It so surprises me the mean spirited comments I see on these type of U Tubes. You are all pure love and light. Wake up to who you are! This man was a complex amazing human. My guess is he wrote a song from his heart. Who knows what his true motivations were, but I choose to believe he was a open minded and hearted person who was searching for meaning in this crazy world and answers to the questions we all have deep in our consciousness. Why am I here and what comes after. Love and light!

More interesting than all this religious talk, I remember hearing on some radio program (maybe by Casey Kasem) that the distorted guitar sound in the song was unintentional and instead was the result of a poorly grounded guitar amp connector. They liked the sound so much, they kept it in the production. My own observation - I don't know if it was written this way, but that delayed chord change at the end of some of the lines really makes the song :-)
