@MrFastcoyote Its a very very hardcore rehabilitation program, and it has such a heavy hint of irony in it. Mainly, he wants his victims who have done bad in the past to learn a lesson about not abusing life and the gifts we have for being alive for personal gain or destruction of others. In his case, killing others and then not feeling truly sorry for doing so.

Most of the traps Hoffman or Amanda make are traps that you cant get out of. Like the angle trap. Kerry had the key but she couldnt get out. They make traps for revenge. John (Jigsaw) gives people a chance. So if theres a trap where you cant get out of even if you do anything. Then you know its made or designed by Hoffman or Amanda

Jigsaw wanted Seth to FEEL the utter helplessness of his victims - even at the cost of his own life. Making the horrible choice to crush his hands created HOPE of survival in the face of terror - putting Seth at the level of his victims (who had desired mercy.) Seth expected fairness and mercy in return, and this was denied to Seth as he had denied it his murder victims. Tough lesson!

@TubeFreakJonas - the trapped wasnt designed by jigsaw, it was designed by detective hoffman as revenge against the guy for killing his sister and he set it up to make it look like a jigsaw trap. Jigsaw later captured hoffman and told him what he did was wrong.

@TubeFreakJonas Still, the basis behind Jigsaws traps was if you do the tasks, bloody though they are, there is a way out, Seth had no chance of surviving as it was rigged to be inescapable.
