@SilentPainTears By 'Iowa wont go backward' they mean they wont take back a law that they already issued, and on a more emotional level, give people a right then take it back. If you try to sound intelligent, dont start by acting stupid
I love when the righteous dredge up OLD TESTAMENT quotes to back up their poor mis-guided beliefs. Thou shalt not partake of the flesh of the filthy pig;... Have you enjoyed a ham sandwich lately? You've sinned! And, in the OLD TESTAMENT, it was preached not to consume the shell fish of the seas.... I know.. I know... But a shrimp dinner just tasts so good. You've sinned! And there is also something I found about not wearing blended thread, but, even I like poly-blended fabrics! Let go.
@moshady8008@silentpaintears not all citizens follow your religious beliefs. just because you believe it's wrong, what gives you the privilege to impose that viewpoint on everyone else? i think the sky is pink, i have 4 million people who will agree with me. does that make me right? no.
Great Job people of Iowa, I am so sick of hearing people try to take away peoples rights. Maybe marriage should be taken away from the religous bible thumping idiots across the country. It is pittiful.
I'm proud of Iowa. Why can't there be the opposite of Prop 8? I seriously encourage gay rights activists to try to get an initiative on the ballot in their states that legalizes same sex marriage. It may be tough, but I think it's achievable.
Great Video! Boy is sure does make Iowa look better than 'marriage apartheid' California.
I'm not sure why people think California is so liberal - it was illegal for Obama's parents to get married there because of their races (yea, so backwards it was then, and still is!)
Seems like Iowa is a leader again, and will help bring equality and justice to the rest of the USA.
I'm going to have so much fun being apart of the group that runs him out of office. Mr. Homosexual, you're days of authority are over. You'll be lucky to get a job at McDonalds after this.
Please note that the highly secretive DesMoines Register poll of Iowans concerning whether they suppor the latest court decision said 3:1 that they did NOT. Iowa Senators, let me vote!
Sir. I and those gay suicidal and depressed youth I work with thank you for standing up for humanity and the dignity of all. Most of the youth, as young as 12, that I have prevented from committing suicide are Christians
Just to let you know, there is a mistake in the transcript next to this announcement. At 0:54, Senator McCoy does not say gay AND straight but rather gay OR straight. For the record, as a bisexual, I'm not so sure I agree with that choice of words. :\
Does anyone else find it kind of funny that most of the earlier comments here supporting this rather awesome decision from Iowa seem to have exactly -4, whereas there are significant number of positives to balance out negative votes from the people who lack common sense and decency? Looks like some quartet decided to get uppity about the issue. XP
So, Iowa won't go backwards on "marriage rights", probably because their tractors won't go in reverse. So, they'll just make a u-turn on them and return to where the mistake was made and correct it.
So, what's next? Are we going to allow necrophiliacs to marry corpses? How about allowing pedophiles to marry children? No one is born gay. Homosexuality is a paraphilic disorder.
Polygamy could be next. I'm pretty sure they won't allow pedophiles to marry children or people marry to corpses. As long as consent between two or more people is given then I see no problem with them getting married.
Many of these supreme court justices were appointed by Governor Brandsad, a Republican. So this is hardly a partisan issue. Conservative Iowans will gripe for another week and then leave it alone, I'm sure.
Legislators and judges aren't always in tune with the will of the people. Given a chance, I'm certain Iowa voters would turn down homosexual marriage.
Thats why we have appointed them. To make legal decisions that are not influenced by religious beliefs/values. It is a legal matter and that is why legislators and judges have to step in, to defend their constitution from the religious masses.
but what about Massechusettes? (genuine question, how did SSM survive in Mass and not Cali? I heard it was 'cus it got on the ballot so much later that ppl. were used to it and it was a non-issue, and that this is likely to be the case in Iowa). Also, California only narrowly lost, it would narrowly win in a year or so if retaken, perhaps even now considering recent changes so your point isn't entirely valid for everywhere.
Actually the Bible does not mention long term monogamous homosexual relationships. The Bible only mentions homosexuality in a promiscuous sort of way. Find one place in the Bible that even mentions a long term monogamous homosexual relationships and I will be surprised.....it is not in the Bible! Promiscuity is unheathly no matter what a persons sexuality is.
