  • I looked at a pair of the Ray Ban Caravan originally, that are similar and they are very flimsy. The Ray Bans are more like glasses from wall mart. I didn't know about RE and bought a pair of AO pilots. They are all metal (no plastic) with glass lens. They are built like a tank. I don't have any RE to compare them, but they are they best sunglasses I have ever seen. I'll add some RE in a different color to my list to check out next.

  • @Rynnakkokivaari76 - I have several pairs of both AO and Randolph Engineering and can tell you that - for my money - Randolph's stand head and shoulders above any others. The finish of the frames and the effectiveness of the premium mineral glass lenses are simply better than AOs.

  • Great video on a fine product. I've always appreciated the quality a superior pair of sunglasses provides, especially on those super-bright sunny days when having excellent shades makes the difference between squinting and being uncomfortable and feeling at ease, eyes relaxed, and able to just forget and enjoy the fine weather.

  • Great info - I'm into boats, but it still makes me want a pair! Once in a while, the boat does tend to fly! (just kidding) Great job!

  • I don't know anything about AO 'Original Pilot Goggle 58' sunglasses - they are certainly not current production AO sunglasses. I have the dealer's list and nowhere on that list are those found.

Today the only AO sunglasses with glass lenses are the Beta and Delta styles, NOT the Original Pilots. Also, if you compare the AOs side by side with the Randolphs you will find that the Randolphs are much stronger, have better construction and will last longer.

  • @JetAviator3 I am convinced, you are not looking at the facts, and are simply smearing AO's because you are a Randolph dealer. That's pretty dirty pool and smacks of insecurity with one's own product. You said you don't know anything about AO Original Pilot Goggle 58's - you said it all right there. I'll be sure never to buy anything from your website.

  • Of special note, the WWII era bomber pilot @ 1:06 would have been way before Randolph Engineering, which was founded in 1972. American Optical has been around since 1833 however. Ray Ban is owned by the Luxottica group nowadays, so you're just paying for the name, and the fashion primarily.

  • I've had both Randolph's and AO's. Randolph's come in a fancier hard case, and I think come with a small tool kit now, but essentially RE's and AO's aviators are built to the same high standard, so the AO's are hardly second class, they're the originals. I actually prefer the AO's as they seem considerably lighter on my face, but are made with the same materials, and the construction is nearly as sturdy as the RE's if not just as. And sturdier that 99.9% of other sunglasses out there.

  • @LateNightCable

Actually, I have both and the Randolph's frames are much more substantial. AOs use plastic frames and lenses, Randolph uses metal frames and glass lenses.

Big difference, well worth the monty.

  • @JetAviator3 If you're "AO's" have plastic frames, they aren't the real deal, because the classic AO 'Original Pilot Goggle 58' style has always had steel alloy frames and glass lenses. I have them, and they are very sturdy. Unless you specify Polycarbonate lenses, which are also available on Randolph's, they always have glass lenses. The frames will also have indentifying stamps on them. Remember, a hallmark of both RE and AO is that they were/are built to military spec, meaning no cheap stuff.

  • i have many glasses. Randolph Aviator, AO Original Pilot, and RayBan Caravan. they're all for pilots, they're looked alike, and they perform well in flight. Randolph is the most luxury, AO is simple, and RayBan is the lightest. Randolph and AO prouds the wearer. but RayBan fits face perfectly.

  • @steelwingsrider

They are NOT the same - Ray-Bans are polarized, and made of plastic, as are AOs.

    Randolphs are far superior.

  • @JetAviator3 not al raybans are polarized dip shit

  • @JetAviator3 Negative Ghostrider...Ray Ban G15 aviators are NOT polarized, and are in fact made of glass.

  • As a private pilot I can definitely relate to the need for a good set of shades. Excellent explanation of why so many pilots love Randolphs.
