SuperGrafx = More faithful to the original than the MD / GEN port, but with the quietest and weakest sound and music compared to both, but still sounds as enjoyable as the Arcade version's sound.
MD / GEN = Arranged, but a little too noisy. I played this port during free time in elementary school, which belonged to the teachers. Despite this, I find the other versions as equally interesting (probably slightly more interesting than) as the MD / GEN port.
While the Genesis versions sound more arcade-like (since both the Genesis and the arcade have FM sound chips, resulting in similar instrument/waveform sounds), the Supergrafx is much more faithful to the arcade in terms of how its tunes are arranged.
Cool up thx! It's interesting I actually think the SGX suits the material best overall, though a couple arcade trax are unbeatable; and also for a couple of the MD ones the bass response edges it - though it's weak compared to MD's later great music anyway. I am actually partial to Tim Follin's re-imagining for the Amiga music, but it's not even a real Amiga game, it's just a worthless port from the Atari ST. Which was as crap and lazy as it gets in the first place, like all US Gold shovelware.
SEGA MD version is very impressive and easily takes the second place! The Arcade version of course is superior from all three and is the winner! And last but not least is the PCE version.
I always enjoyed the Genesis music for this and can also appreciate the SGX version as well. I think I lean towards the Gen version just because that's what I grew up with. If I had spent the money on importing an SGX than that would obviously be the best imo. :P
I spent my money on a Neo-Geo AES instead. The only bad thing about having a Neo-Geo, aside from spending all of my money, was that it made the Genesis, SNES, and TG16 look dated.
I like how the SEGA version has that one instrument that sounds better and stronger than even the arcade, but then has several instruments that muffle the rest of the song. The Arcade has clarity but somehow hollow and simple (Perhaps for the best?). The SGX version that video game sound that is so charming of the Turbo 16:) Like That Doing Doing sound in the Level 1 song HAHA! Love it. The SEGA version has that strong beat tap and sound fuller with improved clarinet, the organ is weak though.
After listening to the first 5 minutes, it sounds to me like the main differences are that the arcade sounds dated and almost primitive, the SG using deeper, higher quality tones and the Megadrive using low quality sounds but, playing them slower and with a little more clarity.
I really can't say that one is any better than the other as all three show their strengths and weaknesses through their performance.
Hopefully this demonstration will help put an end to the debate.
I like the arcade versions much much better. I have one compliant though. What happened to the stage 4 music? That's my fav stage music that takes place in the cave of crystals, spikes, and ice.
The Genesis may have used a larger variety of sounds, but the sounds themselves sounded scratchy and obnoxious. If you listen to the arcade, there is much more quality to every note; a warmer tone, and some vibrato. You don't get vibrato on the Genesis version, instead, everything is stale.
huh, the MD actually does fairly well in this comparison even though the game only uses FM. No psg or sampled drums. There must be a few years between the versions as well.
@JasonLee333 Old post, but in this demonstration - specs mean nothing and listening means everything. PSG isn't used on the MD version and the SuperGrafx/TG16/PCE has 6 WSG (wave sample generation) - not PSG. SGX/TG16/PCE use custom waveforms to do additive synthesis which normal PSG fails at.
I think people think the MD virsion is better because it was been playing louder then the others, I think the arcade virsion is better, But I think if the other where played a little louder, These would get god votes as well, Ive only played the MD virsion aswelll...
The arcade version has the best sound. The MD version has the 'worst' sound. I say worst because it's not very much like the arcade. Since the one thing I am looking for in an aracde conversion is authenticity the MD version obviously fails big time in both graphics and audio.
In my opinion, the Mega Drive version had the best tunes, but this just might be since it's the only version I own and have played. The arcade version has quite great as well, and the SuperGrafx also has great tracks.
If you where to ask me, the Megadrive Music has a far more Sinister Sound to it then the other two... In fact, i'd go as far as to say the Arcade and SG are almost Borderline Happy to me... That's just opinion, though, and their still great to listen to as much as the MD's.
What about the ones for the SEGA Master System (SMS), the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), the Commodore 64, the Commodore Amiga and the Game Boy Color (GBC)?
The Ghosts 'n Goblins was ported to Sinclair ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC 464/6128, Atari ST, IBM PC, Commodore 16, Sharp X68000, Nintendo Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Commodore 64, Commodore Amiga and the NES. Ghouls 'n Ghosts was ported to SMS, Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, SuperGrafx, Sharp X68000, Sega Saturn, Playstation, Xbox, PS2, PSP and Wii has the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive version on VC. Just thought I'd share this with you folks.