"And it came to pass, when he [David] had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul . . . And Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul."
And immediately afterward, Jonathan DISROBED before David
I feel bad for your inferior intellect, neener. I feel worse that you would invite God's judgement by your attempt to make it seem as though the Bible endorses homosexual marriage. Of course, no one would ever buy your ridiculous assertion, but that doesn't change the fact that you are a pitiful person.
As soon as I can, and when this relationship im in buds into a union, im heading to Iowa, where my money, will support essential human rights, and my lifestyle will be deffended by the law. Iowa, leading the way of the world for equal protection to all its citizens, may you prosper and like a beakon, shedding light to a world that in total ignorance and darkness. You are living hope!
a monumental act of humaine decency in a world full of scared and fearful people.
Iowa has reserved it's place in the history books. A elegant statement that we are all created equal and should be afforded the same rights and treatment from out government I praise the supreme court of Iowa for preserving our nations tradition of freedom. Iowa your judiciary has served you well in protecting the rights of even the minorities. The future looks bright in Iowa. May Freedom live on in the heartland.
My freedoms are being trampled on by the Homosexual Agenda! My freedom to curtail the freedom of homosexuals is being curtailed! My husband owns his own business, and he needs to turn down homosexuals for business or employment because it goes against his faith. Now he can't do that. Now he can't turn down ANY sexual orientation that goes his against his religion, including heteroRace-sexual. Now he must accept those with an attraction to different-race people, which is a sin to us.
Iowa passes up giving "equal rights" to polygamists, who've been seeking to marry more than one spouse for years, and granted "equal rights" to homosexuals, who don't even need the right to marry. They just need to get their thinking straight and marry someone of the opposite sex, which the law allows them to do right now, no discrimination involved.
Separation of church and state. Keep the bible out of the law. This has NOTHING to do with religion. It is CIVIL RIGHTS. If you want to hate people using your religion to do so, fine, but keep it out of my life. This has NOTHING to do with you. And it never will.
gay people arnt hurting anything u sick bastards are. people SHOULD BE ABLE 2 LOVE WHO THEY WANT! and ya im from iowa and i DO BELIEVE IN THE BIBLE AND I DO BELIEVE IN JESUS CHRIST WHO DIED ON THE CROSS BUT IT DOES NOT STOP ME 2 BELIEVE THAT GAY MARRAIGE ISNT WRONG
Your bible isn't worth the paper its printed on. Not to mention your lovely republicans ran this country right into the ground and put us where we are now in the economy. Bush nearly killed this country.
YOU need to follow ALL of the rules in Leviticus if you're going to use it to fight against gay marriage. Don't cut your sideburns. Don't touch a woman on her period. Don't touch the skin of a dead pig. Don't mix fabrics ... on and on and on. IF you believe the Bible is absolutely literal in all aspects, then you should follow it completely. LEVITICUS was meant to rule the Israelites of the time, NOT today. By the way, how many times have YOU been married?
amerex your interpretation of the Bible regarding same sex love is extremely arcane and bigoted. There are answers in properly interpreting the Bible within its context that is not anti-gay and homophobic.
Spoken like a true republican - four grammatical errors in a nine word "sentence."
But you're correct - we should follow biblical principles. You know, stoning to death adulterers, children who don't respect their parents, shellfish eaters, and, of course, those who wear clothing of more than one fabric. Oh, wait, that would be EVERYONE!
Except that a governor and any other elected officiel is bound to uphold the values of the federal and state constitutions and laws and not the bible. This is every bodie's America not just yours.
I moved to Iowa from Chicago. While I miss the city of my birth in some respects, I love my adopted state of Iowa. I'm proud of our supreme court for unanimously supporting gay marriage. We are independent thinkers, as are most Americans. Way to go Iowa!!
So far there is no "wrath" of god, no one's marriage has become cheaper, and all you pro gay marriage folks, really, how much better is your life now? I'm not gay. I am a Christian man. Do I want gays to not have the same rights as me? No. I love how "bigot" is being thrown around. Having a belief is one thing. But if you are too prideful to even try to see another's point of view, then you're a bigot. Both sides do this. Don't take life too seriously, none of you are that important.
