@LinuxBruiser Mehh, I'm a gentoo fan over here. Once you get it set up (and once you get it set up right ;) ), then it is rock solid, and it is verrry fast! I love it!
He said the computer will boot up faster off of the livecd because he has it installed on the hard drive as well. this is incorrect, the livecd will load into the ram as usual and use the ram like usual it will never touch the hard drive even if you have an install of linux even if its the same distro/version/flavor.
Ubuntu runs off Debian. Distro selection is just selecting apps. They are all Gnu/Linux. Take away the apps (which you can install or make yourself anyway) and they are all the same. I support all versions of Gnu/Linux because anything the nux makes beats Mac and Windows. "I'm a PC" commercials bother me because if you were a PC you'd be a linux PC. lol just ranting again. Peace!
I'm running Mepis 6.0 (the same version as Steve Dotto is running here) on my 1999 Compaq Presario 5365 with a 450 MHz AMD K6-2 and 256 MB of RAM. (6.0 is the latest version that this computer will run.) It's very nice! It's not fast (as you could probably guess) but it's faster than Windows XP was when I tried it on this computer. I love it!
hey dotto dude how do you download the stuff from the comp because now ubuntu doesnt tell you how to do a tutoril video. On how to download mepis on a disk and image thing, if done so please tell me the link...
When microsoft was born, Bill gates dream was to create an operating system that had "windows" hence the name windows 96, 98, xp, vista, etc. Once it was out, people thought that microsoft didnt fully get the picture, then they created a similar but more friendly operating system called... LINUX!
It´s free, you have no license problems. You don´t have problems with malware. Plus a little bit of change is what we all sometimes need, I hate that windooza logo, it depresses me.
Linux is pretty annoying if it doesnt completeing remove XP from your system. As long as XP is still on the HD, linux is pretty much a program operating off of XP platform to me.
K-meny. How but that!. It's just like windows. A s-load of pre-installed garbage you'll never will use.

no good linux distro has a root users anymore just sudoers
CraZy675 11 months ago
@CraZy675 every distro still has the root user but on most of them the password is not set which means you can't login as the root user directly.

linux rip start menu from windows!

every desktop needs a menu that lists installed applications. you want to argue origins, take it to Xerox.

Linux was made slightly before Windows and had no desktop. It was originally DOS-like (with a bit better filesystem and shell)
Xero9364 2 years ago
i never knew that... thanks. My comment fits exept for the date linux started
Jamessharpshooter 2 years ago
umm... windows is older, you are thinking about Unix. Mac OSX is closer to Unix than Linux.

I think you need to wikipedia the differences between an operating system and a software program.
Jamessharpshooter 2 years ago
No i dont need to. Operating Linux on top of another preexisting OS is simply gay.
