  • Brilliant live, i saw them twice. Marriott was incredible, best white soul singer coming out of England at the time, bar none.Him and Pete were great together. I saw somewhere that Frampton was trying to reunite them when Steve died. Too bad.

  • Still one of my favorite bands!!

  • excellent, never seen

  • The Yin & Yang of life making amazing music: Peter Frampton/ Steve Marriottt. Paul McCartney/John Lennon

  • Thanks for the post!

  • Steve Marriott was so great, that when he left The Faces, it took BOTH Rod Stewart AND Ron Wood to replace him.

  • Every musician in this band was amazing. Every riff - every lick in this song is so gutsy. They feel it. I feel it.

Hey Coldplay: grow some balls- this is called Rock 'n' Roll.

  • @Alpha7xxx Yes balls is definitely required and is sadly and noticeably

missing. Now they sound like boys, back then it was seriously manly.

    Hee..Hee..

  • Can a white man sing more soulfully than any black singer?

    Listen to Steve Marriott.

    There's your answer.

  • @mrsolofeo

I do agree with your comment.

No, there's no white frontman ever who could perform like him. RIP Steve.

    Cordialement.

  • @mrsolofeo well... i wouldnt say more. but he's def. amazing. more than "any" black man is just wrong. i wouldnt want to be the judge of that.

  • I am sooo happy that this stuff is available here..... I really miss these perfomances.

  • Steve shone so brightly, but was self-destructive, and people thought he would burn out at a young age. How sad that it was literal. This guy was a GIANT, in my opinion.

  • I was there at "Rockin' The Fillmore" May 28, 1971. The opened for Lee Michaels and blew the doors off the place.

  • @tjcpt1 me too, friday nite 2nd show. all 4 shows were recorded for Rockn the Fillmore. one of the best concerts i was ever at. the band was never the same after Frampton left.

  • These cats look like Joe Cocker's Grease Band, with a "Mitch Mitchell"-looking drummer!

  • @notfragile33 Drummer's name was Jerry Shirley.. this song is a cover of Dr. John's great tune!

  • yeah stevie had the voice

  • This is the good stuff.

  • Off topic, but an obscure group named Fear Itself also recorded "In My Time of Dying" on a self-titled album released in 1969.

  • GAWDdamn....: ) The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, all would have been smoked to dust by Steve. Believe that.

  • word is that Kieth wanted Steve to join the stones after Mick Taylor left......I think if he did? Jagger would have been in the unemployment line....This guy was nothing but Raw Talent.....Frontman, Guitar Slinger, and probably the most powerfull vocalist in the buisness......No wonder Mick didn't want em in the band......

  • noticing the comments on lyrics, everyone should check out the Dr John original

  • What a great sound, these guys were far better than any of the other bands that had more success, Aka Led Zeppelin!

  • This is the Soundtrack of my father (born 1944) wow you had the best Music ever to grace this planet. But we born (74 and later) had Grunge and captured the same Feeling.

    What Power.

  • @opiumrebel Nope.

  • @Khultan

Grunge had the same spark, love, feeling for music. It can't outshine Humble Pie and so on but it shared the same love for music. I'd love to live the footsteps of my father, but I can't. But we were not as good as this, but admit it, Grunge is the best homage to those people.

  • @opiumrebel Let's just agree to disagree.

  • @Khultan

The answer is to short, you didn't read my lips "..you had the best music ever to grace this planet."

  • brilliant !!

  • Has anyone pointed out that the lyrics in a part of this song are the same on led Zeppelin in my time of dying?

  • @mockinator15 In my time of dying is an old blues song from way back, Bob Dylan made it famous in the early 60s.

  • Unforgettable HUMBLE PIE !!!

  • 20 years ago,one of the days i cannot forget.R.I.P. Steve , may your music live in us for as long as we exist.

  • This guy was absolutely phenomenal! Tomorrow will be 20 years that he's been gone. What a shame.

  • I wonder what kind of harmonica he is playing

  • Yes.

