  • Worked like a charm! The google apps didn't install properly the first time around, but other than that things went exactly as described in the video. Thank you!

  • Are you able to convert back to a Normal Nook?

  • I want this video on my W920 phone.

  • This root worked for my wife's NOOKcolor, except toward the end, when installing a couple of the apps (youtube and another), it said the install failed. I skipped them and finished the install. Then later, I went to the Market and tried to download the Kindle app and Youtube again, and it said the apps were not compatible with this device. Any suggestions to get it to be able to download them? Fyi: Angry Birds downloaded and installed normally.

  • After I finish the installation process and reboot, I keep getting the message INSTALLATION FAILED, is it because I have the 1.4.1 software???

  • I have mine rooted but now I am trying to use the sd card for the barnes and noble app and it says that there is no sd card inserted when there really is. My question is can I remove all the zip files other files that were used to root it.

  • Awes0me vid but should i root mine? I heard that when u root it, it doesnt let u sign in to ur B&N account. Or sometimes it doesnt work and Barnes and Noble doesnt offer a refund if it breaks while being rooted?

  • Hi, Thx for posting. I have searched for an answer on this and the pc comments sections, but have not found anything. If I have a 32GB class 10 card, (PNY) do I have to install the 16gb clockwork mod, or should I use a different version. Will this affect my space or how it performs? Thanks for any help out there. All I have done so far is nooted my NC but it just isn't enough. I want to enable bluetooth and overclock...thx again.

  • I followed all the instructions, everything worked except for formatting the data. When I did the system reboot it says it failed and to turn off my nook and turn it on again. So I did and it turned on, but it's stuck at the revolving arrow around the android dude. I've tried turning it off and on again, same thing. I've tried turning it off and then holding down the power and nook button at the same time.. nothing. I'm freaking out cuz now I can't do ANYTHING with my nook! :( Please HELP!!!

  • the clockwork file isn't decompressing

  • Your vid is a favorite on Vaiaku village, Funafuti province

  • I didn't get the loading text... it said boot and everything but not booting up like it should...

  • I also never got the little android guy and the welcome to nook color. I have tried several times now and am so frustrated.

  • When I finally got everything installed, I never got the Welcome to NookColor screen and although I have CM7, I have no marketplace. For now, I am un-Rooting and going to Nook 1.4 because I really want Netflix.

  • I DID EVERYTHING AND I GOT IT TO TURN ON. IT IS ROOTED BUT I DON'T SEE A MARKET PLACE. PLEASE HELP

  • problem at part of burning the file to the micro sd card: no such file in directory

  • No Market app was found on my Nook once Android opened....I followed all instructions but had to take the extra steps to change my partition scheme. But still the market is not on my color. How can I fix this issue?

  • terminal will not let me unmount my sd card

  • can u read on this

  • Ok so for everyone who is having problems and Getting an "Error: can't format /data" error and is getting stuck at the CM7 boot. This is what I did and it worked for me.

    1. Follow the instructions on the video

    2. after the system reboot power the nook off.

3 after nook is powered off hold the Power Button and the Home Button at the same time.

This will do a factory reset. It will then restart your nook color and after that it should work.

  • I am also getting the formatting data error. Any ideas?

  • I am also getting the formatting data error. Any ideas?

  • I'm getting an error it says it can't format data what do I do

  • when I format data it gives me an error what do I do?

  • Hi will this work for firmware 1.4.1

  • i did not get a market app

  • Hey huskermania, I am running on nook's new software 1.3. I followed all of your insturctions and got to the last step where you "reboot" the nook to install CM7. when I turned the nook on though, I just got the normal screen followed by the usual nook device. All of the applications are still on micro SD card, according to the nook. Is this due to the new update? Please help!

  • what if i have a 32 gig card?

  • i have a problem with cm7 after its installed on the micro sd card :( when you go to install from sd and you select cm7 it says E:can't open /sdcard/cm-7.zip (bad) what to do? i tried both versions you have linked here :(

  • it would have been helpful to make it more clear that this won't work on the newer NC running 1.3, rather than just having it at the end of the description somewhere. Now, I'm trying to figure out how to get this working again.

That said, the video was really clear...

  • @phritz20 what do you do with 1.3

  • Just finished rooting... no Android Market. Help please!