So it will be ok if gays vote on your private love life? Because that is what it comes down to. Straight people deciding who we can and cannot spend the rest of our lives with.
The funny thing is that all of your arguments can be thrown back at you. How much better was your life when gays couldn't marry in Iowa? The answer to your question is gays now have the right to marry in Iowa that they have not had elsewhere. from what i can tell so far, you want deny them right "just because"
bigot : one who regards or treats the members of a group (as a racial or ethnic group) with hatred and intolerance
must read this. once u have started there is no turning back. a little 10 year old girl was raped and murderded in 1945. her body was not found until 1947. then a boy last week read this and did not copy and paste this message. the dead girl appeared in his room haunting him and killed him. if you do not copy and paste this onto 10 vidoes in 30 minutes the dead girl will apear in your room tonight and haunt you and kill you. well you better start to copy and paste to be saved
The purpose of marriage is to turn strangers at law into next of kin. Any religious purposes should be held separate and not recognized by the government.
Religion has no place in state business, it is you that impedes on the civil rights of others. If religion is your best argument i suggest you retire from this topic. People came to america fleeing religious persecution, and now you want to impose your beliefs on every1? That to me, is un american, and not what this country stands for. Its is the land of equal opportunity, its about damn time it became the land of equal rights!
Your religion impede my logic, facts, and science. Get lost. The only sacred document in THIS country is the Constitution. If you want a theocracy, move to Afghanistan.
From a life-long Kansan just down the road, i am SOOOOOOO impressed with IOWA....WOW! I wish Kansas was as progressive as the Hawkeye State......i just may have to move to Iowa someday!
What about religions that accept it? Marriage is a civil contract in ALL states. THere is NO mention of religion in any marriage laws (Might have something to do with the FIrst Amendment, no?)
Please stop the hyperbole, it is not elevating the debate. First of all no one is born a polygamist. Polygamists are usually straight men who want to wed young girls to fulfill their sick sexual fantasies. Secondly dogs cannot consent to marriage, this is just absurd. I can respect some of my fellow Christians opposition to gay marriage in their church or congregation. But this is not about religion, this is about equal protection under the law. You can be anti-gay, the government can't.
How so? A religious institution can practice any way they please, and refuse to marry whomever they wish. Legal marriage is an issue of the state, and church and religious beliefs should have no bearings on the civil rights of human beings.
Yah, but they want to make a law that says the church can't teach marriage as a between one man and one woman. That is impeding on the first amendment in our constitution. There is your impeding on people's religious beliefs. Homosexuals have equal rights but yet we don't? Now that seems like a pretty good argument to me.
"they want to make a law that says the church can't teach marriage as a between one man and one woman."
This is simply not true. There is absolutely no proposed legislation that would prohibit a church teaching that marriage is one man, one woman. If a church wants to teach that marriage is only valid between two white people, they can teach that--laws that forced states to recognize inter-racial marriage had no impact on what churches can teach. The same is true of the current legislation.
The church can teach whatever it wants to its congregants. The state has no obligation to make its institutions reflect the church's values. Certain churches encourage polygamy, for example, but this doesn't mean that polygamy should be legal (and I'm not saying that polygamy shouldn't be legal — only that a church's endorsement of it should have no bearing on its legality).
I'm pretty sure that's wrong. The acts that legalize gay marriage almost all uniformly and specifically mention that they do not touch the churches or require any changes from churches at all.
Public schools, on the other hand, have the obligation to teach the truth. If gay marriage is legal, then it would be lying to children to say it is not. Also, to teach that gay marriage is bad in schools would be harmful to the children of gay parents.
The courts are specifically told not to rule from a religious point of view - that's why this was such a definitive victory for civil rights. There are little, if any, arguments against marriage equality that don't involve peoples' religious interpretations.
