  • I'm a bit confused as to wether that is Jimmy sat with the cast or not. The guy is wearing a Pink shirt. In a documentary on the end of the Giant DVD Jane Withers mentions Jimmy had a Pink shirt he would never take off she had to prize from him to launder it. She then said he gave it to her to look after til he came back from the race, which sadly he never did.

  • Thank you so much for sharing!! its so nice to see the actors just hanging around between takes--and those are LONG takes--even for the stars--for all the lighting, camera prep. Film making is pretty boring--the smart actor has to keep up their energy level between takes--Dean was able to do this.

  • Loved going to the set though one needs a lot of imagination looking at some old boards. Was great meeting the Evans family too.

  • amazing photographs, they look brand new, its hard to believe they were taken 54 years ago

  • I remember seeing a behind the scenes video of the "East of Eden" from a fan which saw James Dean hugging someone after filming. I could not find the video I would be very helpful if anyone knows where I could see it.

    Ps: was in youtube

  • the rock must have been thinking god that james is one hot piece of ass.

  • Beautiful Jimmy Dean. It is amazing how great the quality of these photos are. it looks as if it was filmed yesterday.

  • great clip

  • there a lot of gay connection in this film, obviously Rock and George, but also Dean and Monty Clift by way of Liz Taylor. In the words of Seinfeld, not that theres anything wrong with that.

  • Giant, based on Edna Ferber's novel, starts out in Texas during the early 1920s. What opens as an ode to the Lone Star state quickly turns into a indictment of an overbearing, racist culture. Giant goes to great pains to illustrate the callous discrimination faced by women and Mexican-descended Texans

  • Giant, when Hollywood knew how to make a great motion picture.

  • Man it must have been hot down there in the Lone Star state when they made this flick....seems to be very few trees & not much shade at the Benedict's"ranch"! That scene where the new Mrs Benedict faints at seeing the cooked calf's head is in the Edna Ferber novel too! THANKS for posting these fascinating on-location candid shots! :)

  • The part at :42 where you say its James Dean, it actually isn't. It's Bob Hinkle, the dialogue coach. Jimmy and Rock did despise each other.

  • @jenjenten how do you know they despised eachother?

  • @bluefev3r just from what I've read in several Dean biographies. Apparently Jimmy thought Rock was a "phony" and Rock thought Jimmy was rude. Maybe despised isn't the right word, but they most definitely didn't get along.

  • @jenjenten ok so don't spread the word that they hated eachother. they were both legends and lets leave it at that

  • thanks for these pics----great

  • GOOD JOB! GREAT SHOTS! I WOULD LOVE TO SEE MORE. KEEP EM COMING.

  • I love this, however that is not James Dean at the minute mark of this video. It's Bob Hinkle, Rock Hudson and James Deans dialogue coach for the movie. Jimmy is only at the end in the movie stills of the BBQ.

  • The film was shot in 1955 and was released in 1956.

But in the airport scene, James Dean is mounted on a 1955 Lincoln, and Carroll Baker in a 1956 Lincoln.

    How is this possible?

Remember that Jimmy died in 1955.

  • Easy question..... as the new cars get out in september / october.

  • Many have tried to emulate him, but there is only ONE James Dean!

  • @gracefulangels of course, he is unique...also when someone tries to imitate another, will lost the own beauty.

Jimmy never imitated anyone, he was always true to himself, so everybody loves him. He is so special people...it´s simple...

  • @albertomfs He is indeed. I think he is so breathtaking. Your tribute..."I see you" made my eyes well up.

  • @free2drm aww thank you..."I see you" was made by salomé, another huge fan from Jimmy. I love that video and i think Jimmy likes that there in my youtube channel... I am crazy for him, i do everything for him cause i just love Jimmy. He lives forever in my heart... :)

  • @gracefulangels Accidentally did a thumbs down when I meant to do a thumbs up. You are so right. There will NEVER be another like him-EVER.

  • @gracefulangels Actually if you stop fixating on James Dean & looked at the bigger picture. He emulated Monty Clift his whole career.

  • Great movie.

    Seen it in 57 , I was 15 y.o

My father bought me the soundtrack recording - a Capitol vinyl record which I still keep . One can never forget the opening scene with D.Tiomkin's great score.....

    Emanuel

  • I have found the ruins from the REATA Building on Google Earth :-)))))

And believe me, it was not easy to find!

  • Where did they film the scene with the airport?

