songs bring to me - "You light up my life" and especialy "If ever I see you again" by Debbie Boone.

    The movie was great too.

  • @wae737373 Hope you find your love one day :)

  • My mom used to sing this to me when i was little. :)

  • Dedicated to my kids and grandchildren

  • i love you f............

  • I am here because I heard this song on Transformers at the movies yesterday. I love it.

  • To Kelly Dutton: Always remember Just how much I love you!!! Jim

  • Respond to this video... someone special came to light up my way and build my confidence,,though we talk online only...... i love him...

  • @007Crusoe dont lose hope....maybe one day somebody will light ur life again and it wud be 4ever........

remember everything happens with a reason.....

  • This song reminds one of just how drastically music has changed, and not for the better.

  • @TheDesertProphet454 you can thank the nigs for that.

  • This song was voted #1 on Songs I Never Want to Hear Again!

  • @Josephkaeble

I only can agree to your words! I think, you wrote it very very good! I'm not depressed... But my girlfriend is... It's even hard for me, because her family isn't the best ... But i very like this song! To dance and only to listen...

  • Love this song, thanx for posting, some slight inaccuracies in the lyrics, but as I know it by heart...:-)

  • awwwwww :'( this song reminds me of my grandma who passed away this was one of her fave songs I use to sing it her when she was still alive

  • @BubblyOreoCon7 HEY I saw ur cover woah! I understand u were sick but awesome con :) it's in your channel right You L ight Up My Life- Maricon Soledad nice :)

  • eightyeighteightytwo You know what? you're so annoying with your stupidity. You know why? because first of all I come here to listen to this beautiful song and you along with others who are so narrow minded make comments like you did. You know what? I think you need to focus on writing horror stories and get out of listening to music. People come here to listen to music, not to read this garbage you write. Now let me comment on this song. This is the most beautiful song I've ever heard.

  • I sang this with my sister soon after it was released. This song haunts me to this day.

  • hes a good musician, give him some slack.

  • @rayray66 Ok, so we should cut the good musician slack for raping and killing innocent women but not the regular rapist on the street? Give me a break, asshole.

  • Beautiful...Angel Song...

  • Debby hit #1 in Billboard, 10-15-77. God bless ya, sister Debby. Thanx for postin' it.

  • Dont forget the lyrics! lols

  • yes very owsome song that give us hope and move forward our life...........

  • THIS WAS MY SONG TO MY 2 SONS WHEN THEY WERE BORN. THIS SONG EXPRESS WHAT MY HEART FEELS FOR MY GOD GIVEN GIFTS(MY SONS) 2 BEAUTIFUL GIFTS FROM HEAVEN ABOVE. I AM SO PROUD OF THEM TODAY. THEY TURNED OUT TO BE RESPECTABLE GENTLEMEN.

  • Here's the ultimate one hit wonder! Debby never had another hit in Billboard's Top 40, but what a hit! The biggest hit of the entire decade of the 70s. And I can't think of another song that has come out since then that matches this song's beauty.

  • leann rimes sings it way better

  • @halloikbenXD They have completely different styles. How can you even compare the two? Troll harder.

  • @TheresNoEinALLI

get a life weirdo pfff.. no-lifer

  • f0r y0u my l0ve!i l0ve y0u s0 much

  • SHE'S SINGING ABOUT HER DRUG DEALER

  • Forgive me...I thought I was enlightened but I have difficulty comprehending the nature of his alleged crimes, given these lyrics.

  • Nice song! BRAVO~ =)

  • 42 people don't light up my life. 1,018 people do light up my life.

  • that specific way he got himself killed showes that he was after finding himself a better way to get rid of all that jazz.... i'm telling about a BETTER, much pleasant way to get out, than any other has to face. So it pushes me to think about his personality as one that had neeeded a special treetment from itself, fulfilling almost all of his wishes. it is going well with his social role as a an artist but could REALY turn himself to that dirty path as thay told so.... anyways RIP

  • @antonhudiakov wtf are trying to say.

  • RIP....Joseph Brooks

  • Sorry to read about Mr. Brooks.

He'd everything going for him in the 70s. In the 2000's, life really took a turn for the worse in many ways. Shows that everyone is a human. Hope he's found peace.

  • I love you babe :) i always will.

  • HK have a song copy this!!

  • RIP Joseph Brooks

  • @HARDCANDI327 dont RIP him, he killed himself so he wont go to jail for raping numerous women and dont get me started on his son.

