@MrTennesseeVols yes, but is not like Napoleon III had any other choice, Prussia went to war against France, so he needed the army, so, in the end, Maximilian's only mistake (a fatal one) was relying to much on the french army, insetad of making an Imperial Mexican army of his own...

The sad fact is that Juarez and Maximilian wanted the same things. Maximilian was a liberal who wanted the best for Mexico. However he was backed by Conservatives and so when the French pulled out he did not have the most loyal people protecting him.

Juarez wanted to wipe out religion in Mexico, wanted basically a socialist republic with land seizure and wealth redistribution and made agreements to basically make the place a U.S. protectorate. Maximilian wanted Mexico to be the dominant power in Central America and the Gulf of Mexico, a great empire that would be an example of stable, modern constitutional monarchy.

From there, I simply began taking into other royalty and thus came to the conclusion that just maybe all the republic rhetoric I've been fed is BS. Yes, mexico went down after maximilian because for democracy to work the people must be educated and care about politics but that just never happened in mexico that's why the governement did and still does whatever the hell it wants.Maximilian was diferent he wanted to create a real nation and was more patriotic than any actual mexican politician.

I ask everyone who favors Juarez and slanders Maximilian; why would the US favor Juarez over Maximilian. When did the US in the 1800's *ever* follow a policy that was to the benefit of Mexico? The US favored the republic because they wanted to keep Mexico poor, weak, divided and easy to dominate. Maximilian wanted Mexico to be a great power not a beggar on America's doorstep.
