vado the tank looks amazing do you get any smell off it because of not having a lid.. im just doing a bit of home work here because i want that tank!!! :)
Actually the only thing is that you lose two or three gallons a week in a heated room from it so have to keep it topped up, mind, must say my houseplants love it!! hehe.
Lighting is 2x life glo and power glo 35 watt tubes, (T8) they come standard with the Fluval.. The substrate is Carib-Sea Eco Complete which the plants have rooted into just wonderfully. Took about six bags of the stuff. The tank is much more mature now and nearing it's first year of setup. Visit my other (VadoVoodoo) vids to see its progress. Good Luck! John. :)
Hi Ollie.. I'm using dried fertilisers which are much cheaper than bottled robbery lol. I use Magnesium sulphate, Potassium Phosphate and a mix of trace elements dosing seperately @ half a teaspoon that approx 2.5ml each for my 54 gal tank of course I dissolve them in a little tankwater first so the fish dont swallow the stuff! :) I follow plant diagnostic charts and adjust the doses accordingly some people follow complicated charts and levels and stuff, etc, but if the plants look good... :)
Thank you both! It is nice to have a tank like this.. I just spend a lot of time watching all the activity and minor drama that goes on inside it, and get so much pleasure from seeing it develop and change.. Maybe after another four months it will have changed as much again! ? :)
Cheers Bod, a Plecostamus might be a bit overkill but I recently added three Otocintus cats and theyre max grown at about 25 - 30 mm (About an inch and a bit in old money..) and they are busy eating the algae.. But really the best defence and it's working very well is reduction of light period, and regular plant feeding (Ferts and Trace elements..) and water changes plus plant management cropping etc. Algae's nearly history now! :)

Hi Dickie, no M8, no smell, as long as there's no ammonia you wouldnt get that.. Water's fresh enough to drink.. mmmm glugglug. s'good.

@VadoVoodoo i think a pleco would help get rid of the algea. but it is a fantastic tank.
