  • Hi, by switching over to Toyota difs, could you retain the full floating Land Rover Axles?

  • @carlos45703030 Hi Carlos, Are you using coil or leave springs? All I did was making up some mounting points for the leave springs to hang on and that was it. Still the movement as with the original axles.

  • @mnzgp Thanks for answering, dad´s is a 75 Diesel series III (slow and noisy) and it´s 100% stock still using the original leaves. I asked because one of the Landy´s strong points was the ability to run using front wheel traction even if the rear axle was broken ( a not so uncommon event in the series). This you couldn´t do with Toyotas due to their sealed axles, their broken shaft would slide right off the axle casing and leave you marooned anywhere needing a tow.

  • @carlos45703030 No problem. On the hilux diff the wheel bearings are pressfitted to the shaft, so it won't come out that easily. In fact I damaged my rear diff and had to take the rear propshaft out and I selected 4x4, locked the hubs at the front and I was driving around like that for over a week. (smoked the front wheels once or twice once the turbo kicked in...lol).

  • @carlos45703030 I have done some crazy things with the Landy and the diffs handled it well. Broke the hilux manual box 3 times in 5th gear so that's why I replaced it with the Lexus tiptronic autobox. Pretty bullet proof!!!!Also there is noting holding the sideshaft in the centre portion from sliding out, so even in the event you snap it, it should not go anywhere. Hope this helps mate!

  • @mnzgp Well it seems like you are having fun with the old warrior. stay well and happy trails.

  • Great Landy!

  • that would HOOT!

  • that not a landrover its a toyota

  • I find it funny that you upgraded to defender doors with a series as here in the uk most of the Defender owners get rid of the defender doors for series ones as they don't freeze up in winter not to mention they are ALOT lighter.

  • @loudtrout Ha ha, yes but down here in South Africa it's very hot so I don't have that problem and I can wind the window down all the way. My "old" doors were stuffed and could not find two doors in good nick. So far they work well!! Cheers

  • Felicitaciones muy bueno

  • @TheDefender1998 ¡Muchas gracias!

  • Hi, very intresting work, but i dont understand the need of a s III 88" frame and so leaf spring... good engine, good diffs, etc,. But coil springs would be better.

  • @pakkioos Hi, thanks for that! The thing is the Landy belonged to my dad and and he then passed it on to me. It's a Ser II A and so I was stuck with the leace springs. Coils would be better yes! My next project will be a coil spring one.....

  • Great vid, my series 3 is in pieces at the moment :(

  • @mnzgp sweet haha boks not looking good! Haha will be horrible if you don't get through to quarter finals ! England not looking good either. I think nz has got a good chance this time round. Need Carter on though haha

  • @SNHization GO Bokke!!!!!!!!!!! LOL What a tough game it was!! Yes you need Carter, very good player!

  • @mnzgp cheers thanks. Is the transfer case hilux?

  • @SNHization Yes, Hilux transfer. Watching the game between my Country's Bokke and Samoa!!!!! GO Springboks

  • So is the cab fowards mostly defender?

  • @1949bug Hi, yes the doors, firewall and everything fwd of that is defender. Straight bolt on. My Landy is a 1961 model and most of the parts fitted to it is from '98-2005

  • @mnzgp Looks really great! Ive just bought a series 1 88", but dont think it would appreciate the same treatment. lol

  • @mnzgp hi mate did the hilux axeks go straight in with no shortening? what transfer case and gearbox? Im guessing custom machined drive shafts? Also did you do custom engine mounts? cheers mate and hi from new zealand

  • @SNHization Hi there bud! Axles went in straight so the track is a bit wider than original Landy track. No mods to axles except to weld some mounts for the leave springs on the bottom of the axle. Let me know if this helps. Cheers from Ozzie land!

O and for the gearbox on my SWB I had to move the gearbox crossmember to suit. Proshaft then also very short as you can see.Removed the original engine mounts to fit the ones I've built.

  • omg i love supras and land rovers and you combined them you are actually god!!!

