Great video. I still can't get the aro down right. But, just like your friend. When I tried an English (HH Vintage Syrian) the light switch went off. If it wasn't for that I probably would have never continued with the pipe..
If there were only aromatic tobacco, i wouldnt smoke anymore. Lets get to the Big "B" that freehand Balkovec is insane. Thats the third one this week I have seen. Great video and topic along with an amazing pipe.
Well when sitting with a rookie smoker we can only let them sample what we have. After that I can get a sense of where to lead them but I generally say try as many blends as you can. I stress smoking real slow too.
I need to get a sample of Northwoods and a sample of Christmas Cookie I think, I keep hearing about them and I am curious now! Haha you make me want to try them.
@bolwerkm Those are the only two Boswell's blends I've ever tried, but I think they are very good. I can certainly recommend that you give them a go sometime.
I think it is difficult to suggest to "new" pipe smokers. What I've come to realize is we should all start with pure tobaccos first...Burly, Virginia, etc that way we figure put much more quickly the flavours that we like. Then blends start to make more sense...that's my 2 cents.
Obviously different things will appeal to different people. However, I think some things to consider may be, have they smoked anything before? For example, someone who has smoked premium cigars may automatically gravitate towards non-aromatic pipe tobacco, whereas first time smokers of any kind may prefer the lighter aromatic blends like a Lane 1Q or something like that.
I think the three type of tobacco suggestion is a good one since everyone's taste buds are different. What works for one may not work for another. Good subject. Jay
@SmokingDagners Yeah, I guess there's a reason there are a zillion different pipe tobaccos out there. I agree with you and Matches about giving new pipe smokers a few different types to try.
I think Jay touched on this subject a month or so ago. We tend to point newbies to aromatics, when that may not be the ideal choice given the individual. I guess it may be best to suggest three totally different tobaccos to try.
