  • It's a good idea if this is as free of dogma as it should be.

  • Looks just like many Scout Camps I went on. I'm an athiest, but I don't think we need our own version of Scouts. It's pretty removed from Religion now day.

  • This whole camp just strikes me as child indoctrination.

  • @Pleinair92

At least it is beneficial - human civilization is build on science, logic and critical thinking. While they leave the existence of God the benefit of a doubt, at least they don't try to make their kids complete idiots with hostility towards knowledge, like religious fundamentalists

  • I wish I could have attended something like this as a kid! It's great that children are learning that it is okay to question what they are told. I had a hard time figuring that one out on my own, about 16 years old by the time I had it that figured out. Ha! It's almost like struggling with an external form of self-awareness/cause and effect. (Sorry, proper words escape me.) It was hard dealing with that kind of thing as a young adult.

  • what the fuck?

  • Exelent!.....we ned more this camp,We mast aboid the deperedadores and ather kind of espiritual seller jejejejeje And spanish we kalled RAPIÑAS .......espirituales

  • Aw... those poor kids, they'll never get the prize for disproving the undetectable unicorns! It can't be done by definition!

  • Theistic evolution is the proper philosophical view regarding this, as Simon-Conway Morris said: Evolution is true, it happens, it is the way the world is, and we too are one of its products. This does not mean that evolution does not have metaphysical implications; I remain convinced that this is the case. So ultimately I would blame this misunderstanding about evolution in the part of atheists and creationists alike, like I said before: dyslexia of reason :P

  • I really don't mind if atheists' kids have their own summer camp, disabled people need to bond with each other

  • The trouble is religion has disabled us; they have control of our governments, most schools and our national health. I beg people to take a degree in genetics, biochemistry, embryology actually pretty much any science, then people will realise they are blinded by their ignorance and realise we are nothing more than a great ape!

I dont expect you to understand notions such as DNA, chromosomes, quorum sensing bacterium, one of these are responsible for every living thing on this planet, which?

  • Why do you think most scientists are atheists? is it because they are freethinkers no! its because we understand what drives every living cell. Within the past 10 years, molecular biology has truly killed off any thoughts of a creator, unless this creator/s likes to have fun with programming us to work and fail and the same time, or could this just be a sick joke? This is the notion that you have to accept if you believe in allah/god, jesus, krishna or zues etc.

  • oh! but remember, the world famous geneticist and head of NIH is Francis Collins, a devout Christian, I'm sure he won't agree with you on this matter, remember he said science is the language of God, to me, atheism is merely a dyslexia of reason

  • Firstly, I said 'most scientists'! Secondly, these minds are easily persuaded once you explain the how and why.

I was a christian until I was around 18/19, I was a deluded as the next person, my mind was unlocked by science, and this was well before I heard of Prof. Dawkins.

To confirm my loss of faith I read the bible from start to finish, in doing this took away any faith I had left, this is a far better way to destroy ones belief in the abrahamic god. We are not told about the nonsense.

  • As the famous biologist E.O. Wilson said: scientists should offer the hand of friendship to religious leaders and build an alliance with them, It is an illusion to think that scientific humanism and learning will dispel religious belief. Religious practices confer biological advantage like objectification and commitment through faith

  • As for Prof E.O. Wilson, you are right, he believes in evolution and religion however, if only he tapped into the knowledge of the so called 'bad design' evolution can and does explain why things like our eye sight is poor, the prostate gland has a small tube running through the middle of tissue which easily get infected causing swelling and incredible pain that can lead to cancer, who in their right mind would design such a thing, look at our backs, the supporting function of a back is in the

  • Cont.

Middle, who and what would create a supporting function in the middle of any structure? However, evolution can explain this. 1% of us have small cervical vertebrae in our necks, these bones are found in reptiles, and can you explain why god did this? Can you also explain why quorum sensing bacterium protects and can kill us at the same time,is god having a laugh?

I work in microbiology; I see mutations daily, these mutations chance cells, mostly the cells return to their original function

  • Cont.

But the odd occasions where cells dont fix themselves this change will be passed down to their offspring (microevolution) and then passed onto every generation there after which leads to macroevolution. Most people are happy to accept microevolution however; the difference between micro and macro is time.

