Musically better as in? Metallica is stylistically a lot more adventurous, more themes and ideas in a single song, better composing IMO. (Take a look at this song for example, it's built on only one riff and a chorus, and added to that a solo section, not that that's wrong though) That more adventurous approach got a bit in the wrong direction with their Load - St. Anger era though.
