He wanted to apply backspin to the ball to end up somewhere near the white circle. Bridging his cue with his hand as so to strike down on the ball and thus create backspin over that distance would be impossible. Hope this helps :)

The white was so close to the object ball, he had to cue at something of a downwards angle in order to prevent committing a push-shot. You don't need as much follow through when you're cueing down on the white to generate screw, so there was less chance of a push-shot.