Some people are born with 6 nipples and speaking of nipples why do, men have them?

I have encouraged my daughter to read the bible all of it mind you not just the good parts.

  • Cont.

Next youre going to tell me the world is 10k and not 3.5 to 4.5 billion years old and cant explain why the oldest tree is >10k and even though tree dating is the most accurate! and that noah had Titanosaur weighing 100 tonnes and Bruhathkayosaurus weighing 200 tonnes and the light from the distant star were put in place by god, which will then lead me to state god plays with the laws of physics and everything we through we know were true is actually a lie.

  • Cont.

Look at retrodictions in embryology, this shows evolution, we are fish like 0 - 4 wks inc the egg sack, we have our reptilian stage 5 - 6 wks and we have our human tail also at 6 months the foetus is fully covered in hair (Lanugo) just like our closes relatives the chimpanzees, the thing is we dont need hair in the womb because we are floating around in liquid. Evolution can explain this.

When you compare science to the bible the order of creation is opposite to what science says

  • Cont.

Earth created before the sun? when in fact the sun is much much older than the earth; creationists make excuses like well god made them in heaven then put them in our universe even knowing this does not say such a thing in scripture.

The pagans stole the ideas of mythology, horas/mithras both born on the 25th dec, virgin birth, healing the sick, walking on water, dying and resurrecting in the 3rd day, your belief system is ancient mythology today its better known as astronomy.

  • Sir you mistaken me for a young earth creationist, no I don't believe that the world is 10k years old, it's up to science to calculate that, which is 4.54 billion years old, no, I believe in theistic evolution as the Catholic church teaches, I share the view of Francis Collins, Nowak, Wilson, Conway-Morris and many others that God creates through evolution, and even if you mention all the imperfections of our anatomical biological makeup it still doesn't mean that there is no God

  • I'm sure you know full well as an ex-Catholic that the Church fully endorses the theory of evolution =)

  • I am fully aware of the Catholic Church stance on the matter of evolution. One of my favourite professors ie Prof. Ken Miller is an evolutionary biologist and a roman catholic. Obviously I dont believe in a god however, you and I can and do agree with evolution, god made or not. Thanks Loz

Thanks for your comment and can I thanks you for being of rational mind.

  • Well, thank you too for being rational and accommodating :)

  • And Albert Einstein, though he did not believe in a personal God, was none the less right when he said : Human knowledge and skills alone cannot lead humanity to a happy and dignified life. Humanity has every reason to place the proclaimers of high moral standards and values above the discoverers of objective truth."

  • That's why I don't understand why you new atheists insist that by studying the natural sciences it would necessarily lead to atheism and materialism, my grandfather was a biologists and he's in his 70's now and is a devout Roman Catholic, Gregor Mendel the father of genetics was a Catholic priest, other great biologists and botanists who were devout Christians are Asa Gray , Walcott and Dobzhansky,

  • If you study the natural sciences then you will end up conceding that the Universe is far older than the Bible says, there was no Adam and Eve, no forbidden fruit, no original sin and no need for a saviour.

If you argue all of the passages contained in the Bible which contradict current scientific knowledge were intended as metaphors then why stop there? If Noah never built an arc who's to say Jesus rose from the dead?

  • A literal interpretation of scripture will of course contradict current scientific knowledge, so Genesis should not be interpreted literally as the Catholic church says, and neither should the bible be used as a text book for science, for as a theologian once said and to which Galileo concurred : the Bible teaches us how to go to heaven not how the heavens go

  • You haven't answered my question:

If Noah never built an arc who's to say Jesus rose from the dead?

The Catholic Church has only stated that Genesis should not be interpreted literally because of the masses of evidence to the contrary. Before this evidence came along it was perfectly content with taking it literally. It has been forced to take a different stand for fear of looking absurd. It is frightened, Pope John Paul actually told Stephen Hawking not to study the beginning of the universe.

  • The fear of looking absurd as you say is your personal opinion on the matter, Saint Augustine and the early church fathers has clearly said that many Church teachings must conform to the advancement of science, however on the issue of the immortality of the soul, resurrection of the dead, the existence of divine providence is to be taken literally and not figuratively

  • I understand that the "issue of the immortality of the soul, resurrection of the dead, the existence of divine providence is to be taken literally and not figuratively", however my point still stands. If the church previously held that Genesis should be taken literally, but has since had to adjust its standpoint in recent times to avoid becoming irrelevant. How can anyone say with any certainty that the rest of the Bible should be taken literally? Do you at least see my point?

