I remember "The Spiral Zone" when it was on WPIX-TV back in 1987. I've never seen that logo at the end of the show. The Atlantic/Kushner-Locke and the Maltese Companies logo are so cool. The only one missing afterwards was the Orbis Communications logo. That third logo at the end was cut off, it was replaced with a glimpse of an episode of "Thundercats".
Hang on a sec...A-KOM? No wonder why this animation style looked so familiar, it's the same company that was making Robocop animated series back in the 80's, my favorite one as a kid after TMNT.
Ok, this is the first time in about 20 years I get to see this awesome and kick ass cartoon again, but suddenly, it comes to my mind and I can't help it, to think this is propaganda against comunism or am I crazy?
These were the times when cartoons kicked ass! If only they'd revive the old cartoons and make a special channel for them........... thanx for uploading - you're a god!
I can't believe that they actually put a public service message about unplanned pregnancies, in a KIDS' show. They even used the phrase "Get the facts about avoiding unintended pregnancy, from America's family doctors and Obstiatricians, and Gynacologists...etc."
And this durring a show for kids so young, that the networks always made them use the phrase "destroy" instead of "kill".
(After the commercials, there's just the closing credits; no previews.)
i remember that psa now, i was too young to care or know what it was about. anyone watching cartoons wasn't interested in sex, and no girls were watching anyway. that's funny.
Previews? that shit didnt start till like 99 2000 and then only for primetime shows at first. i mean "scenes from our next episode"
I don't remember this one from when it was new but it definitely had some solid plot structure. I agree though that it was toned down for the younger set. A lot of potential though!
Did anyone notice in the end credits that Nelson Shin ( Transformers the Movie 1986) and Bruce Timm ( Batman/ Superman, Justice League) worked on this cartoon? That's kinda cool.
As far as Eighties Kids Shows goes, Spiral Zone had an interesting idea behind it. I could easily see this translated into a very interesting Adult TV series or Sci-Fi action movie.
I agree. The concept was way ahead of it's time, but they tried to turn it into a kids show. If it had come out in the 2ks, it would have done very well I think.
This cartoon is actually surprisingly quite dark for its time; but it's good.
My gut instinct tells me the same group that produced "The Centurions" produced this? Commander courage sounds like Max Ray, and the animation style looks similar.
Typically in American zombie movies, there is no cure for the zombie virus, and survivors are left with no choice but to kill those who have been infected. Also, traditional zombies would try to eat any survivors they find. But this is a clean cartoon so we can't expect any of that here. Besides this is still good at memory. If this was a Japanese anime show, it'd be an entirely different story.
Being a kids show, Spiral Zone puts a lighter tone to the zombie genre. Back then, this show gave me that same feeling of suspense and horror that comes from the standard zombie movie. But there are differences, the zombie virus exists only within the zone and the zombies can return to being human again after they've been removed from the zone.
At 0:43, you can see the scene that is used for the one part in the intro! The part where Max catches the zombie kid in his grip and then we get a close up! That scene used to creep me out as a child!
=) do you have spiral zone ep

You obviously didn't know many girls at the time.
I used to watch it all the time when I was a little girl.
And so did every other girl my age who I knew in the neighborhood. and most of my friends at school.
We also watched G.I. Joe, He-Man, Transformers, and just about every other "boy cartoon show" in addition to Jem, Snorks, She-Ra, Smurfs...etc.
