Caucau is good don't get me wrong. Although it seems you are going on the mantra ' form is temporary, class is permanent' which sadly does not cut it. Also rugby is professional so performance and fitness are important hence why SW is 34 and still playing international and would still be the jewel in any club squad around Europe and I would imagine attract a far higher wage bill that RC. The simple fact is SW is up there along the greats, RC is good, moments of brilliance but flash in the pan.

Caucau is average in the pantheon of world class wingers, Williams sits at the top table.

Loads of the tries he scores dancing around could be scored by other wingers through power and speed like Rococoko and Lomu, but the one starting at 5.14, only shane could have scored that.
@Samax13 that's cause they like attaking with their big centres :) if you're planning to attack with the wings, you have to stand little more deeper, thats how you can read the backline in how they're gonna play ^^
@Robinpeys backlines can stand flat and attack for wings. Just do a cross field kick for the wing which should isolate him 1v1 vs the other wing...its a very effective ploy...Argentina use that tactic alot (isolation) and its very effective..isolating fullback or wing. thats the best way for a defensive side to attack..cross field kick or a bomb..the ephasis is on the kick-chase...

IYGT - calling Wales a poor pack? Bit unfair considering they have beaten France about half of the games theyve played. Williams scored 51 tries when Wales were playing terrific rugby AND when they were playing poorly, thats what makes him a great player.
So, the next conclusion is that Shane found more opportunities than Cedric. The latter largely stayed on his wing and finished well what came his way. Shane went all over the park chasing opportunities and found more by so doing.
As has been previously mentioned, Shane also is a good distributor and makes space for others.
I was thinking about Shane over the weekend, in the context of a youtube video of some great play by Cedric Heymans.
If you watch the Heymans tries - trust me they are good - you might conclude as I did that Cedric is as good a finisher as Shane. Yet Shane has a much better strike rate per international played.

shane has done the business against everyone. hes scored several tries against aussie 2 of them match winners, hes scored 4 or 5 against the boks each time against habana, hes done france a few times , done england a few times, ireland a few times, new zealand a couple of times but never won against the mighty all blacks. scored loads against the scots, italians and fijians etc.52 test tries in 73 games and hes actually created even more + terrific workrate in defence and attack
The English backline have potential but the forwards are producing ruck ball at a glacial pace, getting turned over and allowing the opposition to slow down the posession. Danny Care is taking 2 steps before passing to further ruin Wilko's chances. When he does make a line break there is no support. At least Wales usually have support to off-load to and a player who can get you on the front foot in SW. England's forwards need to work harder and clear out with more agression.

Just do a cross field kick for the wing which should isolate him 1v1 vs the other wing...its a very effective ploy...Argentina use that tactic alot (isolation) and its very effective..isolating fullback or wing. thats the best way for a defensive side to attack..cross field kick or a bomb..the ephasis is on the kick-chase...

if you see an attacking backline standing rather flat you know you're gonna attack with the centres, wales liked this alot cause they had beasts as centres,
if you see them standing shallow, they'll attack the wing, cause they're more deeper, so they have more time to pass the ball to the wing.
and when kicking i dunno how you can tell if the 10 is kicking or not, i think he'll be rather mpre back from his 9 as usual :)

IYGT - calling Wales a poor pack? Bit unfair considering they have beaten France about half of the games theyve played. Williams scored 51 tries when Wales were playing terrific rugby AND when they were playing poorly, thats what makes him a great player.

As has been previously mentioned, Shane also is a good distributor and makes space for others.

I was thinking about Shane over the weekend, in the context of a youtube video of some great play by Cedric Heymans.
If you watch the Heymans tries - trust me they are good - you might conclude as I did that Cedric is as good a finisher as Shane. Yet Shane has a much better strike rate per international played.

for the last decade what do u think the HOME win ratio for a NH side is vs a NH side...and whats the AWAY(in SH) win ratio for a NH team. This pretty much sums it up. if SH team goes up north the win ratio vs 6N teams is about 66-75%.thats 2/3 or 3/4 wins..and when the north go down south their % win is about 20%,1/5 they win. thats also added to the fact that HUNDREDS of SH ply their trade in Europe now and dont play for their countries..no 6N players play in the SH..its all about cash v talent

no. Its not a fact tha hes a SH player...or small. size wize Jason Williams (ENG) was as small too but i didnt have any issues with him at all over his defense. Same with Cullen. The main SH/NH point of view was that SW got nominated with 4 other NH players by the IRB who *ALLEDGE* 2welsh 1 scot 1 italian and 1 pom are the worlds best player in 08...man WAKE UP...NH lose the MAJORITY of their games at home and RARELY win in the SH..so as soon as NH wins its *time to hand out the medals*

shane has done the business against everyone. hes scored several tries against aussie 2 of them match winners, hes scored 4 or 5 against the boks each time against habana, hes done france a few times , done england a few times, ireland a few times, new zealand a couple of times but never won against the mighty all blacks. scored loads against the scots, italians and fijians etc.52 test tries in 73 games and hes actually created even more + terrific workrate in defence and attack

The English backline have potential but the forwards are producing ruck ball at a glacial pace, getting turned over and allowing the opposition to slow down the posession. Danny Care is taking 2 steps before passing to further ruin Wilko's chances. When he does make a line break there is no support. At least Wales usually have support to off-load to and a player who can get you on the front foot in SW. England's forwards need to work harder and clear out with more agression.

I agree. The Welsh front row are as good as any. It's the back 5 where you lack although there is potential. And I also consider Martin Williams as an awesome, genuine openside, but he's on the wane.
If the Welsh get their pack sorted out, and uses Jamie Roberts a bit more like Geech did for the Lions, Wales will be awesome.
But Ickle deserved his award because he did what he did despite the team's shortcomings. If only England had half of the attacking ability of the Welsh backs.

he is a good broken field runner when hes playing vs a bad defensive line. He can easily exploit 4-5-6-8-10-12 ranked teams..but can he do it on a REGULAR occurance vs the top 3 teams..DONT THINK SO. Hes nippy, scored a nice try the other day. But his allround game: BAD DEFENSE, weak upper body strength. he get tackled by NZ he get dragged back 10m like a ragdoll! or they just run right over the top of him! Hes got pace and hes nippy..SO WHAT..rugby is DEFENSE also!

SW plays for Wales who are not the best team in the world. They have shite forwards who provide crap 1st phase ball and call upon players like SW to make things happen. In 2008, he did. The NZ players have a pack that supplies decent ball, making it easier for the outside backs to look good. It's not about what your team has won, it's about what an impact you have made; it's an individual award.
So now maybe you can understand why SW got the award now and calm the fuck down....

records?...what records? team or individual?...the AB side only play 1 or 2 of those nations once every 2 or 3 years. and we always play our B team. NZ has a NZ-A team that goes to the Islands to compete in the *Pacific Rim* tourney and have never lost. u need get your facts straight. NZ plays in the Tri-Nations. NZ-A plays in the Pac. Rim tourney. NZ Maori play in invitationals /old Churchill Cup and Jr ABs jst finished, we had 4teams all capable of beatn wales
