If I was a music teacher, I would turn kids on to good music even if I had to be creative to do so. Genius takes musical risks. The Doobie Bros. themselves are unique because they mix rocknroll riffs, jazz rythm/winds with blues types chords that utilize mixed timing & keys that are outside regular music theory. I think it's cool to think outside the box and a good education in how to express art/music/talent. Especially for what looks like a kids class project - its not MTV. Rock on
Clearly the group didnt understand the song? It is sang like a broadway show lol. Before singing a song make sure your understand the meaning and the kid with a mouth solo is just laughable and inappropriate. You are never gonna see a pianist pickup Beethovens Fur Elise and put some funk and speed to it because he clearly knows the mood.

I have to admit this vid is pretty cool. At first I blew by it but curiosity got the better of me. Glad I checked it out.
BTW, I default to Doobie Bros, Doors, Santana, Clapton, Hendrix, et al for "comfort music" since 1968. So, compliments to the a cappella group for giving it a shot.
Besides that, why are you arguing about the merits of the Doobie Brothers on a video featuring an a capella group? Shouldn't they be applauded on THEIR merits?
Strange, those who take issue with a cover of their precious "Long Train Running" still clicked play. It's only rock and roll and it's open to interpretation, like it or not. These so-called "establishment" kids, no matter how "white" they are, obviously had a great time and the audience enjoyed it. Any criticism is rendered pointless.
Granted the criticism was a little harsh but Dude your logic is flawed. The fact that these kids had a great time and the audience enjoyed doesn't make the criticism pointless. Following that line of reasoning, if I did Wagner's Ring cycle completely on Bongos and Tambourine and filmed it in front of my frat buddies, the fact that they cheer about it would not negate the criticism of Wagnerian purists.
And I don't know what your background is but a capella ain't rock and roll.
I wonder if everyone how has such a big problem with it being done A Capella would bitch hearing my high school marching band play it. Because they do.
OH NO, IT DOESN'T HAVE WORDS AND IT'S PLAYED BY FLUTES, CLARINETS, and BRASS!!! Oh NO THE HORROR!
@SteveBashakis agreed, I think it only sounds good with a guitar bass drums, and maybe a keyboard. The actual a cappella would be fine for other songs, but I don't think its fitting.
sp "Priveleged" check out the Doobies version, throughout the song Tom Johnston never once feels the need to bust a pose. The reason, too busy wrecking the house with his guitar would be my guess.
What I hate about a capella is it tends to be white privelaged University students wrecking some classic rock song that was designed for multiple guitars and a double drum kit. No its not enough to pretend to be a train at one point or have the human beat box do a solo, the song was never about that. Its like a cake where you take out the beaten eggs and the wheat that was ground into flour... all thats left is the frosting, sweet yes, but in the end unfulfilling.
Absolutely, art most definitely is a form of expression. But when you take a great piece of art like Long Train and make a shabby cover of it and completely lose focus on the meaning of the original that does not become art by extension.
And I am not "Bitchin" I am lamenting the loss of the culture of my youth and that it is being co-opted by such straight laced establishment types. It's not bitching, it's whining, there is a subtle difference.

Gosh, the Doobies were such the poster boys for rebellion and social chance! How dare anyone besmirch their legacy of improving the planet and curing leprosy!
How exactly is any meaning lost in translation here of that great philosophical treatise 'Long Train Running'?
Loss of culture? Huh? Where is it magically going to? Should we start wearing flair leg jeans and long hair again lest we lose the notion of such style?

The Manhattan Transfer version of the Doobies classic.
Perfectly horrible.
The background shim-she-shon is abonimable.
The lead singer is mediocre, and has no idea how to convey the tragedy in this song, because she doesn't understand what the song is about.
Why don't you guys stick to tunes from Mary Poppins?

@Mikester61 Tom Johnston didn't pose.
He didn't give a shit what you thought of him.
All he needed was his guitar and mustache, and occasionally, a bandana.

what's funny about art is that it's a form of expression.
of course it's not the original composition, it's not supposed to be... which is why it's acapella, probably sounded better live.
oh yeah, and quit bitchin'

I mean granted your entitled to your opinion,
But I've got admit it was extremely harsh.

Knuckleheads.

@Mikester61 This is a song about the tragedies of poor people.
And no, suburban, middle class college babies
white or black have no capacity to understand or convey the lyrics.
The Doobies played to an urban white underclass, that doesn't exist anymore.