Ah, a touch of truth that hateful christians will never admit.
Of course, christians have no problem with disobeying their own commandment concerning lying. To hell with children of gay parents ("protect the children") - LYING is far better, in the "good" "christian" way.
Christians - keep your disgusting filth out of my life. I will, as always, GLADLY stay out of yours.
You obviously don't get it. Going the other way impedes on MY civil rights and religious beliefs. The church isn't supposed to impose it's views into law.
Thank you for for your faithful commitment strengthen cvil rights for all citizens. I commend you and your colleauges for advancing marriage equality so that all couples that wish to commit their lives to each other for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, to strenghten the fabric of the American family, may do so. God bless you, Matt McCoy.
I never knew these things about Iowa. It's nice to know some Midwestern states are progressive. I live in Kansas and I don't see gay marriage happening here anytime soon.
Why would I want to move to Iowa, where the people can have their rights stripped from them by a rag-tag band of oligarchs?
What makes them the authority on what is a civil right or not? Nothing.
This issue was for the people and their representitives to decide, not seven rats in black robes. This ruling was unconstitutional and those so-called judges should be thrown out on their asses.
Have you even READ the constitution? By definition a supreme court ruling cannot be unconstitutional--the constitution says what the supreme court says it says. That is the job of the court, to interpret the constitution. If the state supreme court says Iowa must recognize gay marriage then until that ruling is either overturned by a higher court or a subsequent ruling, or the constitution is amended, the Iowa constitution recognizes gay marriage. That's how constitutional law works.
Being against other people being able to do what they want without actually hurting another person is against not only some people's religious beliefs (i.e. "free will") but also many people's beliefs about what it means to be living in a democracy and not a theocracy. The Bush years are over, and any intelligent person can see through the religious rhetoric with unsubstantiated arguments.
Congradulations Senator McCoy! I am so glad that your state passed this law. Civil rights is what I am talking about. I know, I know, after living through the last 8 years, you might have forgotton that we actually do have a constitution, but that precious document will once again be the law of the land. The same people that are against gay marriage are the same people that said it would be the end of the world if blacks and whites married. Again, Congrats and Right On!
Technically the "law" was "passed" back when our constitution was ratified. It just took until today to be interpreted as protecting homosexuals from discriminatory, immoral laws such as the redefinition of civil marriage in 1998.
I think all the states bordering Iowa should begin erecting a wall, if the state legislature doesn't kill this horrible ruling from this activist, heathen court.
I LOVE my state....Iowa is a great place that has a "live...let live" mindset that believes in equality in all. It's not like this just dropped out of thin air...we have a HISTORY of equality for all Iowa citizens. I can't say the same for several of Iowa's neighboring states.
The only disgrace here is the blaring ignorance, idiocy, and total lack of redeeming humanity you show. You deserve to be treated as you treat your fellow man. In your case, you days should be filled with hate and intolerance. Don't worry, karma is a bitch and you'll get yours before the end.
Iowa deserves this for approving Democrat policies and turning against Jesus Christ. Remember Iowa is where Obama's campaign really took off. My only question is how far to the left Iowans are really willing to go. The liberal activist court forcing all Iowans to respect gay marriage is just the beginning. Soon the Bible will be outlawed. Guns will be taken away from law-abiding citizens. Finally children will start to disappear in the night and found the next day decapitated and dead. Just wait
You mention Jesus Christ and that is great. You problem is, (like most religious right's views), are that you think YOUR religion is above all others. That is where you get in trouble. The arrogance is astonishing. What makes this nation great is that we respect ALL religious views. Voting on religious views is EXTREMELY dangerous. That is why we have the CONSTITUTION. You know, the little "equal rights" thing.
Iowa needs to kick every liberal, leftist, gay and democrat out of office in the state. Anything short of this will mean gay marriages being forced down the throats of every church in the state. Christians will be outlawed, and sodomy will turn Iowa into a NY bathhouse.