  • Great video, very easy to follow. Is it possible to switch back over to the nook's system to read books?

  • done but dont see market place

  • im stuck at the part where i hit enter after the ddif part can someone help

  • Excellent and clear instructions. Working perfectly for me! Thank you very mcuh.

  • @mlellison How did yours work? Just did mine twice and had the same issue. Android Market isn't showing up. If you could give some tips, I would greatly appreciate it.

  • @rachelfphotos working great! The market is in the apps folder (I think) it's the square with the smaller squares inside of it, click on that and then you should see the market. Is that what you're talking about? I'm not technically savvy re: all of this, so if I missed on this one, let me know.

  • me too stuck on cm7 boot animation. rebooted abouta dozen times. any ideas?

  • I continue to get the error formatting/ data! Is there a reason for this? My nook is completely useless now. Has anyone else had this problem as well?

  • @frankyortega I did too. I'm using a 32 gig card. I'm not sure if maybe that's the issue seeing as there are no CM7 links for 32 gig cards???

  • That was amazing...great tutorial.

  • Thanks dude, it worked amazingly good for me.

  • I get a message that says cant open cm7.zip (bad) Installation aborted

  • this video instruction does not work...my nook is stuck on the cyanogen mod screen...i attempted more than 6 reboots and it did not work..so my nook is a brick now and i gotta figure out myself how to unbrick/unroot it

  • @euromutt17 are you still stuck? I am also stuck at cm7 boot animation. let me know if you had figured out anything. thanks.

  • @rgogada Hey, so I restored my nook to factory settings first and went back to installing nookie froyo instead...FYI...nookie froyo is the only root i've tried that is stable and offers full android market functionality, the rest of the other roots wont let you install netflix, etc...goodluck man

  • Does this work for 1.3

  • i am also having the problem that says "no such file or directory"

How do i fix this issue?! THANKS

  • when im on the step that actually burns the cwr onto the sd card, terminal says no such file or directory. Is it because of my username is typed wrong? there is a space in my username so would i put a _ or do I just use a regular space or should i just type it without a space? if it could be something else, please tell me!

    thanks!

  • Is this applicable to "blue dot" Nooks?

  • thx for the new info , worked like a charm

  • how do you delete the android apps on your nook that you don't want?

  • Thanks for your video! Really helpful!

For those of you using a larger SD card, you can choose the 1 or 2 GB ClockworkMod Recovery. It's just going to partition 1 or 2GB out of the 16GB which should be more than enough, and it won't take 8 hours. You can reformat it afterwards for other uses.

  • @Moogle0Moogle How do you do that?

  • @xTripl3Troubl3x Reformat it or put the image on the card?

  • THANK YOU!! I wish I had found this video two days ago. So clear and helpful. Makes it so much easier when you can actually see what's happening. Great job!

  • Help! Everything moved along %100 as you described until " - format /data" (approx 10:45)

    I'm getting a message "Error formatting /data"

Didn't want to move along any further until trying you first as you seem %100 in this process.

  • I KEEP GETTING NO SUCH FILE OR DIRECTORY WHEN I TRY TO BURN CLOCKWORK MOD RECOVERY, WHAT AM I DOING WRONG?

  • Hi, love the video. didn't have any problems. I just don't know how to get the books back on there. Is there a way?

  • installing cm7 aborted.

    paper weight

  • @aloewishus so i grabbed updated 7.0.3 and downloaded it, making sure the browser didn't unzip it automatically by setting the pref in my safari. after that i tried again and it is working. yay!

  • @ spencymills - so I got my nook today and inserted the MicroSD card and it booted -- so even though terminal never told me it was done -- it was done. Have happily been modded for 1 day now. Very simple. I did have to go through and fix theerror formatting data -- although I have a "new nook" -- I had to use the old file on the link that huskermania provided.

@ mightymorphosis -- read my last 2 lines.

  • Everything went well until format data. I am now getting Error formatting/data! I have tried it several times and rebooted with the card out and then replaced and it will not go past this error. Did a search but don't see the next step to try Any ideas?

  • why can't i install Facebook, youtube and google maps from the market place?

  • I got a "Install Failed" error before getting the CM7 animation. Does that mean there was a major error?

