I AWARD THIS 4 DRESDENS...Lots of literal mechanical phrases with sensitive tones.1 event after another glides by without differ-entiation. Let's redub this, the monodimension-al,monochromatic Schumann,"in spite of the obvious desires of the expression to do other-wise."Fine sonority & an occasional sforzando aren't but a fraction of what the dimensioning
that must be added to a score which contains nothing but physical pitch relationships.
I love her smile during the performance; it seems to be satisfaction at a job well under way; not narcism, not show. Schumann's is an ensemble work and the orchestra and soloist have to work together with each taking turns carrying the theme; the blending is critical and the timing for entries etc is also critical and very difficult. It is one of the easier concertos but is one of the hardest to get right; something like Beethoven's Moonlight. Subtlety.
I have seen Helene in person, and other greats too, like Ashkenasy. She is wonderful. Barenboim likes her playing too, and he's quite a good judge, I would say.
She is not acting. She really feels that. Anyway, probably there are better pianists, but if she's beauty that's not her fault. Just don´t look at her, I don`t look Ushida either, she is ugly, that means nothing. You can´t ask her to be less atractive. Criticize the music, not the face.
Everybody are worth or the same as lirical singers always criticizing each others!!!! Musical word.." la musique n'adoucit pas les moeurs" chez les musiciens.... J'adore Argherich et Grimaud et d'autres. Le piano est si difficile mais si beau!
Interestingly enough I heard her in the Beethoven 4th concerto around a year ago and i rather liked her! not perhaps to everyone's tastes, but it was worth the train fair and ticket so it must have been ok!
It's just a matter of taste. Her playing strikes me as very genuine and passionate. I can not dispute that she may have given a poor performance in concert, (I have never seen her in person) but in general, she strikes me as genuine and heartfelt. I thoroughly enjoy her playing.
She played good this time but skipped two notes. She should focus more to her playing. Someone should remind her that she was not an actress. If she realizes that then she will probably play better.
I agree with nickfox2.I saw her play Brahms Concerto #1 with the LA Phil and it sounded like she was playing with ski gloves on.She clearly did not have enough control of the keyboard, so she couldn't infuse it with any feeling or nuance. It was just playing the notes - and embarrassingly sloppily at that. I noticed some members of the orchestra expressing frustration with her inconsistent tempo and bungled passages. She is definitely not in the same league with Bronfman, Uchida,or Pogorelich.
Beautiful playing. Some of you seem to be deaf or unsensitive...Go to her concerts and you will change your mind... She is a true artist. May be too much depth for some people to understand...
I agree 100 per cent. I am very interested in someone explaining to me why this pianist has a major career playing with major orchestras and conductors and making recording on major labels. Please, explain it to me!! Tell me how she's doing anything more than playing the notes.
Sorry, she had skipped the two notes within some other video. My mistake. But I still don't like her performance. It depends of what one expects from a pianist, just play the notes? Some works are so beautiful that it can cover the pianist's flaws.
It's first time to see a real recording video. Is that album is non-cutted?
Actually, I think her musical talent is pretty over-estimated(especially in concertos, I really disappointed..) but not this recording. pretty good.

Tremendous! Obviously loves this repertoire more than the Bach and Chopin clips I've just struggled through.

Why is it cut in the middle....?

If you want to hear a great recording of this piece, try Claudio Arrau. You haven't heard the Schumann Concerto until you've heard him play it.

Grimaud plays every piece with a determination to present them at it's most cumulative experience, un-surpassed effort in this difficult work

Grimaud is to the piano as Hilary Hahn is to the violin...passionate, energetic and exquisite.

Grimaud has a particular rapport with the works of Schumann and Brahms, and clips of her playing their works here are among the best anywhere.

Nobody can deny that Grimaud manages to play all the notes. That was probably her main goal.
