Perhaps you should take your book back unless of course it mentions the differences between those two very similar guys. The most important of which is 10 years in jail and $100,000 fine. Think of the AR-15 as the civilian version of the M-16. With the right parts you can even convert the AR-15 to an M-16. Just remember the jail time and fine if you do.

There are many many more states in which you can own assault weapons and machine guns.
The only states that you cannot own a machine gun in are, Washington, Rhode Island, New York, Kansas, Iowa, Hawaii, and Delaware.
The vast majority of the rest of the United States you can fairly easily own a machine gun. Course they are expensive.