  • I've always wished I could be as downright cool as Steve Marriott, but then I ask myself the question: Would I still be alive? The man was almost too cool to be true. Anyway, thanks for this video; it makes a good counterpoint to the version on Rockin' The Fillmore. It's always good to explore the roots of a masterpiece.

  • back seat Pete

  • Ain't a racist, love black people, but since the late 60's, white man can jump way, way, way higher.

  • @opiumrebel not true.Just in a different direction, Think Levi Stubbs jumping right and Steve Marriott jumping left

  • @knotty1701

Black people still cut it, agreed, but come on this takes of 4 caucasians jerkin' off get's me higher than any song performed by B.B King

  • Steve blows Plant away any day on vocals. Best blues-rock vocalist bar none!

  • I was there

  • He had more soul in his voice better than Paul Rodgers and Rod Stewart.

  • finally, an alternate faster version than performance! thanks!

  • Thank you sir for this upload! Excellent piece of history!

  • I have never gotten the appeal of this song. There's nothing else like it, but that is why I don't really like it. Dr John is hack

  • Wow!!!

  • marriot is class. most underestimated guy in the whole world of rockbands. i still think to this day he had more innovation than rodgers. but i think humble pie would have been the bigger band if they had got the break with a so called alright now number. both singers are brilliant. not heard of any new ones coming up at the minute. lemmy ,maybe..

  • Stevie M was bigger than both Paul Rodgers and Rod Stewart in the sixties. The last

two named mentioned did not rise into the public psyche until the 70's. Whether it was Stevie himself that couldn't sustain the momentum to super stardom or whether it was that his talent was just taken for granted by the public and music press. This I couldn't say, I like to think it was the latter case.

Growing up as a mod, Stevie will always be special to me.

  • OMG I am so totally embarrassed to admit this. I had no idea this was 'their' song. For years now I have been digging the Paul Weller version. No I understand why I love Paul Weller, he's influenced by the Pie. I've often heard Frampton sounds in Weller's stuff. Well, well, well. How jigsaw pieces fall from the sky into place. Stevie R.I.P. FRAMPTON live long, play long and prosper.

  • @ShadyPastel its actually a doctor john song

  • @ShadyPastel

If you love this you've got to get the original by Dr John!

  • @CCPbass Really? I had no idea he did it originally, thanks for filling me in. Cheers.

  • @ShadyPastel

    humble pie`s version is great.

dr. john`s version on "gris gris" is, however, the real deal...he wrote it, he owns it. I seriously suggest checking it out.

  • Absolutely sexy. Steve Marriott's the real deal baby. No one can touch him.

  • Haven't heard this for years - might just still have the vinyl in the loft. Must have a look!

  • If half of what is posted is true re: Jimmy Page having approached the late ,greatly missed Steve Marriot & the great ,still kick'n Terry Reid when forming Led Zeppelin - why did he settle for Miss Plant ?

  • Wonderful! Thank you David! :D

  • Found the Fillmore livein the 80's by accident. Did not know much of the band. One of the best live albums ever.

  • Humble Pie is best when played live. And Steve will always remain the best blues rock voice in history. R.I.P., Steve...and Greg, too.

  • he should have been bigger than Paul or rod but luck the breaks etc come into play.that voicee that talent ,stil other two vocalists have ther moments.paul still rocking it out.

  • This is absolutely fan-f******-tastic! The greatest british soul singer ever!

  • Love it!!

  • Excellent!!!!

  • Humble Pie live I wore out the vinyl. Humble Pie, Humble Pie the 8 track also broke.

  • Wow! What a incredible performance. No-one can hold a candle to Steve Marriott.

  • nice

  • better cut those stings hanging before you poke your eye. I guess if he still has his vision, it will be ok that was 1969.

  • need we say more?

  • Good but the fillmore version is far way better.

  • Simply the best!

  • Please, please, please keep this stuff coming.

    It's long overdue !!

Humble Pie. The beginning and the end.

    Rock on!

  • Simply one of the greatest rockers to ever live, miss ya Steve shame people today have no Idea what a Pie concert was like when Steve was on,

  • Listen to those beautiful twin leads. Amazing. I love Frampton's jazzy approach coupled with Marriot's slash and burn blues. I feel like this incarnation of Humble Pie was like the British Allman Bros.