You've really been in the news a lot lately, Matt. Congratulations on your hard work on gay and student issues. You are really a great public servant. I know that you are always thinking about the interests of our young people (although I wasn't too thrilled about your stance on the Pollock Mural-art like this can't be replaced!) Anyway, thanks and keep up the good work!
I'm a minister in Iowa who will happily welcome any who come to get married, regardless of orientation. The government has no business defining who or what constitutes a family. True Republicans and Conservatives should extend their abhorrence of government oversight to these "social" issues. No one can use their own beliefs as a basis to restrict the freedoms of others; that's as un-American as it gets. If you don't like American freedoms, get out.
njattack - why didn't you reply to me directly? By the way, CA voted on was what was alleged to be a CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT. You know WHY? Because the general law that was passed previously was found to be UNCONSTITUTIONAL. Like I said, you can't just put in a general law saying '"slavery is back" and then saying it is "democracy at work". You would have to REPEAL the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments. I DO like democracy, but not when it tramples on the CONSTITUTIONAL rights of people.
(cont'd) njattack, in 1964 the Supreme determined that bans against interracial marriage were UNCONSTITUTIONAL. Alabama kept their ban on their books until 2000, even though they were not able to ENFORCE that ban because it was UNCONSTITUTIONAL. Therefore, even though the "will of the people" was to ban interracial marriage, they still COULDN'T because it was UNCONSTITUTIONAL. Finally, under Iowa laws, it will be difficult to pass a Constitutional amendment.
The constitution explicitly prevents the majority from oppressing the minority. If you want a pure democracy, throw out the constitution; if you want a constitutional democracy, then constitution will sometimes trump the will of the masses.
Constitutional amendments have almost always served to increase individual liberty. The only exception was prohibition, and that was clearly a mistake. To pass an amendment that limits personal freedom in contrary to the spirit of the constitution itself.
I'm not sure you're right about that. According to a recent poll the majority of Iowans support state recognition of same-sex unions. Apparently, about 37% are against all same sex unions. About 26% support gay marriage, and about 28% oppose gay marriage, but support civil unions. This was reported in the Press Citizen.
Ok if you do not want there to be gay marriage, what you have to do is very simple.
Say YOU dont' have that right either.
Divorce your opposite gender spouse. Write laws saying the gov decides who you will love and marry. Arrest any straight person who marries for love instead of the law.
See how simple that is?
Because the only way you can say gays dont have a right to marriage is to make sure straight conservatives don't have that right either. No Special rights
The APA did remove homosexuality from its list of mental disorders. This is the same organization that labeled shyness as a mental disorder that could be treated.
It would seem obvious to anyone, except the APA, that homosexuaity is far more destructive to the human psyche than shyness, but when one wants to be politically correct, its best to lift the onus from those with the loudest lobbying group and put it on those who won't complain. The APA constantly makes revisions to their decisions.
I'm so glad Iowa has given all Americans equal rights in regards to the right of getting married. As a heterosexual who has been happily married for 20 years, I can assure you my marriage is not threatened by this action. And I can state that my faith does not condemn gays, but welcomes them as full members of my religious Order.
I said there is MORE evidence, I didn't say it was fact. I don't believe homosexuality is a mental disorder. There are no serious studies that provide any solid evidence that people are born gay. As far as in animals, whether you are referring to gestures of dominance shown by canines or bachelor herds in deer and elk, all that is natural and has nothing to do with homosexuality. Animals just are not born gay, it would be convenient for gays, but unfortunately they are alone.
Again, there is NO current evidence showing homosexuality to be a mental disorder - that is why they REMOVED it from the manual. Secondly, you need to look at Our Stolen Future - the studies are there. Also, I'm not just talking about "gestures of dominance" (though they are actually a sign of sexuality), I'm taling about actual studies that have shown animals shacking up with thse of the same sex - can range across the animal kingdom. Perhaps you should do some research.
