Whether or not he could have gotten away with it is irrelevant (even thought he could justify it as self defence after whoever threw the battery physically attacked Shawn).

Most people have this marvellous thing called "peripheral vision". Even though I'm looking and focussing on this screen I will be able to notice something moving in the outer edges of my vision. It'd be pretty noticeable if the guy in front of me threw something into the ring.