  • Very cool land rover. Beautifully remade. Well done!!

    but OMG the music.... :)

  • @yahoodlums Thanks for the comment and yeah was thinking about replacing the sound track...lol

  • @1johnpritchard , if i was you id get a cheap one and spend money on it, last year i bought my first landy, a series 3 for £3000, 3 months later i all completely broke, iv had to spend another £2750 to fix it

  • Hel, die landy lyk baie mooi !!!

  • @tersmit Dankie man. Kan jou sê daar is baie ure in daai Landy in.

  • nice !!!! nice !!!!

  • SUPRA engine on a truck!!!

  • @1johnpritchard If you are going to use all the original parts and if you are not going overboard maybe like I did and if the funds are available you can do it in a few months. All depends how far you want to go. If you need info later just give me a shout. Cheers bud and all the best with your upcoming project.

  • @1johnpritchard Hi John. Thanks for the compliment. At the time when I was rebuilding the Landy I still lived in South Africa. No we are in Sydney. I stoped counting at R85 000. Took me about 2 years to build but it was mostly weekends and some evenings during the week. Most of the time was taken up by getting the best fit for everything in there. I did not really keep track of all the hours. Hope this helps. Best regards, Ben

  • wat brand springs did u use mate

  • @Mr204ruger Hi there. I used the springs from Britpart in the UK.

  • do up that vw bug

  • @kc28 No, that was somebody else's project. Still not running yet I think...

  • so basically just the chassis and part of the rear tub is original. Why not save time and money and just buy a new defender or hi lux or do you just enjoy doing mechanical stuff like this and would you do it again

  • @bobatporty Yes that's basically it. Would I do it again?.....Maybe not. Just like doing stuff like that. It started off as just a rebuilt of the original and then I wanted to change this then that and at the end of the project, well almost left nothing original anymore.

  • @mnzgp I know what you mean, i used to be just the same I'm in my 50s now and with no family and no kids to get involved it's just not the same. I had a Dolomite sprint that just needed the wheels cleaned up and it ended up stripped too the shell and 5 years to rebuild. I never built up the nerve to work out how much I spent on it including my time, but it was good at the time and the boys learn a fair bit in the process. good luck on the next project, LOL

  • great looking build i am just at the starting point with mine look under chev landrover its the one with the gauges in the picture, what did you use for the power steering, cheers chris

  • @hollypolydog Hi Chris. Thanks. I used Toyota Twincam 16V engine (4a-GE ) power steering pump and for the steering box used the BMW's box. Had to manufacture brackets for it to fit. Anything else please ask. Best regards, Ben

  • Is it only rear wheel drive? because i don't see a centerbox?

  • @alfonzorugby Hi, yes still 4x4. Used the Toyota Hilux transfer gearbox. 3.34 min. into video you can actually see a part of it. Thanks for watching.

  • Stunning!

  • wow you've done a beautiful job! are you sure it's a 2a because when you've finished it all it looks identical to a defender 90 :/ amazing anyway :)

  • @SuperRudy94 Thanks man, yes originally it was a series 2A with the headlights fitted to the centre grill.

  • @mnzgp I see she looks stunning! they've always been my favourite :)

  • Damn it turned out sweet huh.. really cool build, and with that engine it must be pretty fast.. paint the hard top too, and you got a sweet ride for a life time.

  • Thanks for the video post of the Land Rover. I just bought a series II A, 1969, Single cab which has a 4DR5 Mitsubishi engine. You inspired me to repair mine in a better way than I first thought. Will post the re birth of my Land Rover, once its done. Thanks Very Much.

  • Thanks for the comment. I'm glad that this video inspired you to rebuild yours. Lots of work ahead depending the condition of the Landy. Please keep in touch and enjoy the project. Cheers!

  • You can make the rear ones work, it's just some cutting on the tub.

  • @keepitwildtv from spain, VERY VERY GOD.

  • Interesting project. There's a rod you can but to weld the sill piece to the back tub with a low temp torch...it would look much better than having the seam there. As you need to paint the hard-top anyway, do that and move the tail lights to the bottom. Oh, and get some rubber wheel arches and paint those too.

  • Hi, thanks for the comment. Front wheel arches I could get hold of but it was a mission finding arches for the tub because that is still the series 2a tub. Not the same as the newer defender. Still looking for some universal arches. Cheers