  • @TheDVoted you are definitely a very bad human being...You should be a judge.What a waisted talent.

  • @EVEROSFP1 you talkin to me?

  • @HARDCANDI327 You needed to give him more hope to carry on.

  • @HARDCANDI327 Sorry I don't wish RIP to rapists. Thumbs down.

  • @MsHeatOfPassion what did u mean by that?if u dont mind can u tell me.

  • @HimitsuDolls84 Joseph Brooks was a rapist and therefore I don't wish that he rest in peace.

  • @MsHeatOfPassion thanks for telling me. Now I understand why u said that, u don't wish RIP to rapist.

  • 'You Light Up My Life' songwriter Joseph Brooks, accused rapist, commits suicide: cops

  • there was a few womens lives he didn't light up...i think his plan was to float off into the sunset but it backfired (that darn bag wasn't big enough)

  • this song SUCKS

  • I sang this to my ex at our wedding only to find out later our wedding was a farce because he lied to me and was still with his child's mother back home. It was painful when I found out the truth but time certainly heals all wounds. Thank you Lord for helping e to get over it and remain sane.

  • The guy who composed "you light up my life" killed himself. He was facing charges on 11 rapes and sexual assaults

  • @johnyexhale An his son is accused of murdering his girlfriend. Some family

  • I can light up your days,,, and give you hope, but first let me rape ya.

  • Thumbs up if you heard about this song from Joe Rogan

  • @mhregan I heard about this song in about 1977 when it was on the radio and television nearly 24 hours a day for what seemed like 5 years. I'm only here now because the writer just committed suicide awaiting trial on sex crime charges.

  • I'm thankful for this song regardless of who wrote it....

  • music to get raped too

  • Is it me or does this song make you wanna rape people and kill yourself?

  • @MontrealMMA hahahhahah horrible

  • @MontrealMMA hmmmm...no -_- come on man not cool

  • @izziebarrie Oh so the singer DIDN'T rape someone and kill himself? My bad.

  • @MontrealMMA no its not that, just thats a sensitive subject i just think you shouldnt make it seem so humerous, but hey i didnt mean to affend you or anything i apologize if i did

  • @MontrealMMA it's you. Peace.

  • All I can think about when I hear this song is the composer Joseph Brooks raping and killing Sylvie Cachay, writing a suicide note, then attaching a tube to a helium tank connected with the plastic dry cleaning bag and towel wrapped around his head.

  • @eightyeighteightytwo More precisely you don't give a shit about this song, you just came on Youtube to troll about this song's writer. And no, I don't really care about the writer or the song.

  • @eightyeighteightytwo Um I think it was his son who did the whole murder thing...

  • @eightyeighteightytwo One slight inaccuracy. Sylvie Cachay was murdered by his son, Nicholas Brooks. The father, however was facing charges of raping numerous women and took the easy way out. In any case, the story of the Brooks family is tragic, tragic, tragic.

  • @eightyeighteightytwo What a sad way to remember such a beautiful song.

  • @eightyeighteightytwo , with all due respect, sir, your comment is dangerous to any vulnerable person with depression . Even if true---you have no right posting such explict information on suicide where desperate people who came to see this video to try and find some HOPE. The method desscribed above is taught by right to-die activists. Supposedly, only to dying people, but in many cases, these activists don't care who comes to these classes, if they are mentally ill or not...or even if they

  • are seriously sick. Many of them advocate active murder of the disabled. Some people feel suicide is a right, I fought this for over a decade as a disabled rights activist, joining with pro-life Christian, before being struck with the most horrific form of pain there is. For seven hellish years, I watched my depression explode until I didn't know WHAT was was right away anymore, until now when death feels like my only way out, and doctors and psychiatrists do nothing but hand me off to others

  • and tell me to figure it out on my own. No antidepressants work, they give me headaches, even seizures. In a matter of months, I have lost a cat, had my health worsen to the point of being forced to move against my will, been threatened with eviction, fined $50 for small things, gotten MRSA, and had life-threatening surgery where I could have died just from the anasthesia. I don't want my depression sir, but I came to the video to draw SOME strength....and I hear this beautiful song....and feel

  • despair.....and I need to feel hope... I still have supportive friends while others don't know what to me. I am not one to surrender to suicide easily, but I read your comment about the composer and his method of death and nearly threw up....and wept... The last thing this song needs is another with it associated it and you sir, have basically sent a very powerful message to the next desperate people to come here, instructions on how to die. People who want pro-suicide songs or encouragement

