@kenoz71 wow he looks alot different. why on earth did he go from such a great rock and roll band to some of the gayest music in the world. such a sellout. I saw chicago perform live a couple years ago and their bass player sang lead on this song, it sounded just like cetera. No terry cath solo though. what a waste.
I saw Danny at the Chicago Drum Show a few years ago and I asked him about playing with Terry. That was such a cool moment for me, especially when he said that Terry was probably smiling down on us cuz I took the time to remember him that day. I shook Danny's hand twice that day (hoping some of the drumming magic would rub off), but I like to think that the second time was Terry shaking my hand through Danny. Thanks TK.
Could those who made the "100 Greatest Guitarist" list at Rolling Stone please tell me what guitar skill(s)Terry Kath did not have which left him off this list. The best guitarist of his day thought that he was a great guitarist.

Great video! Nice to see these guys at their best. I just finished reading Danny Seraphines book on this band. I guess they were not as innocent as people thought! James Pankow was a drunk, Robert Lamm was a coke head. Unreal! If you love this band than you MUST read Street Player by Danny. What an eye opener!
@geltier I just read that book yesterday....I literally could not put it down.....terrific insight to the band in the early years........and, for that matter up until 1990......
Terry was the heart and soul of this band...I was a little kid and all the older neighbor kids had the Chicago records. Great stuff. People forget just how cool this band was in the early days. Wow!
I was 16, me and my GF Patti went to the Arie Crown Theartre in Chicago to see the band Chicago. It was my very first concert. Watching this video brings back some very special memories. 35 plus years later I still love this band and their music. Without a doubt the most underappreciated American band ever! Watching Chicago in this video you can grasp just how fricking AMAZING they were!! Thanks for the awespome post. Hope you're doing well Patti...
Nobody Chicago has had on lead guitar has been able to come close to Terry Kath. They can't even copy his solos, much less come up with something as inovative on their own. Chicago simply became a commercial pop band after his untimely passing. Tris is good but does not have the energy or inovation of Danny in the early years. They were my favorite band for about 8 years. It makes me said when I think about what they have become.
amazing that this group has always been at their best vocally and musically, playing live. Always outstanding brass, and voices that's harmonies changed the current music trend. There hasn't been or will ever be never be a jazz / rock band like them. So glad I had a chance to see them in their early years in Schaumburg, IL. Great morries. Man, we used to have a blast at Beginnings. It seems so long ago, and there was nothing to compare to the greatest band Thank god they are ageless.
absolutely excellent footage. There are some others like I'm a Man 1970 or so, but they are in black and white. Ah, the great Terry Kath, such a great solo here.
now that I found these guys I must do some research on these Chicago albums, I prefer older music. Can anyone tell me the names of the best albums, your favorites old and new sure sure would be appriciated.
@TheBrowngab chicago transit authority, chicago 2, and chicago 3 are my favs. jimi hendrixs 'are you experienced', blind faiths self titled album, 'exile on main street' by the rolling stones, 'hotel california' by the eagles, check out the song '30 days in the hole' or 'hot and nasty' by humble pie, 'abbey road' from the beatles, led zeppelin 1, 2, 3, 4, 'cricklewood green' by ten years after, and a modern thing 'brothers' by the black keys.
WOW just incredible, I always thought Chicago was girls music lol when the wife asked if I could play some. Ha I laughed said sure and put some on. Next thing I'm thinking wtf this is smokin good, I always loved good playing, someone who can rock an instrument and man Terry rocks huge I'm blown away that he's getting notes and sounds great.
To bad he's passed on as it would have been cool to see how far his talent would have gone.
Hopefully he's still playing up in heaven passing on his talents
This is 1970?...no one was playing like that in 1970....not that I remember. That is why Hendrix told one of the horn players in Chicago that he thought Kath was amazing. I think Terry Kath was ahead of his time. I think that because the band was so horn focused, and because they went off into ballads mostly in the mid 70's, his guitar playing never got it's due.

