  • yesterday's gymnastics was mindblowing, today's gymnastics is breathtaking

For me it is the most gorgeous and spectacular sport, always was always will be, just for different reasons

  • she makes it look easy

  • Wow it seems that gymnastics today has gone down compared to this. I love this so much! It's easy to see why someone would fall in love with it! it has me!

  • Who's the gymnast at @2:08 - 2:12 love this bar routine, such speed and power. I kind of miss these routines where the bars were close together.

  • great montage fantastic work!

  • Gymnastics ain't what it use to be.

The competitors of today have nothing on these girls. Okay they might be able to pull off tougher skills but they don't seem to be as entertaining or elegant, it's all about the power, the floor exercises might aswell be called tumbling rounds, because they don't dance anymore...and the bars are just nothing to what they use to be.

    R.I.P old school Gymnastics.

  • some the cuts are good and that song don't match even match the video at all

  • Olga Korbut's success was definetly in her back arching. simply amazing

  • This is a FANTASTIC montage. Well done you, and I agree totally. Gym was so fab back then. And Shushunova = crazy

  • This is very well done. Thanks for taking the time to make it - to of course one of the best songs to increase the drama :)

  • Please, who is the girl on beam at 4:15-4:17? Thanks!!

  • Kristie Philips USA

  • wow, that is some AMAZING uneven bar work . . .

  • i think this was the gymnastics we all fell in love with <3<3<3 love it! thank god for nastia, anna pav, jiang yuyuan and daria joura for bringing it back

  • mattie larson does what the girl does at 0:39

    the bars are so cool

  • Who is that on bars at about 2:10?

  • Comment removed

  • I love the skill at .56 it looks like she's flying SO COOL!

  • you see the same things on beam aerial walkovers, tucks, and twisting dismounts

  • beam mounts have gone downhill

  • at 2;10---good God!! go girls!

  • yes the memories will remain.

  • I think gymnastic was more beautiful, had more plasticidade till 90's..Evolution is good, but i still prefer Mukhina, Korbut, Comaneci, Shoushonova, Silivas, Dobre,Boginskaia..Romania and former URSS were the most beautiful i have seen in gym. It was more ballet...In Beajing it was very similar, except for He Kexin with uneven bars

  • It seems there was so much more room for artistry. Now the routines are packed so tight . . . it's really too bad.

  • girl @ :45 is amazing

  • Tatiana Groshkova

  • wundervoll :)

  • wow what a tumbling pass 3:35 to 3:38! Who was that girl?

  • Natalia Lachenova

  • I love the moves on the uneven bars at around 2:25. you don't see moves like these anymore. Talk about originality back then!

  • Yeah, I agree.

  • The very BEST gymnastics was done from 1972-2000 in my opinion. After Patterson won in 2004, gymnastics went down hill, waaaaaay downhill! *I AM MAD*

  • Well compare Loshekos and Johnsons routines you might get what I'm saying. And I totally agree with you in this comment

  • I get what you're saying, I mean back in the old days Americans did have artistry (Shawn Johnson, Shannon Miller, etc.) now we have none.

  • Yes, I think soviets had alway artistry. And everything is not americans fault, but they just dumped the artistry at somepoint

  • Yeah, they have. I think Terin Humphrey was the last artistic American. Now, there are few that can dance. But if they can, it's certainly the Soviets (Joura, Kozich) =)

  • Yes, I think it's a shame that when the soviet union broke up so many of the gymnasts and their children moved to somwhere else. Think how stron would the ukranian or russian teams be with liukin joura...

  • No kidding!

  • Shannon Miller defined artistry. I loved watching her floor routines. Man I miss her!

  • Yeah, I don't watch her to often but I loved her 1992 routine, her 1996 routine was OK, but I didn't like the music too much...

  • I'm especially mad that no one can get a perfect 10 anymore. Even before the scoring system was changed, a perfect 10 wasn't awarded after 1992 that I'm aware of.

  • I think it's because of the new life, or something like that they call it. I don't mind the scoring system so much, but I think it should have a C score that rewards difficulty.

  • They may not have been throwing the tricks that gymnasts today throw, but look how innovative and perfect their routines are! Everyone in the video has perfect form, no one, not even Nastia!, has perfect form today. Hell, they're lucky if they stick a landing.

  • hate shawn and carly

  • Gymnastics isn't like this anymore. Thanks of that belongs to most american gymnastics. So many gymnast does not even have a really goreography like Daniela Drunceea or Shawn Johnson

  • That's not America's fault! Why would you even blame US about it? If the Chinese, Australians, Russians, and Romanians decided to drop coreagraphy like a hot potato, how does it make it OUR fault?

  • it's sad that nobody does things like this anymore :(

  • wow

  • I'm also in love with old gymnastics!

Who is that at 1:10 and the gymnasts from 2:10 to 2:20 and at 3:38 is that Laschenova?

  • The gymnast in white at 2:10 is Filatova and 3:38 is Laschenova. No idea about the others though :)

  • 1:10 is yang bo, i think.