  • It is a shift from particular to universal in saying that because some part of scripture are held to be taken figuratively that the rest can be the same, that is not the case however, the bible is not comprised of one but rather many books put together, the exegesis of one book is not the same as another, however despite these different interpretative processes an unchangeable substrate of the bible is demonstrated through its' historical facts and prime theological ideologies

  • the apostle Peter was a fisherman of Bethsaida, if you for example would say that a different interpretation of the Bible can be offered saying that Peter was allegorical or that the existence and ministry of Jesus is metaphorical then that can never be so, but if we move the Revelation of St. John then Biblical hermeneutics tells us that the events foretold in it will not happen in a literal basis but rather figuratively

  • that is why Gould is right to say that "Either half my colleagues are enormously stupid, or else the science of Darwinism is fully compatible with conventional religious beliefs—and equally compatible with atheism" you sir have been reading Dawkins too much...

  • Interesting that their so called tolerance is totally intolerant of some one else's view point.

  • Just a question what if your child really sees the truth in the bible and also had a insight to the scriptures that sow seeds of doubt knowing that you have misinterpret the parable in the scripture or the direction of scripture. There is two sides to the gospel please do not close your mind to one I rather teach both.

  • Truth in the bible, as in the quran, vedas, bhagvad gita, upanishads, ramayan, guru granth sahib and the dhamma. This is exactly the stance I take, my daughter goes to a christian school, when she asked me about god, I told her that many people believe in different gods, and for the evidence they all have something in common, none of them can be proven, they are all based on faith and faith alone. Sorry, I retract one of these, buddhism dhamma, there is evidence to support him.

  • i'm all for telling god to fuck himself but themed summer camp are creepy no matter what its about...

  • interesting but in my opinion wierd

  • Hmm maybe I should start one in Cyprus :P But I think the Archbishop will burn me at the stake! :P

  • Will that be in a message from his all loving god?

  • Oh yes.. and his god needs money, lots of money so they can build a church every 10m in his honour... and don't forget they need money for all their gold crosses and jewellery :)

  • Scripture is useless, none can be proven (and loads of contradictions as I have already shown you), all you have is faith and faith alone, here in the uk the % of religious people is dropping by the week and in europe too, people are slowly beginning to wake up from this 2000 yr old story.

You are a Christian and therefore you dont believe allah, vishnu, shiva, krishna etc, and why dont you believe in their faiths? Once you realise this then you will discover why I dont believe in yours.

  • Oh don't worry Loz I ain't Christian :P I turned agnostic at the age of 16 and atheist quite soon after that. :)

I lived in UK for 3 years for university and I loved it... But I'm afraid in Cyprus religion unfortunately has embedded itself in our tradition and this is all people know. They don't care about sciences, or their own environment at that, and the majority of the people study shipping/accounting/business. But hopefully we'll catch up to the rest of Europe in about 100000 years lol.

  • Ephesians 1:4-5, 11

We are predestined by God to go to either heaven or hell. None of our thoughts, words, or actions can affect the final outcome, so how the hell (excuse the pun) do you get to heaven?

    1:7

God had his son murdered to keep himself from hurting others for things they didn't do?

    5:2

The bloody death of Jesus smelled good to God?

    5:6

Those who refuse to obey will face the wrath of God?

  • Cont..!

Luke 19:27 - Those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them—bring them here and kill them in front of me. - Jesus Christ

My daughter has just started asking questions about god, I will allow her to make up her own mind, but she will be mindful that the bible does not hold and all loving/knowing/powerful being.

  • He who believes is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God (John 3:18).

  • Every child born is an atheist, don't push them let them discover with there own intellect and time. Quit brainwashing them from the very start and let them decide for themselves. Kids will never know the truth from fairy tales if you don't leave them alone. Parents set the stage for the rest of their lives.

  • My daughter has just started asking questions about god, I will allow her to make up her own mind, but she will be mindful that the bible does not hold and all loving/knowing/powerful being.

  • @Dwicker64 Children are born Igtheist, not Atheist.
