  • What's up with the sync problems?

  • Hello! what is the difference between this and black one?

  • It is the most beautiful C64 of the world.

  • Damn dude you build yourself a fuc*ing nice goa synth amazing:-))))))

  • I'm listening to this through my new home theater setup, and holy cow, this one shakes the house.

  • The Case is LEGENDARY!!!! ;)

  • Maaan i got the thx system logitech and f----k when punching full its crzzzyyy....

    I looove this c64 sound..

PLZZZZZ make more of this i punish my neighbours with it hehehehehehe....

  • If you want more rez, try reducing the osc level.

  • Yeah this is some good shit, you rock man

  • ooowwww noo.. this is really a MIDI BOX

  • I wanna build similar unit.. so how many SiD chips have you used for this one?

Could you send to me some build plan or imprints? Please for contact :)

  • That sounds beautiful.

  • awesome shit!

  • awesome chap, friend of mind just built this unit but with only 2 chips.. still sound pretty mega all the same!

  • djhirsty( This is a mod-ed com64 you know that right) all you have to do is take out the keyboard, put in a 2nd sid chip add the .aux out puts that are sold online. I have one also (:I love the sequencer built into the prophet chip) my runs the mssiah newer version of the chip set

  • as an old c64 phreak, I just love the sid sound. This is wicked!

  • may I have that 1 : )

  • How was this thing made ????

Can I buy a kit or plans or something ???

    like really man!!

I looked on the mididbox page but it doesnt give much away

  • very cool! I aprove ;-)

  • you're God

  • SID TILL I DIE !!!!

  • Great alternative for expensive sidstation. Thank You so much for sharing this project with all. Soon i make my setup, soon. ;)

    Much Love from Poland

  • That is so cool, it looks like you have taken a synth rack and mounted it into the shell of a c64, if it really is the sound of the c64 filtered, then the c64 is very much underestimated.

  • @DJKickstarter

There is no C64 inside the box anymore, only a bunch of MOS SID C64 synthesizer chips. Theyre triggered by the "Midibox" midicontroller designed by ucapps :D (who is some sort of underground synth/midi god!)

Anyways, im currently obtaining sids for my own midibox, already got 6/10, cant wait...

  • i just cant tell you how good that sounds to me! so good

  • great stuff!... is all of the percussion being generated by this same unit?

  • A-CID!

  • @omniputance

    Asid House :-)

  • what for a fanthastic Sequence,great ...5*****!

  • Soundgasmic. There's nothing else I can say.

  • I've seen this SAME EXACT COMMENT of every c64 i've looked at.....you are a spammer go away. noone cares about you

  • Hah so after this, I dLd all the Hubbard/Galway tracks I could find and listened to them back to back....

  • fine Mitch&Dane tracks! they are my favorite

  • Oh gawd! Just realized that that's in original C64 body... I got a real C64 in my room, and it's awesome. 5/5

  • Soundgasmic.

  • fuckin-A !

  • Did you design and build this yourself ?

    If so you are a genius ! ! !

    5***** ; )

  • Its a Commodore 64 keyboard in disguise. 5 stars.

  • where can I buy one?

  • I want to buy one if that is possible?

  • PHAT! (I know.. old description, but it is)

  • would love to hear how it sounds flat, no reverb.

  • Can we buy that machine or did you really build it ? Awwesome ...

  • do you have backlit logos on the back? If so, that's a nice touch :)

  • sound like Daft Punk's Bassline ;)

  • it has a nice sound.

  • did you ever try to move more than one virtual knob with a single mouse? ;)

  • Ok, it's your cumbersome workflow... So please post the demo where you are doing the same sounds (especially with the filter parts), and please also measure the time it took to create this. Once this is done, do the same with Bassline Demo #3 and #5. I cannot believe that any VST is able to emulate the typical SID sound so accurately.

  • @ucapps Ever heard of a MIDI control surface?

    I'm just sayin'.

  • @ucapps Monotony.

MIDI-equipped Commodore 64s and SID emulators allow for the composition of sophisticated game-like tunes very quickly. And they don't have to cost much or anything at all.