  • Awesome compilation..really. Seems like most sports (extreme at least) get more progressive with time as people realize that more and more is possible. These girls were doing combinations I had never seen before.. what happened to some of this style??

  • some times its because of laws, trainers/coaches can purposly push the children around - they can push you a tiny bit but if they really damage you then they get prisioned and stuff like that, and some times the training is just to hard for some people

?? i dunno really but yeh those are my ideas

  • These athletes do simply INCREDIBLE stuff!

  • wow the uneven bars were so close together, i had no idea. when did they change to the way they are now? they've been far apart as long as i can remember.

  • 2.14 is insane!

  • i agree TOTALLY... gymnastics 10 years ago was SOOOO much better than now, everything was just so much better.... the skills, dancing, coaching, EVERYTHING.... i lovED gymnatics before:)

  • Holy shit, who's the girl at 2:10? And at 3:28 (powerful tumbler!)?

  • maria filatova, and tatiana gutsu (:

  • Thanks! Can't believe I didn't recognize Gutsu..

  • i've got agree with you guys, gymnastics is MUCH harder now

  • I agree. When it comes to my heart in gymnastics, it belongs to the 1996 Olympics.

  • In my case my heart belongs to the 1996 and 2000 Olympics, it wasn't the same in 2004 and today's gymnastics... so different and not exactly in the best way.

  • I think it's the Code of Points. But I must admit, I've fallen for Nastia Liukin. Her elegance is almost unparalleled.

  • If you want to parallel Nastia, just look at the perfect gymnast that came before her. Nadia Comaneci. She was the first to get a perfect ten not just once but seven times!

Nadia is the only one who is unparalleled. Plus, Nastia isn't that perfect if you watch her routines, she messes up, so her elegance and ability is almost perfect as Nadia's but not quite. She is the closest the world has seen since Nadia's time though.

  • they still do some of the uneven bars moves, but theyre harder (especially the transitions) because the bars are farther apart

  • im glad they're farther apart. that way we dont hafta break our hips banging them against the bar. plus it make the apparatus much more stable. if youll notice in the old gymnastics the bars are always collapsing.

  • A 2,14 c'est l'excellllllente Oksana Omeliantchik... plus ou moins 1985

  • Who is the gymnast at 2:14 and what competition was she in when she was performing ont he bars in your montage?

  • this video is cool. I'm doing gymnastics at a high level for 9 years now and I love it. My favourite are the uneven bars and the balance beam. Gymnastics is so awesome, I can't live without. Great video !!

  • You need to remember that the reason gymnastics was more spectacular back then was because the coaches were pushing their gymnasts beyond the limits of physical safety. When they hit, it was great. But there was a lot more nasty stuff that had to happen to make it great.

  • sadly true. I think in the comeneci Olympics you could see on neli Kim's face the dichotomy: ask your coach to train you harder, but if you couldn;t do it others could. Is that short hair nadia killing on the bars?

  • actually i think i have to disagree with you there. because gymnastics was a lot simpler and routines were easier back then, of course coaches had to push the gymnasts but that was nothing compared to know.

  • Routines on the balance beam and vault are harder but the uneven bars have gone downhill.

  • routines are harder, and coaches are demanding so much from girls whose bodies aren't capable of performing skills like that at such a young age.

  • gymnastics was special and beautiful back then was because there was exquisite dance and routines were more based on perfection rather than difficulty. now gymnastics is just tumbling, difficult skills, tumbling and difficult skills. the dance is no way near as spectacular as it used to be and probably never will and because music back then was more piano, gymnasts could move slower which is what made them so elegant.

  • and gymnasts now pick dynamic music to involve the crowd and the judges and so they can connect skills with the music. but i do support the uneven bars seperation because it hurt the gymnast's hips everytime they hit the low bar. ouch!

  • Awesome!! I have just come across your stuff. This was my era of gymnastics mania as well! Thanks :D

  • Is that gymnast at about 0:35 Vera Cerna of Czechozlovakia?

  • Yes it is.

  • between about 35 and 45..that girl is amazing. The little girls that can do this stuff. Wow..its just so amazing

  • Yeah that was Tatiana Groshkova. She was amazing, unfortunately however she was too inconsistant to ever make a world or olympic team.

  • That's amazing they were doing that stuff in the 70's! Very amazing, great vids!

  • indeed...

  • i love this! i do think gymnastics will never be the way it was (as shown in this video). there was just something about the way it used to be. and although gymnastics has really changed, i do think there is something to be said about today's gymnastics, even if we don't know quite what it is yet. there ARE some who still have beautiful gymnastics.

  • Thanks a lot for posting this video! I have always loved gymnastics and would love more of these! Do you have Nadia Comaneci's routines from the 1976 Montreal Olympics?

  • Does anyone possess any video of Carol Johnston, also known as "Lefty?" She was a US gymnast of some national prominence....notable because she only has one arm. This is a feat which I dont think could be accomplished in today's gymnastics environment. But I'd love to see some archive footage. Anyone know of any?

  • I don't have anything, but I'm sure I've seen a movie of her once. And kwinkletoes, I'm sure if you searched Nadia on youtube you'd be able to find her routines from Montreal. Yes they do exist.