Ghosts 'N Goblins is also present in the Sega Saturn, PlayStation, PS2, Xbox and PSP compilations that featured Ghouls 'N Ghosts, being Capcom Generation in the first two systems and Capcom Classics Collection in the latter three. Even Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts is included in all of them.
The arcade version is better. The MD version sux. And the SG version... well... it was released 2 years after the MD version... enough time to fix the crappy MD bips...
if only the SuperGrafx had a better audio/sound chip, instead of having the same one in the PC Engine / TurboGrafx. that was the worst thing about the SuperGrafx.
Well the great thing about today's computers is that they're so advanced they can emulate all these old computers without even sweating. Not that the programmers ever imitate the old hardware perfectly, but..
the CPS arcade version is unquestionably TECHNICALLY the best.
I personally PREFER / LIKE / ENJOY the Genesis music the most, even though it's technically inferior to the arcade.
the Super Grafx music is shit because the audio chip is the same as in the original PC-Engine/TurboGrafx, and therefore worse than the Arcade and Genesis.
I would say this: the PC Engine SuperGrafx sound is made to sound more like the arcade than the MegaDrive/Genesis. However, because of the weaker sound technology in SG (fewer channels, no FM Synth) the MD/Genesis music sounds better, even though it's more of a departure from the arcade. fair enough?
AND, although the arcade sound is technically superior to the Genesis, I happen to like the Genesis music better.
@superpcenginegrafx@superpcenginegrafx By your name alone i understand why you would seemed biased and saying the pc engine is better, but it clearly is not. Don't get me wrong i like the pc engine/super grafx, but the music sound like extremely good 8-bit audio. GnG is one of my favorite games and a lot of times the first thing i compare when playing a game is the sound. SG has the MD beat in graphics but the audio wise the SG is not as close to arcade as MD.
@superpcenginegrafx Not really. The Genesis/MD has much closer music to the arcade. That's because it used a sound setup similar to most old school arcade machines of that era (a Yamaha sound chip and a Z80).
The PC Engine and even the Super Grafx has a much weaker sound chip than the Genesis/MD. It's basically like a nice 8 bit chip that uses PSG. Genesis music wins easily.
The genesis was quite a nice machine for it's time. It was basically a late 1980's arcade machine in a box. The Super Grafx was a weaker machine, still the same, much slower 8-bit processor of the PC Engine. The only reason Super Grafx ports were better is because the games were nearly double the size of the genesis game (hence why they cost upwards of 100$ back then), and the system had much more Ram than the Genesis. Even super grafx was technically inferior to genesis despite the ram.
@Parryall2 what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
@superpcenginegrafx Nope.Inferior sound chip with same twangy music in all the games.Capcom did a great job with this and SF2CE none the less but Gen/MD still wins in both games IMHO
Good morning, afternoon, and evening, ladies and gentlemen! Your offical spokeswoman here for another EXTREME BATTLE! This time, the game is Ghouls 'N Ghosts from CAPCOM! Did you know that my boss got mad at AirRaidX because he said the Arcade version is perfection? This match may prove or disprove that theory! The three contenders this time around are the before-mentioned Arcade version, the Mega Drive, and the Super Grafx...SUPER GRAFX?! WHAT IS THAT?! Anyhow, LET THE BRUTALITY BEGIN!
I have to say this: Ghouls 'N Ghosts does not have the best music I've ever heard, but it still is quite rememberable. It goes back and forth at the start, but all three systems duke it out at their HARDEST! The Arcade version's got quality. I can tell you that. BUT IT GOT KILLED, BABY! Listen to the Super Grafx! It had the worst start of the three, but WOW. It's got the quality AND appeal! Pretty amazing for a...PC Engine counterpart I don't know about.
The Mega Drive does have its typical sound again, but it has a distorted mess. It's the worst. IT'S GONE TO THE DEPTHS OF HELL WITH LUCIFER (Lepia, if I remember properly in its version of the game)! That ends the match with the mysterious fighter being the CHAMPION! That means, once again, the Arcade version is NOT...PERFECT! Have fun, and remember: we all need to eat a little broccoli every now and then. Until next time!! Rankings: 1. Super Grafx 2. Arcade 3. Mega Drive.
MD version runs slower as its PAL , the Genesis version is Scart so should run faster.

Arcade = Original. True voice of Capcom.
SuperGrafx = More faithful to the original than the MD / GEN port, but with the quietest and weakest sound and music compared to both, but still sounds as enjoyable as the Arcade version's sound.

Arcade = The sound of Capcom when it was still young. Twinkling orchestra style.
SuperGrafx = Close to the arcade's, minus a few instruments + featuring the buzzing voice of the SuperGrafx.
MD/GEN = More instruments than the other two. The instruments also sound superior; however, the Stage 1 theme has a slower tempo.