Free VSTi and the likes of the MSSIAH can do the job for a fraction of the cost of new whizzo software.

Click my name to view TOLERANCE SUITE FOR THE VITRIOLIC ENLIGHTENED!

  • @ucapps welllll.. any vst environment worth its salt will allow you to create a single mouse control that will drive multiple controls. And desktop knob controllers are super cheap.

But I hate software. All my gear is 100% computer-proof.

  • you dont know what your saying

i have all kinds of vst's including reason' Thor

and theres nothing to compare to

    a real synth

a real synth sounds x2 \ x3 better that a computer virtual instrument.

i tried a nord wave \ virus ti\ v-synth gt and theres nothing to compare to the sound quality\accuracy

even a synth from the 80's or 70's sound better than a virtual instrument.

  • Just like any analogue synth, the sid has its own unique character.

Its much filthier sounding than most soft synths,

the closest you will get to the sound is by using the Quadra SID VST, and even that is an inferior emulation of the sound chip, compared to the RESID emulation!

  • i has teh 8X-MIDIMASTERFULL NINJABOX 3000

  • cool.

  • so rad!!

  • it is similar to Tb303 sound... cool!

  • I think you forgot to read the portion where it said "sound." I have a x0xb0x and the beginning portion does SOUND SIMILAR to a 303.

  • i'd love to use the midibox sid in conjunction with a real 303 filter someday to see just how close you could get it. I'd imagine its the filter is what makes the 303 so good.

  • @TTestamenTT

    no!@

  • @CoolColJ24

now that I'm a little less noob I can say you're definitely right! :P

  • @TTestamenTT Not quite that similar, but unique nontheless. Even cooler than blindly emulating the 303.

  • any of these for sale? I wish i could use this for some of my productions .D

  • Strictly D.I.Y. only. You should just build one. I hand a clue of electronics when i started and now im getting there.

  • about how much would you say it costs to make one of these?

  • Great sound, I love these Sid synths!

  • I've just bought a C64 off ebay with the intention of making a synth/MIDI Controller out of it, can anyone direct my to the source of the kits you can buy, or any info at all cheers!

  • Without any modification you could try one of the many SID music editors. They require a bit knowledge about the SID chip itself, so you better ask some of the people doing music for it. You might also try "Goattracker" which is a cross platform tool to compose SID music. But beware: Real SID sounds a bit different to the existing SID emulations on PC, so it's always a good idea to check the Goattracker compositions on a real C64.

  • did you ever figure that out

  • quiero ese aparato

    ...

    maldito

  • FUCK YEAH!! exactly how it should sound...you rock the bassline holmes!

  • awsome!

  • I think Ill go for a midibox 64 project

-that is true -you only have to follow directions

this thing rocks! - I want to use something like this live.

  • too bad these things are WAY WAY WAY WAY too complicated to make- you have to be a uber-geek to make one of these - too bad,Id rather pay a geek to make me one.

    bad ass sounds though

  • you don't to be a geek...you just need to have patience...

  • You need to be an uber-geek to INVENT/CREATE one of those! Not to make one from kits! :D

Pretty easy when you're following the footsteps of the genius that is TK!

  • now go a make an 12" of it

  • FilterGain Decay ... a session it is yeahh..

    This is a nice vid....

  • YES!!! YEEESSSS!!!!

  • sounds beautiful, i want one!

  • what da hell that cannot be sid???????

  • sid is fat as hell i'm getting up to do my midi box soon ;d

  • sweet track! are the drums and all coming from the sid?

  • no, there was no drum engine at the time I recorded the video. In bassline demo #3 they are coming from the SID

  • awesomeeeeeeeeee

  • nice tune mate and nice finger work lol i like it i really want one of these things

  • how much n where does one acquire such an instrument?

  • This is truely awesome!

Can you sell me a kit to build myself one of these? I need everything except the sid chips..

  • ughhh another noob comment.

He did not buy this, he designed and built it himself.

Hes using the Bassline Engine, (one of many engines he designed for this synth).

The purouse of this engine is to Emulate the TB 303 like Rebirth does, its just an extra feature of what this synth can do.

The fact he got the SID chip to sound like Rebirth is an honour for him.

