I was lucky enough to see Harry live in Southport in 1980, when I was 5 years old. What great parents I had for taking me!
This is my favourite Harry song, and I can't listen to it without crying. He was an amzing songwriter, an amazing human being in general. If there more like him, then I wonder what would happen to this world?
harry chapin is not dead. i know this sounds gay but his strong will and pure heart reaches people though his music. and as long as there is people out there with the same will that will carry on that will. he will live forever. goodbye and thank you for saving my life.
Thanks, I love this song...I had the honor of seeing and meeting Harry Chapin, I miss him and his music. I can't tell you how many time I sat in my room listening to this song as a teenager, thanks for sharing
Ever since I was a child my dad told me this was my song and it wasnt till i got older i realize it fit me perfectly. Now my dad has gone I find it very hard to listen to but I'll still play it on my wedding day just for us
Both. It's relentless in its emotional truth. My dad loves Chapin but their group hopelessness hurts. It's so personal, I suppose. There's a certain godlessness which I think disturbs me, in both men. My dad raised me on Chapin, so it's so intermingled. I don't think I would like it if he played it at my wedding, for different reasons. My dad is a very lonely person in some ways, so the words would lack a certain confidence. Nevertheless, Chapin is an extremely gifted, deep storyteller.
My granddaughter is 10 and I am compiling photos and video clips so that on her 16th birthday I can put it to this song.......Harry lives on! He is the only artist that sounded better live than studio! I saw him 4 times in Michigan and he never failed to sell-out the theater.
My daughter is leaving for college in the fall. This song captures my feelings exactly. Amazing blend of words, music and performance. I found the best live rendition of this song on his best album, "Legends of the Lost and Found" the record has yet to bereleased on CD. Thanks!
Over 6000 views and only 9 comments, worthy of much more. How does anyone learn to write such beautiful poetic lyrics and then compose the melodies to accompany them? Harry Chapin was surely a musical genius, so sad he died so young, there must have been so much more to come. Wish we could turn the clocks back and save his life. I might be wrong, but there doesn't appear to be even one negative comment on any of Harry's videos on youtube, evryone loved him, such a nice, genuine man.
After looking at all these videos, I feel that Harry may have been 100% exhausted. Look at him. He looks so tired. Did that contribute to his death? I miss him so much. I am so thankful to you tube and would gratefully pay money for dvds of his concerts. I got to see him live on the verities and balderdash tour. I am so happy for that.
Yes, I wish we could have saved Harry too. **still tears**.
I danced with my dad @ my wedding to this song instead of the standard daddy's little girl. Not a dry eye in the house folks and about 100 requests to have it played @ their weddings with their dads/daughters.
Heads up... There's also a full studio version on user channel MrOldTunes... "Tangled Up Puppet Harry Chapin" =)

m a part of this group LUNCH who does a lot of Harry Chapin tributes. We actually did one last Saturday!
His band is so amazing, like him. I actually got to perform with them. :)
I wish I had been around to see him in concert before he passed. :(
