As I recall this album went 'lead' in the States selling similar numbers to David Hasselhoff's 'Night Rocker'(somebody submit that gem). Maybe the band had Spinal Tap Syndrome and they where big in Japan. Another act I have to scratch my head at how they got signed to a major label as they blended in much more than they stood out.

Signed by Chrysalis Records,the British label who had a handful of hard rock/metal bands in their arsenal, including Armored Saint,Billy Idol, Slaughter,Stage Dolls,Trouble Tribe, & Vinnie Vincent Invasion. Child's Play might be called a poor man's 'Kix' as they where also from the Maryland but not as talented IMO. The music video for 'Rat Race' barely made a blip on 'Headbangers Ball' radar with the lead singer playing guitar with his gloves on (poser alert! with the velvet touch)

I think you may recall that rat race went to number one on headbangers ball, but MTV pulled it after that second week thinking the band had hired a telemarking company to call in. They later appologized on air with that blonde pretty boy(adam?) and re-aired the video but the band never recovered from it. Nicest guys ever and very underrated.

I saw this video when it first came out. Never heard of them or this song ever again. But that line "I'm not, apart of, the RAT RACE!" has stuck in my head ever since. Hearing now for the first time in 20 years, it still sounds exactly as I remember it. Awesome song!

Thanks for posting! I used to go see them at Network and Hammerjacks too. I was stranded at HJ's one night asking for a ride, and Johnny drove me all the way to Harford County in that jacked up primered Nova he had - good times. I just saw Johnny at a CSD show last Fall and thanked him for the ride, 20 some years later!

I remember the Hammerjack's days! I was lucky enough to become friends with Brian and I miss the old days for sure. Hope he's doing well and still performing. He's got a truly amazing voice with a killer personality to boot. Awesome guy.

I grew up in the DC/MD/VA scene with these guys and other great bands as my heroes. I feel very fortunate to have been here then. Check out 'Charm City Devils', too. John Allen is the frontman for that band, and he was this band's drummer. They're great too, btw.

Brian Jack was awesome! As was Nicky,Idzi and John. I had the pleasure of opening a gig in Massachusetts on this tour for them. They killed the place. Real gentlemen as well. They shoulda been HUGE as their sound was.

with out a doubt the most under rated band of the early 90's. Amazing shows, great writing, great music. This song doesnt' even begin to touch how talented they were. Evicted, Woman, Wind, When hell freezes over, I can't believe, Foolish pride, Long way and of course Time(which could have been John's personal anthem)'

I followed this band from 1986-1990 when I lived in Maryland. Why they never made it big is beyond me. Watching this video brings back GREAT memories!! Like when I won the 98 Rock Cruise with Child's Play in the Baltimore Harbor, and John Allen tossed me a cracked cymbal and broken drum stick. I bet I looked stupid carrying that cymbal out of Hammerjack's with me, but those were the days!!!!! :)

Use to open up for these guys around 1984-1986 in Baltimore. Good people, great memories....The Capricorn in Baltimore was the ultimate and I played the final show with these guys and other bands....What a show.

Wow, you can find anything on YouTube including Chid's Play. I loved them in the 80's. They were really popular around in the DC/VA/MD/PA areas. I saw them a few times. I still have John Allen's drumstick from a show in the early 90's. I loved John's long hair.