Software will never beat hardware in terms of feel and control.

  • rofl @ russia

  • Does that mean Commodore 64? Cause that is what it sounds like!

  • You know what this MAJORLY reminds me of... KMFDM - Megalomaniac (Cherry Bomb remix), find it on their EP called "MDFMK". Crazy stuff!

  • SID simply rules, no matter if 6581 or 8580 (although I prefer 6581 because my favourite SID tunes are made for 6581, the filters man, them fiiiilters!).

  • Built in SEQ, and it is gonna shock the world!

  • Can the V2 sound this warm or are the filters and stuff very different? I really like the sound of this one but if I'm about to build one I might as well do the V2. However I couldn't really tell with all the other sounds going on in the V2 video. Maybe you could show the same pattern on the V2? Thanks

  • Well I'm looking in the V2 manual now and listening in to the demos there. Nice.

  • Are you saying that a substantial part of the sound of the midibox comes from something other than the SID chips?

    If so, please explain.

  • I'm not saying anything. I was asking, hence the question mark at the end of my post.

  • ok. I just thought you knew about filters other than the ones on the SID chips.

  • Ok. Maybe someone who knows more than me should sould comment on that. Meanwhile you might want to check out the manual at the web site. It sounds amazing in Poly mode!

  • It's the pure filter sound of the 8580 (not 6581) SID. In the v2 demo I added a feedback pot between Audio Out and In, therefore it sounds different. But this mod isn't software related. Yes, with the v2 firmware you can produce exactly the same sounds (and more, since there are more sound parameters; especially the bassline sequencer has been dramatically improved for better interactivity :)

  • V2 can do everything this can and more.

Hes using the sids built in filter in this video, in the V2 video he uses a feedback potentiometer, which is an addon/mod to the MBSid, which is sort of a stronger filter.

Take note he has eq and delay added in this video too, so that could add to the warmth! ;)

  • Thanks for your comment. I love all the sounds in the manual and the fact that it can control synths via CV (hopefully I'll be able to control a SH101 with it) So I'm gonna build a V2 when I'm off work this summer. :)

  • This is not showing off the amazing sounds that the SID chip is capable of at all. It just sounds like a rubbish 303 emulator. You could have done sooooooooo much more. Shame on you.

  • The purpose of the Midibox bassline mode is to emulate a 303. If you look at the title of the video, you will see that's what the video is about.

  • acid O.o cool

  • spellbound

  • to get fatter sounds, that includes the drum samples, and to use it as a multi instrument, to play more melodies, basslines at once.

8 sids just goes beyond chip tune really.

3 channel Sid tunes sound thin at the end of the day, as much i love them.

  • hey there ucapps, well done on this- it blew my mind the first time i saw it. im really interested in getting one of these, but have absoloutely no chance of building one myself. would youi at all be interested in making one and selling it to me for a sweet profit? thanks x

  • in this demo a PIC18F452

Please note, that this is a very old video - I mainly wanted to demonstrate the user interface. Meanwhile a MIDIbox SID V2 consists of up to 4 microcontrollers (PIC18F4685), and can control up to 8 SIDs... see my website for details (unfortunately I'm not able to add links to a comment, but I'm sure that you will find it ;)

  • Only 1

  • you dont mate you DIY build!, go scrap a C64 and whip out your soldering iron FTW! :-)

.... alternatively go buy a sidstation

  • does the sid station sounds the same ?

  • Well yeah, it uses the SID chip for its synthesis.

  • damn i want one of those babies! where to buy?

  • you have to build it yourself go to ucapps for some very vague instructions on how to build it

  • Fukn ORSM!...Kick ass

  • brilliant machine!!! do the timing errors come from the vid or from the sequencer?

  • They are related to the ADSR bug of the SID chip. This is an older video where I've used an early version of the MBSID bassline engine. Meanwhile there are workarounds for a flawless envelope. :)

  • Excellent pencil-case Groovevbox ;) :D Lovely matrix xD Is this a DIY-pack..?The case & all stuff?

  • this bass we're hearing...is it the 8085 or the 6581?