  • every time i boot into clockwork, it keeps giving me an error message that says "cannot format data" when ever i try to format the data. how do i fix this?

  • @huskermania if i root my nook this way does that allow me to install rom manager so i can download other roms if i decide i want to try a different rom or whatever

  • Hi huskermania -- I left the terminal running all day when I was at work -- when I returned the terminal said nothing but upon ejecting and reinserting the card it was named boot -- with a few files on it -- is there anyway to tell if the process was completed correctly? My computer had somehow locked itself -- although sleep mode and the screensaver were disabled. Can you help me with someway to know if the image was burned properly?

    thanks.

  • I am having this same problem. The terminal will run for hours and never say the transfer is completed. I would really appreciate some advise on how to dix this problem.

  • @trippdaniels did @huskermania reply? My 16gb card has been "burning" for two hours now and nothing. can you let me know what has been your progress?

  • @efemdesign I just let it run for a long long time 8 hours -- when I got home from work it still did not show any other messages. I pulled the card out... reinserted and it showed up as boot -- and it worked. Try it. Good luck.

  • I am struggling with this to the fullest I downloaded the cr file and unarchived it also downloaded the 2 other files cm7 and google apps file. Then go though the terminal to do the rest all are sucessful. When I put the 2 files on the sd card and then put it on the nook when it is time to unzip the cm7 file it can not be found PLEASE PLEASE help me. I have been up with this for at least 6 hours trying and trying again. Can you email me to my personal email please justcolt75@yahoo.com. Thank you

  • Hello there, I followed your instruction and everything works but I have no android market and google apps. Android is running on it and since I followed all your instructions, what do you think went wrong or what do you suggest I do? I must say your instructions are fairly easy to follow and wonderful. I really hope that you or anybody that has encountered the same problem can help me figure this out. Thank you in advance. Ben

  • Hey, I'm at the part when you open the terminal and you enter dd if=/Users/YourUsername/Desktop/clockwork.img of=/dev/disk#. When I do that with my username and my microSD card number it comes up with "dd: /Users/michaelroller/Desktop/clockwork.img: No such file or directory" What should I do?

  • I also noticed before this step that when you open the cwr.gz you said it should say "unarchiving cwr.tar.gz" well mine only says "unarchiving cwr.gz

  • @mroller901 Your path is wrong. Either you typed your username in wrong or clockwork.img is not on your desktop.

  • I Can't seem to install the google apps. I need some help

  • I am having the same problem. The android runs but I don't have the android market or any of the google apps. Did you find a solution?

  • @huskermania do you by any chance happen to live in Nebraska? I'm probably wrong, but your username just made me wonder.

  • Hello there!, I am stuck in the part where I install the cm7.zip on my nook, i get the following message: E: Can't open /sdcard/cm7.zip (bad) Installation aborted.

Please help, im not an expert, just someone following instructions, thanks so much

  • I have rooted two nooks using this video. Very easy! The first nook was an older one and I for the newer nook I used the link for re-partitioning. No issues here! Nice!

  • I followed your steps and the market app did not appear. Please help on what I did wrong.

  • miui vid?

  • I had to use generic -sdcard-v1.2.1.img.gz to get the image file, because the one you describe in the vid didn't have a choice for a 16GB card.........anyway, when I double click that file, the .gz extension went away, and a "Boot" folder also appears...............

    then, , when I go to Terminal to check on disk....I see a FDisk-partition-scheme (disk2) choice, and a Windows_FAT_32 (disk2s1) choice........ I AM running a MAC........... which do I choose, , ??

  • @buetow63

Ok..........I chose to try doing it to the FAT32 choice......indicates "no such file or directory"............I've been trying to do this "simple" thing since yesterday............so frustrating!! please help!

  • after installing all the programs and when you reboot it without the card, should a download failed screen pop up, because once i restart it after that the cm7 booting screen pops up

  • if i dont like what it does, am i able to reset my nook back to factory settings and to how it was when i got it?

  • 8gig sd card class 4has taken so far 3 hours to burn the image to.... wtf

  • I don't have any problem when i format system, data and cache but when I get to the part where I need to install the cm7 zip file..it aborts :(. When I downloaded the zip files..they automatically decompressed and I would just click them to compress them again into zip files. Is that my problem right there or is it something else?

