I really like this performance of one of my favourite arias. She avoids being over dramatic, makes some original embellishments, and her dark tone is quite lovely. A very thoughtful musician.
I agree, with this being a half-step down her diction should be flawless. Also, with such little movement and staging, it should only make facial expression and gestures easy to do because she doesn't have to remember complicated steps. She seems a little empty, blank even.
Nice color, but this is the wrong key...I've never heard this aria done a half step down! She almost has a mezzoish color...I don't hear Fleming at all, but Ms. Byström has a definite future ahead of her.I also noticed that her diction really is not that good which one would think that if she is a soprano, taking this down a half-step would make the diction a lot easier. Her color is confusing me, but I like it. I just can't decide what other repertoire she would be comfortable doing.
This is the "correct" key.... Everybody else does it at the wrong one. As crazy as it sounds...
You see original instrument orchestras like this one are tuned half a step down, so that is the key Mozart would have known and heard!
The high tuning of orchestras started late 19th century and it became globally accepted in the 20th century. Some great composers like Verdi often disagreed with this new "fashion" when it started appearing more and more often.
@dramaticsoprano01 I´ve heard her Marguerite from Faust and last week her Thaïs here in Gothenburg and she was marvellous. I think the french romantic repertoire is good for her, maybe Elsa and Elisabeth as well in the future?
Really, a cold performance. I'm not sure I liked the interpolations and other strange things that she did to the music. She seems to be running out of breath and her legato was choppy, however this could be due to the conducting. Nonetheless, the voice is gorgeous.
I agree there is something comparable in warmth in the sound, very nice for a lyrical soprano. But I guess she at this moment does not have the beautiful legato Fleming has. And Fleming puts more voice in the mask, which gives the sound some brilliance and lightness Malin not have at this moment IMO.
I just heard her sing a short recital at the House of Sweden in Washington, DC and found her incredibly expressive (all other voice and appearance attributes aside). She has such a powerful voice that it was probably hard to contain with just 60 people in the room. In the few comments she made, she also appears to have a great sense of humor. Hope to see her a performance in the future!
She is a pretty girl and has a very nice voice that and is well trained. I think she is a little cold and I have a feeling she's singing about the winding little brook instead of I am seeking vengeance for the one who killed my bloody father. Perhaps she is concentrating on the technique. I have a feeling that's the case.
At least her singing is really good. I think her Donna Anna is still frightened after finding out that her lover is Don Giovanni. Donna Anna is not necessarily as strong or vindictive as her words suggest (everybody lies!). There is a whole range of subtext that a singer could chose to portray and still create a complex character.
not, ottavio is her fiance, not the same thing. if you assume that she either let don giovanni in in the first scene, or was preventing him from leaving after he had let himself in then it falls to reason that she has or had a very deep sexual desire for don giovanni. that's what i mean by lover.
@petatap Oh wow, I have often wondered about the romantic intention of D Anna....do you know the resource for this information? I am researching for an upcoming performance.
Nice voice but a pity every attempt for something like a legato line is immediately killed by Rene Jacobs who obviously has to catch one train earlier.....
Wow! Vilken röst!...She's great...I didn't even know she existed although I'm swedish and a devouted opera fan. Must check when she is coming home to sing...
I contacted the Publicity office of Harmonia Mundi. And the tentative release date for Jacobs' Don Giovanni is October 2, 2007. The cast will be different then. Johannes Weisser will be in the Title Role, Lorenzo Regazzo as Leporello, Sunghae Im as Zerlina, and Alexandrina Pendatchanska as Elvira.
Damn! Girlie can sing! So wasn't expecting this voice out of this video (to be honest, I thought she was too young and ...delicate...looking). But I stand corrected. She's a bit of a stiff actor, but she's young and has time to work on that. Brava!

She has a "darker" timbre, I want to say, I love it! I think she could sing a little more free, but she definately deserves to be singing at the Met!

She will be making her Met Opera debut this 2011-2012 season.
I like her voice. Two Thumbs Up!

Actually I like this performance - a different darker timbre than I am used to, but still quite lovely.

Tecnically not too good, and not a good actress also. 2/5.

dans sa voix il y a aucune force, aucune rage, elle n'est pas expressive, ni dramatique... bref, raté!

But that's all NOT what she says in the accompagnato before "Or sai..."...
I think the "lover"-thing is a bit overinterpreted

It is an old Argument. E.T.A. Hoffmann saw her in love with D.G., not with Don Ottavio.

The genius of her voice is parallelled only by her utter lack of talent as an actress. What a shame.