Homosexuality is not a mental disorder, but the lack of acceptance of oneself as gay actually generates mental disorders.
Anyone who has known gays closely enough can testify this. Perpetually fleeing oneself creates brain chaos (also true for straights). But the true self is not gay only, it is also a lot of other things, and love is not limited to mariage, love is a feeling that anyone can experience for everyone or everything, either with family, partners, strangers, animals or vegetals.
"There are no serious studies that provide any solid evidence that people are born gay."
Wow, you follow the genetics literature? What's your favorite peer-reviewed journal?
"Animals just are not born gay"
Oh, I guess all the time you spend reading genetics journals leaves you no time to read the ethology journals. Homosexual behavior has been scientifically documented in over 1,500 species.
Why gay people are just so obsessed to imitate straights ? I really wonder
There are plenty other things to do in life apart from getting married, sad that gays are so desperately seeking for that little recognition.
If gays had balls and brain, they would invent a way of life that is not so close to what they are not. They are running after the rule of majority instead of transcending their own being.
If there are so many other things in life besides marriage why is it even a fundamental right in the first place? Why don't we go ahead and get ride of it.
Its sad that right wing bible thumpers have the lowed I.Q. rates in the country.
Mariage is a fundamental right for those who accept all rules of society are The Rules.
Who apart from society and religion has ever given any proof of this "fundamental right". This is just a human concept, why so desperately trying to stick to this formal, human made seal of approval, which is marriage ? Why ?
If IQ was a matter, you would have already given the right answer to this. But instead I am not right wing, I am not Bible fan, and I happen to score 138.
Society has no set rules, society at its core is the most immoral and vile being ever conceived. Humanity is the balancing factor. You don't deny others a right you enjoy. Simple as that. There is no argument against homosexuality that hold validity.
Not when a handfull of people tell the whole state or counuty faggots that dick each other in the ass can get married. then it become s a socialist state or country. To be democratic republic it must come from the people. The State Senate is not acting of the wishes of the people but the faggot agenda of the faggot senators.
"The people" don't get to decide on other people's civil rights, you whining wingnut. Look up the phrase "tyranny of the majority." Go back to FreeRepublic and STFU.
There is no discrimination against gays with regard to marriage. They have the same opportunity to wed members of the opposite sex as hetero's do. It is there own choice which prevents them. They want to change the meaning of marriage...which is what people object to. Should we change the word vegetarian to include people who eat meat? No, because the word would then lose its meaning.
The GOV needs to separate "Church" and "State"....and provide equal opportunity to all its TAX PAYING CITIZENS, not just 80-95%!
Civil Union is a State Operation.
"Marriage" in the traditional sense (with priest) is obviously a Religious Ceremony ... and the State can not impose on that (1st Amendment, Freedom of Religion). The State should not recognize a religious ceremony as an official union....for tax purpose, an official union should be "stamped" by state.
This to me is a non-issue. If you don't agree with marriage equality, don't marry someone of the same sex! As a school teacher, I don't ever recall reading/citing the words.."with liberty and justice for ALL" and seeing the word, "except". Separate but equal does not, has not and should not work. We can not "eenie meenie miney moe" through our neighborhoods and point to who is allowed marriage or not. As a christian and American, I am for equality, love, and acceptance to all human life. :)
This is pointless. You are talking about catering to a people based on their PREFERENCE. If a person PREFERS to bang sheep should he get tax breaks for being a sheep farmer? It isn't a civil rights issue as liberals fantasize. Do you really think MLK would march for gay marriage? Hell no. This has nothing to do with bigotry, or prejudice, people are just really sick of the gay community's bitching and attention grabbing. It has nothing to do with equality.
There is no evidence supporting the "born gay" theory. Actually there is dramatically more evidence that it is a mental disorder. I still say it is just a preference and you are an idiot.
@SilentPainTears By 'Iowa wont go backward' they mean they wont take back a law that they already issued, and on a more emotional level, give people a right then take it back. If you try to sound intelligent, dont start by acting stupid