  • The Barbecue scene is still done that way down in Mexico..and man! are they good!!!! Where's the red or green chile?

  • Liz wasn't bored....but had a horrible hangover that hot day >notice the many OJ's she had in front,to sober it down for work

  • Great pictures, but it cant be 1956, james dean died on 30 sept 1955.

  • it came out in 56, i think thats what it means

  • thnaks for sharing this with us!!

  • I cannot find a copy of the main theme of Giant anywhere. At least not on any thing but vinyl records. Such a beautiful score! I too am curious as to where "Benedict" Texas was shot. Thank you for sharing.

  • Giant was filmed in Marfa, Texas (it's in the Big Bend region). Somewhere betwen 2000-3000 people lived there during it's filming.

  • Wow does this bring back memories. I was there! At age 4 I played Jordan Benedict III. I was sitting on that front porch when James punched Rock. Actually it was quite traumatic for me to see my "movie daddy" get hit like that. By the way, I never really cried on the horse. Rock covered my face cause I was giggling. They had to do pick ups in Burbank by destroying all my toys off camera for a close up of me crying and dub the sound over the riding scenes. Same goes for the Thanksgiving scene.

  • Where the movie scenes been made? Especially the airport? I do not think it was in Texas.

  • I don't know. By then I had grown up to become Dennis Hopper. We took the train from Union Station (LA) to Marfa, TX. I was too young to remember much but that train must have been one helluva party! All those young stars in their mid 20s--WOW! I have a pic that my mother took of Dennis Hopper holding me on the platform. Liz took a pic of me in Rock"s lap and Rock took a pic of me in Liz's lap. Seems like those two got along fine. All indoor scenes were filmed at Warner Bros. in Burbank.

  • It was very much filmed in Texas. Giant was filmed in Marfa, Texas (it's in the Big Bend region). Somewhere betwen 2000-3000 people lived there during it's filming.

  • They did not dub your crying in the german version. you can hear an english "No!" instead of a german"Nein!". It always gives me goosebumps! Good to hear, that the scene was not that traumatic for you. Kind regards from germany!

  • yeah that is definately not James Dean at the minute mark and its wide know he detested Rock

The hair doesn't even look like Jimmy's

  • great score. In my opinion anyway.

  • in 99% of all the other photos of the making of Giant, Jimmy is rarely pictured with the rest of them is he.

  • Superb movie! #1 in my opinion. Good old days: James, Liz, Rock, Earl, Mineo, Hopper - and the Social changes showed by Edna's book. George Stevens also has brought in another classic: "Shane". In my opinion, next would come Coppola, Spíke Lee, Ridley

  • At 0:42 into your video post, that's not James Dean sitting with Taylor and Hudson. It's Earl Holliman wearing the white cowboy hat. Dean and Hudson detested one another.

  • Sorry but that is James Dean. Earl Holliman was in the later part of the film when the house was remodeled.

  • Nope. At one minute in, that's Holliman. I don't care when he shows up in the movie. That's him seated with Rock and with Liz.

  • I agree. James Dean's got much clearer hair. And he hated Rock, indeed.

  • @nedland20 George Stevens had a habit of having ALL the cast on the set whether they were shooting scenes or not. Movies are not shot in sequence, like some people think, so this very well could be Earl Holliman, The photo is too blurred to accurately say for sure.

  • @nedland20 .. it's really not jimmy ....

  • @nedland20

Nope, that is Earl Holliman. there are several other photos of him that will confirm

  • The location shoot out in Marfa was in the summer of 1955, NOT 1956. Giant came out in '56, but these photos are from '55.

  • @nedland20 Do a google image search for Earl Holliman and it is more likely that it is him, not Dean. He has kind of a flat profile with a prominent chin.

  • Did y'all ever consider that the man could be Dean's stunt double or stand in? The man IS in Dean's costume but he doesn't have Dean's profile.

  • @dickypot dean and hudson hated eachother?

  • Good job...I always like watching this movie.

  • Awesome research on your part!

  • Love this... but the words are not quite up there for long enough. Well done.

  • i liked the pix but there's NO WAY u can look at the photo & read the text both -before the next photo is up

  • One of the finest films, all together. This piece is put together nicely, thanks.

  • Rock Hudson's Best Leading Actor Oscar nomination for "Giant" wasn't enough, he should have won. Elizabeth Taylor also deserved an Academy Award for this film.

  • I fully agree. Thanks for watching and thanks for writing.

  • My pleasure speaking of people I like. Anytime.
