The recording of Gloria's Step on Sunday at the Village Vanguard is one of the most amazing pieces of music I have ever heard and Evans is brilliant with it.
I first got hip to Bill Evans when "Conversations With Myself" came out. Still have the album. He's been one of my favorites since. I read "How My Heart Sings" and this interview is another great nugget of info to have for this Bill Evans "Freak"
@mrfish4lyfe: I hadn't heard of Mr. Motian's death until I saw your note--thanks for informing us. I just went and read his obituary on The New York Times website. He was such a great innovator. I'm saddened that another great link to the illustrious history of Jazz has passed from the scene.
Billfreaks, you are invited to a beautiful Bill Evans master class on YT! The class includes an in-depth analysis of Bill's classic solo performance "A Time for Love". You will LOVE this, promise:) Type in "Dave Frank" on YT.
This past Saturday, June 25th,the 50th anniversary of these historic recordings, the Complete Vanguard recordings were in heavy rotation at my house. But then, Bill is spinning on the box pretty much every day around my place. :-)
@karnak5 this is coming from someone who 'digs' Bill Evans...absolutes in music are flawed by their nature. Listen to Art Tatum, Ahmad Jamal, Oscar Peterson, Bud Powell, etc., etc., etc., and it makes your statement...myopic? Is he one of the best??? Without question. THE best??? Hmmm...'your favorite' would hold more credibility IMO. Same with alekf86 re. 'best trio ever'...
@alekf86 Personally, I share that opinion. There's just something about the combination of Scott, Bill, and Paul. That said, there are other stellar trios: Oscar Peterson with Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen, the Nat King Cole Trio, the Ahmad Jamal trio...all fantastic in their own right. But again, with these three, it's just out of this world.
@hecbiz75 I would also put Peterson's quartet with NHOP, Joe Pass and Martin Drew up there as well. There's no way to say which group was best; all of them were masters who sadly left this earth far too soon. It makes me sad that I never got to hear many of these guys live (I would have loved to watch Evans but didn't really get into jazz until the 1980s); it still makes me sad that Clifford Brown is dead and he died six years before I was born.
@jimraw1 Oh, NHOP was awesome. Pretty much any band OP put together was going to swing your head off. I hear ya about not being able to see them live. My favorite living saxophonist was Michael Brecker (obviously up until he passed), and I never even got to see him. *sigh* I have seen some great ones: Charlie Haden, Ron Carter, Billy Taylor, TIto Puente (latin!!), Cachao (ditto!), Stanley Clarke, Eddie Gomez...(I'm a bass player.) So, that's something. I would've loved to see Jaco!!
@hecbiz75 Man Charlie Haden is a force, probably the most distinctive bass player of all time. I'll listen to him and try to understand where he came up with those ideas. For some reason i've never caught him live, although I did hear his son Josh play with Spain. You're absolutely right about Brecker - I call him the Steve Gadd of saxophone - able to play anything you needed.
@jimraw1 Haden is one of my all-time favorites. He's not flashy. He's all about pure expression, which I find quite appealing. That album he did with Pat Metheny - "Beyond the Missouri Sky" - HOLY CRAP! It's a masterpiece of understated brilliance. You can probably learn any of Haden's solos quickly, because they're not too technical. But, the question is - can you COME UP with that stuff in the spur of the moment? Now, THAT'S true artistry. // Brecker's music and sax playing will live on...
@hecbiz75 I forgot to add one more - Evans' last trio with Marc Johnson on bass and Joe LaBarbera on drums. Even though they only recorded one album (The Paris Concert), I think they rivaled anything that the Evans-LaFaro-Motian trio did; even Evans said it was probably his best trio. As much as I love Scott Lafaro, I equally love Michael Moore, one of the greatest and most underrated jazz basists.
Jazz bassist Linda Oh told the Wall Street Journal in a November 3, 2009 article that Scott LaFaro's playing on this song convinced her to switch from electric bass to acoustic bass. She also mentioned Ray Brown's playing on Oscar Peterson's Night Train, and Charlie Haden's Quartet West.
@magnusea thanks, great version of nardis (through the noise) but it was only an audio tape. really want to see the evans, lafaro and motian trio playing together.
It's called "Gloria's Step". It's the first musical track (the 1st track is an introduction) from "The Complete Vanguard Recordings 1961". There are actually 3 takes of this song on the complete recordings.
Check out Blossom Dearies first album...with the green cover. her with her glasses on at the piano. Her piano is the closest I've heard to Bill's sound. And it's a delightful album. the best of choices of songs...love it.
Some of the best music to listen, yesterday, today, and all our tomorrows, thanks to Bill, Scott and Paul, and of course, to the one and only, Orrin Keepnews...
This recording is the greatest ever of a piano trio. The interplay between Motian, La Faro and Evans has to be heard to be believed. If you asked me if I could go back in time to see a jazz gig, this would be it. Second would be an early Parker date at Minton's, third would be Benny Goodman at Carnegie Hall.
I had a record called, The City...maybe a 14 peice group led by what I know wasn't Tony Scott, but a name close to that, and all original compositions..all based on city themes...loved that kind of record...always something very special..WIsh I had that record now. never found it again, probably a cut out bought at a department store in 1967.
Mr. Keepnews' refreshingly humble recollection makes him that much more believable. The "golden age" of jazz was a rocky road, it seems. Thanks for sharing your priceless music!
Also, about '62 Evans and Adderly made a record called "Know What I Mean?". I had it years ago on vinyl - but have never found it on CD? Good record I remember.
Cannonball introduced a whole new style which was dubbed "soul jazz". It had a sort of R+B, gospel flavor to it as opposed to the straight ahead type of music done by Miles, Trane (at that time) etc.