Remember, Paul was not dealing with Americans being denied equal treatment under the US Constitution by other Americans.
Paul was not consulted in the drafting of the Constitution and still has no say in the matter.

Thats why we have appointed them. To make legal decisions that are not influenced by religious beliefs/values. It is a legal matter and that is why legislators and judges have to step in, to defend their constitution from the religious masses.

Seeing as how Iowa is a leading farming state with a huge # of cattle, this is just another example of the manure produced by the state.

Really I would like someone to explain it to me.
Where gay marriage is legal people can still attend church, pray and still believe whatever they want (including that being gay is evil)
So where in the Bible does it say christianity is about who you harm and keep from being able to do stuff you take for granted?
Because the parts I recall Jesus saying made it clear being anti-gay is immoral.

You can be anti-gay, the government can't.
plutogirllovekj 2 years ago
No, that's not right. You can't marry two women or your dog...This does not make bigomy legal and your dog can't sign the marriage license.
kukubuddy 2 years ago
How so? A religious institution can practice any way they please, and refuse to marry whomever they wish. Legal marriage is an issue of the state, and church and religious beliefs should have no bearings on the civil rights of human beings.
Seanconwell 2 years ago 2
Yah, but they want to make a law that says the church can't teach marriage as a between one man and one woman. That is impeding on the first amendment in our constitution. There is your impeding on people's religious beliefs. Homosexuals have equal rights but yet we don't? Now that seems like a pretty good argument to me.
STOF55 2 years ago
"they want to make a law that says the church can't teach marriage as a between one man and one woman."
This is simply not true. There is absolutely no proposed legislation that would prohibit a church teaching that marriage is one man, one woman. If a church wants to teach that marriage is only valid between two white people, they can teach that--laws that forced states to recognize inter-racial marriage had no impact on what churches can teach. The same is true of the current legislation.
SisyphusRedeemed 2 years ago
The church can teach whatever it wants to its congregants. The state has no obligation to make its institutions reflect the church's values. Certain churches encourage polygamy, for example, but this doesn't mean that polygamy should be legal (and I'm not saying that polygamy shouldn't be legal — only that a church's endorsement of it should have no bearing on its legality).
markleopard 2 years ago
I'm pretty sure that's wrong. The acts that legalize gay marriage almost all uniformly and specifically mention that they do not touch the churches or require any changes from churches at all.
Public schools, on the other hand, have the obligation to teach the truth. If gay marriage is legal, then it would be lying to children to say it is not. Also, to teach that gay marriage is bad in schools would be harmful to the children of gay parents.
Ophidimancer 2 years ago 17
The courts are specifically told not to rule from a religious point of view - that's why this was such a definitive victory for civil rights. There are little, if any, arguments against marriage equality that don't involve peoples' religious interpretations.
slincolnwx 2 years ago 3
Ah, a touch of truth that hateful christians will never admit.
Of course, christians have no problem with disobeying their own commandment concerning lying. To hell with children of gay parents ("protect the children") - LYING is far better, in the "good" "christian" way.