I bought this album from a record show in Atlanta when I was 18. I think it was about $3. Then I got it on CD. Now I have the MP3. Rock like this is timeless. I feel sorry for those people that haven't experienced Rockin' The Fillmore.

    Wham bam look out Sam.

  • oooh yeahh~!

  • Much as I like the Dr. John version and Humble's Rockin' the Fillmore cut, Stevie OWNS this song on this clip!

    He's freakin' spooky here!

  • Pound for pound, the rockingest band to ever come out of Britain-- besides The Beatles, of course...

  • @tinglywoowoo And Zeppelin and Floyd and Hendrix and DP and Queen, dont forget them xD.

  • @ilovepinkfloydyay Hendrix is a Yank, though embraced tighter by the Brits during his lifetime.

  • @tinglywoowoo I thought he was a Brit, he spoke with a British accent, recorded in London and lived there for a time. Perhaps I'm wrong, I'm not old enough to remember it.

  • Coolest harp solo ever.

  • This is such a treat. Marriott was the man, but I love Frampton's delicacy here too!

  • Such a shame we don't get to see this line up from later USA tours. They could get an audience near riot then hushed up again. Still miss Marriot so much, glad to see this at least. Maybe more lost footage out there I hope...

  • Widespread Panic still covers this from time to time and they do it justice too .

  • Awesome. I saw Marriot with the Small Faces several times in the 60s. Go back and listen to some of their stuff - one of the best live British bands of all time.

  • This is awesome! It's amazing how the jam progressed from what you hear here to what you hear on Rockin' the Fillmore.

    Fucking brilliant.

  • Cher does a kick ass version of this song. :)

  • I saw Marriott live several times with Humble Pie with & without the B/berries in Birmingham, UK and also in smaller venues with Packet of 3, appearing as surprise guest with friends in pubs such as The Rose & Crown in Bishops Stortford and he never failed to impress because he was the best live performer I 've ever seen. The most underrated musician in rock music. Rip irmao

  • Forget all else, Paul Weller just wanted to be Steve Marriot

  • @inshreds66 im always hearing people say weller models himself on marriot, but surely this is a good thing

  • @2bsom1 yep it is you are right.

  • Yes I would agree with that jrockon. The old Fleetwood Mac would be close, but they are more blues than hard rock blues. Anyway this is the best version of "splinters" I've heard other than a version by a guy named Johnny Jenkins...cause Duane Allman played on that!

  • Hey, had to remark as to the connection between Marriott (Pie) and Green (Mac) would like to throw in Davies and townsend and Moonie. Hyper tension

  • This band to me, is the best British hard rock blues band ever. Marriot, Shirley, Ridley, Frampton Version.

  • Thanks........ Where do find this stuff??? Humble Pie was and still is the best band i ever saw.... Early seventies were the best, but so hard to find good video. Thanks again/ keep 'em comin'

  • I saw Steve way back in the fall 1983 at the Bayou in DC...

one of the best Bar shows I ever seen...

  • Wow, Wow, Wow- used to see bands at the Bayou all the time - love Steve Marriott-

one of my Heros- wish I could of been there- never knew he played there- Still

wonder what he and Frampton would have come up with had Steve not passed-

R.I.P. Steve Marriott (you know thry were writing songs together just before he died)..

  • Who's the man? Steve Marriott!

  • Frampton still using the Gretsch, Marriott already switched to the Dwight.. Thanks, I've never seen this footage before.

  • this is the song they merged into the breakdown in Shakey Jake when they played it live isnt it :) ace stuff!! xxxx

  • man you can see teh black crowes influence in this

  • you do mean you can see humble pie's influence on the crows, right?

  • Stevie was THE man,it didmt matter who else he was playing with,he made any band he played with sound amazing.

  • Jimmy Page actually asked Steve Marriot to join the "New Yardbirds" (aka LedZeppelin ;-)

    before he did Robert Plant!....