  • It's an 8580

  • Yes, in this demo bass is played by a SID, sequenced and modulated by MIDIbox SID. Drums are played with an external sampler.

In bassline demo #3, everything is played by 4 SIDs

  • So, the bass melody is constructed ON the midibox? Is so, i didnt know that :) But where? On the LCD? Or on the matrix?

  • Pure sickness. Shit rips!!!!

  • I keep watching this over and over. I like it more than 303, somehow the sound is grittier and more alive, again - NICE!

  • Excellent stuff! Now I want one. :)

  • This is quiet awesome actually. Are you running bass melody line from a PC via midi or what do you use to program the keys?

  • I'm using the integrated sequencer

See also the most recent bassline demo #3, where some additional details are explained :)

  • fucking shit

  • Beautiful, I love the SID. It can do so many great sounds and not just cool basslines. Where can one get this machine? Uh I hope it is cheaper than a SIDstation *g*

  • you can't "get" it anywhere. anyone and everyone with a midibox had to build it themselves.

  • the never ending loop on the evergreen box. thanks for keepin alive :D

  • Could a nice person tell me what i would need to start a minature studio up..interested in House,R&B and Hip Hop...

would like a VERY GOOD drum machine to start..ANY IDEAS??? help a man who wants to make music !!! Holla..

  • Go get a copy of reason or ableton live, its the easiest way to start.

  • long lives the SID-chip !

  • awesome! :D

  • BEWARE THE POWA' OF THE C64 ^^ , i love the C64-sid chip , it's one of the best sound chip's ever =3 5*

  • I hope you've noticed that there is MIDI too ...

  • I think pure MIDI sound's a little to stiff , the SID can give that really nice 8-bit touch^^.

  • awesome! :O

  • :O

    I WANT 800 of em!!!

  • I want one of thoose..

    Where to buy ?

  • This is unbelievable what he can do with C64 after some processing :D

  • woow can i have this thing

  • kicks ass, nice!

  • how much does that one cost? its exactly what im looking for- can you make basslines just with that and software on your pc? all i wana do is make basslines with a few sound effects ive got loads of gd ones in my head that i wana make

  • More demo videos please. I love this!!

  • Does this use a real SID chip ??

  • Yes.

  • I wish I had all of these gadgets.

  • Well done, man!!!

  • do you need a input from the MIDI to get this to work??

and were can i source 8580 from i can find any C64. well i have but i'm not spending $150+ just for the chip

  • yes, the pc send midi notes to the midibox, the midibox then makes the sounds

  • Sid chips on a C64 are normally either attached by a socket (which in that case, the SID can be easily removed with a pair of IC pullers), or soldered in. In my experience, the best way to remove the soldered chips is with desoldering braid.

  • Awesome!! i think i need to make one. good beats, more vids please!

  • Awesome , there's no way around it . JV

  • sorry aximaxi - thats wrong!

sid ,commodore sid, sid station , sid chip. google this !

  • Sweet!

  • sweet ^_^

i begg for some commodore i hope some of my friends will have 1or2 :D

If you buy c64 boards, do it carefully! I bougth 3 on the net and the sid was picked out. Always ask for picture of the sid before you buy the board, or the sid itself lol :D

btw really cool video, be proud of it!!!

  • I love THAT Frog..its great mod for c64 ;)

  • affascinante magico.... do they sell this magig thing... altro che tastiera

  • Hot.

  • what does it cost WITH hardware interface kinda like yours? And/or without (via midi)

  • it's documented in the MIDIbox SID V2 manual of my website

(sorry, I'm not able to post URLs here)

  • midibox dot org :)

  • very good!!!!

  • Mmm interessante se non sbaglio il SID 6581 era l'integrato sonoro del commodore 64.

Vorrei capire cosa è stato fatto per ottenere il suono.

  • yeah we dont understand that =D

  • Fucking Great! Keep your Noise Man

  • very very nice!! please link for sid format?

  • You can't turn this into SID format, the hardware inside this C64 is completely different from the normal machine. There's a synthesizer inside, not the original computer.

  • Man, If you read correctly the technicals docs of Commodore you will find that the original SID is a true Synthesizer.