BelieveIt1051 2 years ago
Have you even READ the constitution? By definition a supreme court ruling cannot be unconstitutional--the constitution says what the supreme court says it says. That is the job of the court, to interpret the constitution. If the state supreme court says Iowa must recognize gay marriage then until that ruling is either overturned by a higher court or a subsequent ruling, or the constitution is amended, the Iowa constitution recognizes gay marriage. That's how constitutional law works.
SisyphusRedeemed 2 years ago

Being against other people being able to do what they want without actually hurting another person is against not only some people's religious beliefs (i.e. "free will") but also many people's beliefs about what it means to be living in a democracy and not a theocracy.
Flegetanis 2 years ago
technicschic - you are a screwball not to mention a poor propagandist.
The people of California have voted: NO same-sex marriages. That was Democracy at work. "Of, by and for the people."
The people of Iowa will do the same as well as the other 48 states if it becomes necessary.
If you don't like democracy then leave.
Comparrisions would be Prohibition or Womens Suffrage.
I imagine a Const Amend will be passed making marriage as 1 man & 1 woman. Americans will demand it.
njattack 2 years ago
njattack - why didn't you reply to me directly? By the way, CA voted on was what was alleged to be a CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT. You know WHY? Because the general law that was passed previously was found to be UNCONSTITUTIONAL. Like I said, you can't just put in a general law saying '"slavery is back" and then saying it is "democracy at work". You would have to REPEAL the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments. I DO like democracy, but not when it tramples on the CONSTITUTIONAL rights of people.
technicschic 2 years ago
(cont'd) njattack, in 1964 the Supreme determined that bans against interracial marriage were UNCONSTITUTIONAL. Alabama kept their ban on their books until 2000, even though they were not able to ENFORCE that ban because it was UNCONSTITUTIONAL. Therefore, even though the "will of the people" was to ban interracial marriage, they still COULDN'T because it was UNCONSTITUTIONAL. Finally, under Iowa laws, it will be difficult to pass a Constitutional amendment.
technicschic 2 years ago
The constitution explicitly prevents the majority from oppressing the minority. If you want a pure democracy, throw out the constitution; if you want a constitutional democracy, then constitution will sometimes trump the will of the masses.
Constitutional amendments have almost always served to increase individual liberty. The only exception was prohibition, and that was clearly a mistake. To pass an amendment that limits personal freedom in contrary to the spirit of the constitution itself.
SisyphusRedeemed 2 years ago

I'll be holding my breath.

And I can state that my faith does not condemn gays, but welcomes them as full members of my religious Order.
ayeshahaqqiqa 2 years ago
I said there is MORE evidence, I didn't say it was fact. I don't believe homosexuality is a mental disorder. There are no serious studies that provide any solid evidence that people are born gay. As far as in animals, whether you are referring to gestures of dominance shown by canines or bachelor herds in deer and elk, all that is natural and has nothing to do with homosexuality. Animals just are not born gay, it would be convenient for gays, but unfortunately they are alone.
Ericjpomeroy 2 years ago

The word "backwards" is YOUR term. You have no idea how many Christians and people of other faiths have been offended and hurt by this decision.

I'm offended that you believe your faith gives you the right to hold yourself above others.

"Why Iowa won't go backwards on marriage rights"
It already did !
I used to be gay...

Your babbling and being a hypocrite in circles.
If there are so many other things in life besides marriage why is it even a fundamental right in the first place? Why don't we go ahead and get ride of it.
Its sad that right wing bible thumpers have the lowed I.Q. rates in the country.
sabboth42 2 years ago
Mariage is a fundamental right for those who accept all rules of society are The Rules.
Who apart from society and religion has ever given any proof of this "fundamental right". This is just a human concept, why so desperately trying to stick to this formal, human made seal of approval, which is marriage ? Why ?
If IQ was a matter, you would have already given the right answer to this. But instead I am not right wing, I am not Bible fan, and I happen to score 138.
Nothing is sad !

Society has no set rules, society at its core is the most immoral and vile being ever conceived. Humanity is the balancing factor. You don't deny others a right you enjoy. Simple as that. There is no argument against homosexuality that hold validity.

Apparently you are completely unaware that the U.S. is a democratic republic.
Educate yourself.

Now what ?Proud pedophile pay taxes, have children.Black day for family oriented people.

Are you so blind by your ignorance you can't see how obviously self-evident it is that people are BORN gay
784950 2 years ago
There is no evidence supporting the "born gay" theory. Actually there is dramatically more evidence that it is a mental disorder. I still say it is just a preference and you are an idiot.