IMHO, this band should have packed it up after Terry died because he was the heart and soul of Chicago. What an amazing, blazing guitarist (and vocalist).
To all. For what its worth? A far better, fairer and more sensible list, is "GIBSON's 50 Greatest Guitarists of all time" Though I dont agree with it totally either. Its more realistic than RS's.
I am a musician because of Terry Kath and Danny Seraphine. Oh, and the rest of Chicago was "instrumental" in helping me decide, too. Thanks to one and all for all the great music. Terry shouldn't just be ON the list of great guitarists, he should be AT THE TOP. We do this song at every gig and I love the looks on people's faces when they see this old white chick (me) playing the living hell out of this solo. What a damned shame that Terry isn't with us. Rest in peace, sir.
This is proof that Terry was the best player nobody has ever heard of. That Rolling Stone list is a joke. A bit surprising when you look at the team of judges though. Willie Nelson and Joni Mitchel are on the list. r u kidding me? Robert Johnson, Dicky Bets and Fripp don't even make the top 60. Who really believes that Zappa was better than Buddy Guy? Keith Richards at number 4 is laughable. Any decent bar band that covers the Stones likely has a better guitarist
@bsharpinLondon Zappa was quoted many times as saying he didn't think he (himself) was a very good guitarist! I agree completely - for Terry Kath not to be on the list and Robert Fripp being low on the list is absurd. RS and other critics make their picks based on their own personal tastes, not on talent/ability or innovation.
Have to agree, that's some playing for 1970. I've seen some right jokers on that Rolling Stone list of 100 guitarists. Mind you, I don't think RS is the bible of music.
Terry was one of the best guitar slingers of his time. He was an inspiration and it's because of players like Terry kath, Jimi Hendrix, Tommy Bolan that I have a career and still travel the world performing music that is part of their legacy.
Just got done reading Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Guitarists article and no mention of Terry Kath. Mike Campbell, George Harrison, Angus Young better than Kath? Harumph! They did give proper credit to Mick Taylor though... so that's sorta cool. I dunno, those lists are bullshit really.
@duffbrainard Shame on RS for putting out an 8th grade look at guitarists. Wouldn't it have been better to have a list of the most INFLUENTIAL guitarists rather than a "best" list? Idiots. Kath was an amazing guitarist, and inspired countless people, including me.
@LesKern Who reads RS anymore? If it were not for Matt Taibi, they would be fishwrapper! People forget Terry Kath, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter and the like. They simply know no better.
@duffbrainard The lists are total bullshit, just a Popularity contest based on the knowledge of the General Population.....LOL! A population that voted for GW twice!
@duffbrainard Yeah if you needed any further proof that those R.S. lists are bullshit, now you have it. Kath not in the top 100. Idiots. Recently they did 100 best Dylan songs and they forgot "Chimes of Freedom". And so on.
@duffbrainard Well Chicago is the 2nd most successful american rock band behind the Beach Boys but music critics hate them cause they never really 'celebritized' their music.
@duffbrainard U are absolutely right. Just send them this video. He could play guitar and bass, and sing. They and BSW were groundbreakers in giving the horns a voice while still maintaining a unique mix of rock and vocals. They should be in the Rock HOF but I ain't holding my breath since the RHOF is pretty screwed up. Great memories of Chicago.
@TtownJim : that joint of ppl shud had already retired frm vote'n cuz they don't knw wat-tha heck their do'n! cheers to all CHiCAgO rock group lovers!
@duffbrainard Agreed, those list are complete bullshit. Hendrix is quoted as saying Kath is one of his favorite guitarists. Those who know and understand music know Terry Kath was a brilliant guitarist.
@duffbrainard your comments just go to prove it's a trash rag. Mike Campbell is simply incredible. Did they include such greats as Robben Ford, Uli Roth, and George Kooyman of Golden Earring? Doubtful.
@duffbrainard I gave up on RS when the 100 Rock Vocalists List left off Freddie Mercury.Everyone is entitled to Their opinion,But to leave these 2 off is insane.
This incredible progressive jazz-rock band turning into the sappy pop group Chicago of the 80s & 90s would be like Jimi Hendrix turning into Lionel Ritchie ! It's like anything & everything that mattered, both musically & spiritually got sucked out of the band & sent to another planet & all that was left was pablum. Whereas before their uncompromising music lifted up millions with them to a higher level, later, by pandering they made sure everyone stayed at a retarded infant level.
@metamorphosis67 I totally agree! BTW you might want to switch to Colloseum LIVE, much the same venue as this one "prog jazz-rock" (but you most certainly already know that.......)
@47viviane Yeah, Colosseum with Dick Heckstall-Smith who played many horns at once, Roland Kirk style. Great band. Zappa was a fan of Heckstall-Smith & jammed with Colosseum in Europe. I also like Colosseum II where they had Gary Moore on guitar playing in the 70s fusion style, best stuff Moore ever played. I exchanged e-mails with Jon Hiseman, the drummer a few years ago. I don't remember how we got onto the topic of beers but he told me that his favorite beer was Peroni Nastro Azzuro.
Thanks so much for this upload. Love this band,I was too young to have seen them with all the original guys back in 1970. This video is the next best thing.
Lamm explained on The Chris Isaak Hour: "I was living with a bunch of hippies up above Sunset Strip. I wanted to try to describe the process of writing the song that I was writing. " So, 'waiting for the break of day, searching for something to say, flashing lights against the sky' - there was a neon sign across the city. That song came from the fact that it was 25 or 6 to 4am in the morning.
I saw Chicago 3 times in Toronto between 1970 and 1977. Except for maybe Santana, I never felt such energy like that genearted by Chicago. They were exceptional
Chicago was a great band that brought us all closer together. Terry was a great guitarist, but the whole band was phenominal....don't forget Peter Cetera....he was a driving force for the group, but also a great bass player. I remember the time in '73 or '74 the "warm-up group" was BTO....not bad for an evening concert.
Thats not Cetara is it?

Jimi Hendrix once told Terry he was a great guitar player. That says something.

I saw Chicago 3 times in Toronto between 1970 and 1977. Except for maybe Santana, I never felt such energy like that genearted by Chicago. They were exceptional

@baldy5027
Please remember, I wasn't there to see just TK .
Chicago was a great band that brought us all closer together. Terry was a great guitarist, but the whole band was phenominal....don't forget Peter Cetera....he was a driving force for the group, but also a great bass player. I remember the time in '73 or '74 the "warm-up group" was BTO....not bad for an evening concert.

seriously Terry Kath was ahead of his time...him and Hendrix.