  • can usually fight them, guidelines or not, but off all places NOT HERE. I was only six when this song was popular. I doubt the singer would want suicide associated with her work, nor her fans...never mind a string of them....and I may seem strong myself, but now understand despair like few can. I worry more for the next poor soul with mental illness to come here seeking home, to blunder on your--- remark. I flagged this video for your comment, eighty-legs, not the video itself. erase these words

  • @josephkaeble First off it's not sir, I've never been knighted. Secondly, my post was not proposed as preemptive kindling to a hypothetical suicide. It's 100% true, feel free to run a quick fact check. Hell, maybe even do that before you post again. Might as well get mad at Joseph Brooks while you're at it.

  • @eightyeighteightytwo actually, wasn't it his son Nicholas who killed Sylvie? He (Joseph) was charged with 91 counts of rape and committed suicide before he could be prosecuted.

  • at first i had no idea what you were talking about. i thought you were crazy. but what you said had too much detail in it for me to just dismiss, so i looked it up, and you turn out to be right. wow. how can the same man who wrote such a beautiful song like this one, descend to such total moral depravity, and then committing suciide? how sad, tragic, and disappointing

  • @eightyeighteightytwo that makes me like this song even more!

  • @eightyeighteightytwo Correction: It is his son Nicolas who has been charged with the murder- not him. Joseph Brooks was charged in 2009 with luring 13 women to Manhattan to audition for movie roles, then drugging and sexually assaulting them. As far as I am aware, he was not charged with murder before his suicide.

  • @eightyeighteightytwo Is he or was he a friend of yours?

  • good night Joe

  • Sweet!

  • R.I.P.

    Joseph Brooks

  • นอนไม่หลับ 555 บางทีก็อยากกลับไปเป็นเด็กอีก มีอะไรหลายๆอย่างที่น่าจะทำได้ดีกว่านี้

  • this is one of my favorite songs ever sence i was a child.

  • Dear Tommy & Wendycita & Debbie Boone

Thanks for Lighting up my Life

    You're The Best :)

  • To all you Darlington Falcons alumni, Spartanburg Methodist Pioneers fans, and San Diego Padres fans: This was the #1 song in the USA when Orlando Hudson came into the world (December 12, 1977).

Tose Proeski - Light Of My Life

  • I remember listening to this when I was 9 years old at the ol Tasty Freeze. They had a pinball machine and a jukebox. When it was #1 on the charts, it played consistently on the jukebox. Very postive song! God bless Debbie Boone! Thanks for posting!

  • When this song came out my Dad wanted the lyrics, so I listened to it over and over until I had it all for him. Then the sheet music came out. But it was a labor of love. Now when ever I hear this song I am reunited with my DAD who is now in GODS hands.....Thank you for posting this song

  • rumor has it Debbie Boone made a hit out of the song "You Light Up My Life", the words of the song were written by a woman who worshipped Lucifer and wrote the song to Lucifer.

  • One of my favorites for a life time, it's been 35 years and still love it like the first day, is soul inspiration. Thank for sharing

  • i have a music box that plays this song.

  • love this song.. i am so happy to finally hear it again and again....

  • this had always been my # 1 song ever since 1977 & I was only 9 yrs.old then here I am at age 43 I still love this song I once knew how to sign this song!

  • this is the new piano piece my teacher gave me. and it makes me teary-eyed playing this on the piano

  • Wow, learn how to to write lyrics. The song goes "Alone in the dark, BUT now you've come along and the word is Adrift not "at drift". Also this song is lame and cliche. People who remember and love this song from 1977 are sad sappy suckers. Those who will argue that I'm wrong are simply suffering from an estrogen overdose and should seek a mental health professional immediately.

  • @showersmoker Wow, you sound like a very unhappy person.

  • @showersmoker ...Yea,, people that find anything to rain on others joy are suffering too from a serious condition! From a bitter heart that cant let others experience joy and hope. It amazes me that I believe there are some folks who just are so empty in life that they look for other people to condemn and hurt.. This song is beautiful to who believes it beautiful, If you dont,, that is fine, but to try and take that from someone show some serious depravity in ones own emotional wellness.

  • This was a great song. It has stood the test of time. This song just makes you feel good inside.

  • sooo relaxed
