@070000591 I had a "wax on, wax off" this moment this morning, when I realised I could still pull off a mean gedan barai 9 years since I last trained; and thought it would deadly used not as a block but as a double strike to the groin.
awesome! this young lady is now my favorite cause! how sad are these people that they need to insult a child that has worked hard and does her best? have they learned nothing from the arts? my deepest respect for the young lady and best wishes for her future!
@mauiboynokai : Sure, you have to know the kata and elements, as they are prerequisite for advancing in rank. I'm just saying, that in competition, she would get lower scores and final score would be lower overall, because element she is showing is still too rough and don't flow smoothly together. Granted, she's still a kid, but with her rank, you'd expect a better performance.
Maybe I have too high expectations, but in my club, we took advancement placements rather strictly. The end result was, we were one of the top three favorites at the competitions. That speaks for itself. And in our dojo, for advancing, the requiremets for advancing were only katas and elements, although it wasn't unusual that yellow belt knew not only kata for orange, but also green belt, even if he or she was allowed to advance only for one belt (in this case, orange.)
@OxAxS In karate, almost every technique is a hit. The idea of gedan barai is to strike the inside of someone's calf so hard that their leg starts to spasm. That alone should be enough to disable someone long enough for you to run but you can follow up if you so desire though it should under very few circumstance.s (such as if he had a gun in his pocket) where it would be necessary.
blue (which should be violet) at that age is ok, trust me...but the inequalitiy of her belt is not "wrong" or something, but normally only the dan grades do wear their belt like that
@SerbStef It's very easy for kids to quickly advance in grades. There are kids around her age in my dojo that are brown 3 and 2. It's when you're older when it's difficult to advance because much more is expected from you at an older age.
thats the old fashion whay, try do it the goju-ryu style. if you pull your fist up to the top of your head and descend from there, it will protect all your body.
@extreme100rpd Exactly, it's the "traditional" way. For tournaments many dojos tend to manipulate the techniques to better suit a competitive environment. When learning karate, you should learn the traditional way so you have a solid base that you can work on.
... with katas, she is very good, but with the elements alone... there is a plethora things that could be done better. Hopefully, we'll see improvement, when she will be older

@yaoikitten23 thats great, but i don't think this is about you or your dojo. it's about a young lady and her proud parents and teachers.

@MrDeluxerfly Hehe, how comical. It's a block my friend not a "hit". It's a downward block usually followed by a straight to the chest.

@extreme100rpd Shorin-ryu (traditional) does this as well. It is only the commercial and sporting dojos that state otherwise.

@yaoikitten23 Kata is all that matters to advance in rank (unless it's a sporting dojo where participation and success in tournaments is a prereq.)