  • PLEASE SOMEONE HELP!! I'M A NOOB..I KEEP GETTING THE INSTALLATION ABORTED MESSAGE EVERYTIME IT TRIES TO INSTALL AN UPDATE! WHAT DO I DO?

  • I need some help. I have followed both Mac and PC version and every thing works great but google apps isn't installing. I have tried it on all of the three stable versions of CM7 but it still won't show up. I install it after I install CM7 in clockwork recovery but when it boots up it's not showing up. I have a 8GB micro SD card. Do you know how i can get google apps on my nook? Please respond as soon as you can.

    THanks!

  • could you do a tutorial on installing cm7 on the microsd card?

  • it wont let me format data

  • its been almost an hour since i started the terminal step. should i be worried about how long it is taking to burn?

  • Booted up great... added googleapp.zip in clockwork. My nook doesn't come with a market place.

    Please help.

  • Today, 7/14/2011, i installed CM7 V0.7.3, the latest stable, without any problem, on my NC V1.2.0, except Bluetooth that seems don't work.

Just a moment of panic when NC does not want to begin a new life!!

After a second attempt all go right and now i'm very happy!

    Enjoy all.

  • very noob question, but if I install this does it completely remove stock software? I was looking into honeycomb because I like the fact that it boots from sd, and to get stock back all you have to do is boot up with card inserted. is this a similar method?

  • I was successful with the cm7 installation, however the nook does not show up in devices when I plug it into my Mac. What's up?

And thanks for your great video!

  • you rawk!! :)

  • I have a bunch of books on an SD Card and I don't know how to have the Nook app access the files on the card. Could anyone help me with this?

  • When I am at the unzip step. I get this error after attempting to unzip cm7.zip

    E: Can't open /sdcard/cm7.zip

    (bad)

    Installation aborted

    What did I do wrong?

  • Hey, i just got my nook last week and followed all the instructions, but ended up getting the "Error: can't format/data". i went to the provided link but it still didn't help. I put the the repartition and reformat files on the sd card, but it brought me to a bunch a folders leading no where (tool>google>android). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

  • @Aclockworkari Did you figure out what was wrong? I'm having a similar problem.

  • Does it work with Nook Color v1.2?

  • What happens to the books and apps already downloaded after rooting is complete?

  • Just followed these directions to root my wife's nook, worked perfectly, thank you!!!

  • Tried to follow those instructions to fix the "error formatting/data for the newer nook" and no luck still getting the same error. Did anybody get it right?

    Thanks

  • if i have a 16 gb micro sd or even a 32 gb, which clockwork mod recovery file would i pick? the 8gb or do i need to find one for that specific size?

  • The Welcome to NookColor android setup did not open up for me, is there a workaround for that?

  • For those having the "E:Can't open /sdcard/cm7.zip" Just go back to the download link for cm7. Instead of doing "save link as", just left click normally. It will go to another page with the correct download link for CM7. If your CM7.zip file is just 4kb, you did it wrong.

  • @geloracela incredible, your advice saved me time :)...I was doing 'md5' check which passed since the files were identical, but didn't realize the size was 4kb!

  • Can't install CM7.zip. I keep getting an error saying:

    E:Can't open /sdcard/cm7.zip

    (bad)

    Installation Aborted

I can reinstall the stock nook software, but I WANT GINGERBREAD!!!! Please help.

By the way Husker, GREAT instructions. Very easy to follow....

  • @ItsMathematics

Nevermind. The cm7.zip file I downloaded was only 4kb.

  • @ItsMathematics

i had the same problem, just go back to the download page, instead of right click->save as, DO click on the mirror link and get your real CM7, which should be approx 93M in size~

  • after trying to write the ROM file onto the sd card i still get this message after numerous attempts

    dd: /dev/disk1: Permission denied

    81929+0 records in

    81928+0 records out

    41947136 bytes transferred in 41.976977 secs (999289 bytes/sec)

ive checked and made sure that the sdcard says read/write so i dont know what the problem is. can you help please?

  • @jas1660

I had the same problem, but then used the archive utility program to expand the zip instead of the default unarchiver. It made all the difference.

  • Thank you sooooo much u rock works perfectly

  • Can i still have my books and apps i got from the regular nook store.

