Butch Miles one of the greatest drummers of all time, fantastic solo. You make it look easy but of course great skill involved. You always look so happy and glad to be playing, others should use you as an example.
This is a fantastic sounding band. Great solos all round but the highlight for me is the drum solo. So much light and shade and I can hear patterns in the snare drum work that go right back to Zutty Singleton and Baby Dodds. So often drum solos are sadly just all about noise and crashing about. This is definitely the exception. Superb.
Hey guys, thanks for the comments. Just in case there's anyone who doesn't know it - I left the Basie Band one year ago last June. FYI, don't know if the drum chair has been permanently filled.
@440864 Mr. Miles: I just listened to you with tha Basie band doing Hefti's "Whirlybird". What can I say? Pure genius, sublime - words cannot do justice to the brilliance of your talent. Thank you for being you.
Hey, thanks for writing. I wish you played with Basie last summer - the gig at the Empire Plaza in Albany. I enjoyed the band, but you're much more enjoyable to watch than the other drummer (no offense). You always seem just so happy to be there.
Yeah. Whenever you're in Albany or Catskill I tell Maurice (calism23) that we gotta go see this guy, he's the last of the great big band drummers. Whenever you're in town I always e-mail Aaron Woodward and ask 'Is Butch playing?'. There's not enough of you on YouTube. If you have anything to upload, put it on.
BTW, if you're ever not playing and the band needs a drummer, I can do it. Check out my videos to see. And I can sight-read really well. Hook me up!
Thanks a million for posting this and the rest of the clips! After having enjoyed the album for many years which this hell of a band recorded prior to touring Japan, now at last, thanks to you "SwingCla", the visual experience.
there's a reason why there's no dislikes on this video. Amazing job!!!

I love it..I've done a few gigs with Buddy DeFranco..I'm a vocalist. Terry Gibbs was on one of them, and Larry Novack on piano. Was a thrill.
