Nah...! He was a schmuck who couldn't carry a note in a bucket. Hank Williams could have taught him all about singing. "Goodbye Joe, me gotta go, me oh myo; me gotta go get the pirogue down the bayo'"
That's music. Not this caterwalling Italian stuff...
@jwahh Your insult is too subtle... I don't get it. But your intent was no doubt funny, and a great put-down. You opera listeners are too smart for the rest of us. You gotta listen to Hank, George Jones, Buck Owens... those people can sing. Not this howling, sissy Italian shit.
@Lafforte Thanks for stopping by, Cletus... but a lot of people like this kind of music, people from all walks of life, nationalities, etc. Ever see the movie "Breaking Away"? This song is featured in it. Great movie, about regular people. No one is saying opera listeners are smarter but they probably aren't going to Buck Owen's "Act Naturally" and telling the listeners there that Buck is a twangy hick and they should listen to Carmen or something.
So, "people from all walks"... You really think they're big on opera at Joe's barroom? Methinks you don't know of what you speak. (The character in the movie, BTW, was portrayed as a bit pretentious with all his Italian affectations--because of the connection between his passion for bike racing, and the Italian cyclists who came to town.) All that stuff about opera in Pretty Woman is as phony as a whore's kiss.
@Lafforte yes, "people from all walks" enjoy pavarotti. i listen to jazz, opera, and classical. and my 2 favorite bands happen to be the misfits and as i lay dying.
I have the fondest memories of Pavarotti. Growing up without YouTube, without having heard the likes of Tito Schipa and all the rest, we were glad of him.
@crapfacejoe Gigli was one of my father's favorites, hard to hear the greatness in Caruso's voice the recordings are so bad, Lanza was a better actor than serious operatic tenor. But Caruso is the only other tenor who could have been as extraordinary as Pavarotti, and I am relying on historical reviews and writings. :-)
@Bret6464 Rely on your ears. Critics hated Lanza because he did not make a career out of opera and sold out to hollywood, but he certainly was an operatic tenor and nailed his recordings with one try unlike most tenors. His live sessions are even better. As for Caruso he's a legend, even the old recordings can't conceal the richness of his voice. Pav is empty, use your ears. You've got al lthe recordings online, why bother with the articles.
@Bret6464 He's good, but there are 6 or 7 other tenors that were much better than him. I don't think I'm being disrespectful by making such a comment.
@crapfacejoe Who are the 6 or 7 other tenors? You are entitled to your own opinion but going against such a popular thought warrants some kind of questioning and skepticism of your judgement regardless of it being right or not.
If Pavarotti was a criminal, THEN superficial people would say : "His appearance shows!" But You see? He was so subtle, so fine, so sensitive, so touching, so moving and above all HE WAS UNIQUE! No one could sing like him! No one!
The way Mr. Pavarotti builds the ending to this beautiful song to a huge climax, then just STOPS! STOPS! for what seems like an eternity (actually? 3 seconds), makes eye-contact with every person in the audience, then triumphantly showers them with the last notes! What class, what feeling and love for his audience and the music. None like him before or since. RIP Luciano. Sing for me when we meet again, please!
I have listened to this video over 100 times and it's just as beautiful as the first time I heard it.

Pavarotti had a fantastic VOICE, but - in my humble opinion - he didn't always give the most musical performance...
Listen to this lovely music, sung by for example Tito SCHIPA and Alfredo KRAUS!
A cordial greeting,

I can name five others that are superior to Pavarotti on this piece such as Lanza, Caruso, Gigli, Schipa, Bjorling

@crapfacejoe All six are magnificent, all had their own style. I especially liked Caruso and Bjorling.