  • Ever since B&N sent an update my Nook is not the same anymore it shuts off and restart.. Is there anything I can do to solve this?

  • I did this procedure twice and could not get a hold of the mrketplace..I tried the 2nd link you provided for the diffrent version of the cm7.what could i do now?

  • i installed CM7 on my nook color but the Android marker icon did not install what did I do wrong and how do I fix this

  • ok what i did that worked in the end: everything in this video BUT

I made sure to use cwm 3.2.0.1 because apparently my nook is partitioned different than the one here if I remember correctly. booted up just fine.

great video. I'm sure it has helped MANY people.

Want to make one with how to put the OC kernel on a CM7.0.3 ? Mine keeps freezing when I click 1200mhz or 1300mhz...

  • FYI, I was having lots of trouble getting it to repartition, so I followed your advice above. However, only the "old" install package worked for me (just got my NC yesterday). Just thought I'd post in case others got frustrated.

Great video, btw--thank you very much! It's been a long time since I've done any IT futzing, and I a little nervous. Your initial instructions and all your follow-up commentary is really helpful and clear.

  • need to know if I need to unroot nook in order to upload cyanogenmod 7 onto nook color

  • Does this work with the blue dot nooks?

  • And also, it doesn't say install failed, it just goes on with the normal bootup

  • I just tried this and the nook still starts ups and the screen flashes and then the read forever comes up. What is the problem? Just bought my nook yesterday for my bday

  • shoot. i was already rooted and tried to do this. now it wont turn on. what should i do?

  • just FYI. I got my hands on a 2gb msd card and retried. Again, it displayed "read forever" and failed to install. I just got my nook color off craigslist and it was apparently bought in december. I have reformatted my msd card and tried again and no luck. Any ideas?

    Thanks!

  • OK for some reason my splash screen says "read forever" instead, then it flashed a nook background for .5 seconds then says install failed or something like that. I don't know what to do.

  • is my nook color rooted if i do this?

  • 5 hours later clockwork wrote to my card. I just let it go over night.

  • the clockwork writing to the sc card seems to take forever on my i3 27" iMac... is this normal? (i thought it didn't work, so i pulled the sd card out after an hour and tried again).

  • oh, and I apologize if I've missed it but will this work on a 1.2 nook?

  • Also, I'm approaching 1.5 hours to burn clockwork.img to my 8gb sd card. is that normal?

  • Hey Husker! Killer video. It couldn't be more clear.

I'm in the process of burning to my sd card and just wondering if anyone has had any success in the past couple days. Should I still expect to potentially have problems with market? Any clue as to what determines if a person will have problems or not?

Also: one piece of constructive criticism. It would be nice if you could make it clear as to what state the sd card should be in at the beginning of this process.

    Thanks again Husker!

  • would this process work similarily with Cyanogenmod 7 nightly for the T-Mobile LG G2x? I am on OS X 10.6.x and new to Android. I am not very satisfied with the stock T-Mobile FroYo 2.2.2 ROM. I would much like to switch, but not finding specific instructions about doing so with the G2x and OS X. Any help?

  • does this work on stock nook 1.0.1

  • I did everything and it works fine however I can't find the Marketplace. Is there somewhere else I should look or another way to install it?

  • When I try applying the cm7.02 (the one used if you can't get the android market) i keep getting a "installation aborted" message on my nook. Is there any way to fix this or an alternate way of installing the android market?

  • Forgot to mention that the issue with OverDrive only occurs when trying to read borrowed public library books

  • Followed your directions and all is running fine. Thanks but I have 2 problems.

    1. am trying to use OverDrive Media and when attempt to download file am asked for Adobe ID-- enter it but can not get authorization on this device. I did have it prior to rooting. Any fix idea?

    2. having trouble adding flash.apk. Do you have a suggestion?

Thanks for all of your information.

  • Getting an "Error: can't format /data" error? I updated the description with a link that shows you how to resolve that issue. It seems like the new NCs have a different partitioning scheme vs the older ones...

  • You have done an excellent job of instructing idiots like me. Thank you. I'm having a problem, however, with installing from the SD card (user error, I'm sure). When trying to 'format data' I get this: "error formatting /data!". I've tried skipping this step and going directly to installing CM7 after formatting cache, but the installation aborts. Any thoughts?