Now, I don't dare to imagine what Led Zeppelin would have sounded like if Steve had accepted!.. ;-)

Thanks for a great upload, xJay!!!

  • yes I could not have said it any better.... :)

  • @JimMcCartyandCo : He also asked Terry Reid and apparently was asked by Reid's management if he wanted to play guitar with broken fingers...No wonder Peter Grant became Zep's manager. Those golden days of rock management ;-)

  • Comment removed

  • @JimMcCartyandCo I am huge Zeppelin fan.

but when I saw Marriott for the first time I thought it.

    Marriott could perform ZEP alone.

Robert Plant + Jimmy Page = Steve Marriott!!

    in My opinion.

  • @SNOWCHILD1011 in some way I got your point, man, he was a total package of rockn'roll.

  • @gotzou Thank you for being so understanding.

Absolutely he was perfect Rock'n Roller!!!!

  • @JimMcCartyandCo

Actually, Plant was hired after being recommended by Terry Reid, who turned down the job thinking he was about to go big on his own. What an improvement that would've been.

  • @JimMcCartyandCo

The New Yardbirds would have been amazing,

I wonder what Led Zeppelin would have sounded like if Steve had have joined them.

Yeah X Jay love this footage brother....

I'd give one of my kidneys to play bass or guitar in a band like the Yardbirds or Humble pie etc etc, Infact I'd love to do a nice raw blues thing, Yardbirds, stones etc...... anyone feel free to give me a shout :)

They don't make music like this anymore, I was born way too late (1973)

  • @JimMcCartyandCo

thank god steve didn`t join led zeppelin - two reasons:

    1) we wouldnt have had huble pie

    2) steve marriott was the real deal, e.g. not pretentious enough for led zeppelin

much as I enjoy some led zep, their canonization nowadays goes way beyond the talent they really displayed at the time...

  • Doob it up and pass it!!! This is what its all about !

  • This really has to be a great classic ..surely..any how def a great upload and more than worthy of 5*

  • LOVE THIS !!!!!!!!!!!! thanks so much for posting this show !

  • With all his other talents, I forgot what a great harpist he was, unique and soulful and full.

  • wonderful!!! thanks for posting this

  • simply great, greetings from swiss, saw them with clem clempson in 197o in frankfurt - velvet underground as (before( group) instead of nikki hopkins........greetings to all, pete

  • Taken from an interview with Peter Frampton (Modern Guitars Magazine - 28.11.2008) -part 1

'...The other day I was at a gig and this guy came backstage and he showed me pictures hed taken of me the last time I was there. I cant remember where it was now. And he said, This is for you, and it was an envelope of, like, an 11x15 photo.I opened it up and I got chills, man. It was Steve, at the mike, with the Epiphone with the one P90,' tbc

  • (interview with Peter Frampton - part 2)

'...and it was just hanging, he was on the mike, long hair, and he was playing harp with his eyes closed. Thats going up next to the Beatles downstairs for me. Thats how much I respect him to this day and always will. I will never have the opportunity to play with that talent again or anyone that comes close. '

    tbc

  • (interview with Peter Frampton - part 3)

'...Maybe Im wrong. I hope so. Thats a better way of putting it. I hope that I get the chance to work with someone again who has the amount of talent that that little five foot guy had. I mean, he was the greatest, right? He was better than Paul Rodgers and he was better than Rod Stewart. He wouldve been bigger than either of them.'

  • Fuck me - the stagecraft - unequalled.

  • couldn't have said it better myself

  • My preferred version of this song is on the Live at the Whiskey A Go-Go '69 album.

I would like to see video footage of that performance but I think your right that it may not exist.

  • Where is the full 20+ minute version of this?

  • It's on the 'Rockin' The Fillmore' - live album.

However I don't think there is another live footage where they're performing this song.

Also they never did a studio version of this song.

  • the GREATEST Brit. Rocker ever !!!!!!!!!

  • Good old R&B

  • Yep man :)

This performance is all about the feeling and the flow. IMO great stuff. And on vocal the blackest white cat Britain ever produced.
