I saw them in concert a couple of years after this album came out. The way they did the sound board, Buddy Cage's pedal steel guitar really dominates. Could barely hear the other guitars. That's the way it usually works out when there is a pedal steel in a band.
I knew a guy from high school that attending a prestigious music school, and he said that he didn't care for pedal steel. I think it is the best, for country rock type songs.
Had their 1st album:NRPS' at 12...Amazin'line-up :apart from jerry, there was even Commander Cody(fr. the Lost planet airmen'!)..TRUE,TRUE,this song is /was 1 of my fav. 'soaring 'instrumentals...along w. 'Spare Chaynge'(J.Airplane),and -OF COURSE the 2 greatest N.Young/Crazy Horse classics 'Down by the River ,& 'Cowgirl in the sand'(fr.Everybody knows this is Nowhere)......They all make ya FLY ,in any case! Mango splash
I roadied for these guys in 1973. I had no idea that they were started so that Jerry Garcia had a band to play steel guitar with. They always sounded a little like the Dead to me. Great times, great people, great music. i hope that heaven is as much fun as working for this band was.....
Thank you for sharing this fantastic tune. And I totally agree with what you have said. No one makes music like this anymore. Those were the days, when the air smelt sweet. And music was made from the heart and not from a computer.
I know I''ll make enemies,but...I bought the first 4 NRPS LP's when they came out 1972-75?I loved the first album the best.Jerry Garcia's Steel pedal guitar was fantastic.Buddy Cage was a worthy replacement and if not for him NRPS were juvenile performers with a lead singer who sounds like a 14 year old brat.NRPS was only their cosmic style of pedal steel guitar which Jerry Garcia had going on the first Jefferson Starship album.Listen & you'll hear it.
Awesome cut man - thank you for this from the center of my psychedelic heart. It sounds like so much other good stuff . . . Dead, Quicksilver, Spirit, Bubble Puppy, Tull!, etc. Groovy beyond all grooviness. I just heard this song for the first time since maybe a sunny Sunday afternoon in Denver in 1974. My friends parents brought back a 3' tall china waterpipe from their missionary days in Madagascar in the late '50s. We made good use of it. Peace and Light everlasting friends.
I saw these guys in 1973 in the UK at the Bickershaw pop festival (North West England), thought they stole the show alongside Country Joe Macdonald. Great stuff !!!
When Gyspsy Cowboy came out and I heard Death and Destruction it elavated NRPS to a different Status! That'a when they became real Cosmic Cowboys - Buddy Cage just tore it up and put them into more of the Grateful Dead relm. John - David - Buddy thanks for the memories!
It's hard to say what's my favorite NRPS song! But I can say when Gypsy Cowboy came out and I heard Death and Destruction I was totally blown away! Buddy Cage just tore it up! That's when NRPS enter the Grateful Dead relm of being able to play space as well as traditional. They had established themselves within the Deadhead world as a must see! Thanks for posting and thanks John - David and Buddy for the memories!
Fantastic! This has always been my favorite New Rider's tune. I have the vinyl record in storage. loved it since I first heard it in 1971 or 72, when I was 13 or 14. Awesome pedal steel solos.... Nobody makes music like this anymore.
@Smudgefizz Thanks for listening. My brother who is 10 years older than me and a Vietnam Vet bought this record when it was new and gave it to me, I kept it in storage more than 30 years at my mom's house until she sold the house and moved in with my sister. The record is mint haha. This is the greatest Steel Guitar solo I ever heard. What a great band.
@wnorcott I agree, this is the best steel guitar solo ever. I bought the album when I was in high school around '76 or '77. Thought it was the best then but my friends never saw it. I always tend to enjoy the less popular tunes anway. Guess I'm just wired that way!
Saw The New Riders many times in the early to mid 70's. They were awesome with Buddy Cage, John "Marma Duke" , Nelson and the rest. Many time the stage was set up with wagon wheels, cactus....awesome memories.
A lot of psychedelia was pretty silly but this was a landmark track on a great album that I really really regret selling about 20 years ago. I suppose it had to go - I had kids by then and even listening now this track makes me want to smoke something and these days I don't smoke anything!! Thankfully, remembering being stoned is cheaper then getting stoned and almost as nice. I think I'll be buying the CD. Can anyone post "Gypsy Cowboy" and "Long Black Veil". Shit, this was a great album!!
Sounds like Donovan's "Season Of The Witch" which, IMO, was Donovan's best song. I'm waiting for someone (wnorcott?) to post "Gypsy Cowboy". BTW Buddy Cage is an (unsung) Utter Fuckin' Genius!
Thanks! I am glad you enjoy it as much as I do. I am not sure if the last word in 7:39 is "Nadine" (a woman's name) or "maybe" but honest to gosh I think he is singing Nadine.
@Poordumbcracker Kickass tune......brings back memorys when I was just a young kid and my older brother would be playin NRPS and when he was really heavy into smokin pot etc.........same kinda feelin as with the Dead....I dont care to much for the Dead but I do like a lot of stuff these guys did. The memorys are all comin back....
i really like it. but it surely isn´t the most psychedelic song ever. bands like the CAN and YES or ravi shankar or pink floyd are far more psychedelic in my opinion. :)
When you were living down in Warsaw, do you remember how they loved the law.

I wish they played this stuff on the radio. Instead we have to hear Freebird and Hotel California again for the millionth time.

@nholt The five millionth time, radio has lacked any discernible balls whatsoever for about three decades now.
