She still had her hard points on. I'm shocked the ministry allowed them to be left on. The US did not like the idea that a F-86 coming back to the states and wanted it cut up at the wing roots and in two, demilling it. The pols got involved and forced the issue, allow the F-86 to come back intact and it flies to this day.
There is a really good book about the early days of british jet aviation called Empire of the Clouds. its a really good read and full of information about the test pilots like Bill Waterton and what they went through testing new jets, many of them died as a lot of the jets were unsafe but the indusrty didnt seem to care they just wanted to get their order books full from the MOD..
Such a pity the development of this beautiful aircraft was blighted by a crash of the prototype DH 110 in 1950 at the Farnborough Airshow which killed 11 and the test pilot John Derry when one engine "fell out" in a Mach 1 dive and crahed into the crowd. It took another 9 years before the Sea Vixen entered service with the Fleet Air Arm.
I'm watching her now out of my window as we speak. I live in Bournemouth and every year there is an airshow at the end of August, but they start practising about a month prior to the show. Thought it was a vampire at first but as it came over i realised my mistake.
Very cool to see this bird fly again, looks like it handels well! So, who got the Airfix 1/48 scale Sea Vixen kit? I've yet to, hobby stores are few and far between these days.
I remember seeing some in the hangar at Halton in 1986 when we were there with the air cadets. We weren't even allowed to climb up the cockpit ladder because they were so fatigued the techies there were worried that a bunch of cadets jumping around would do some damage. So lovely to see one flying again!
Can anyone please tell me? What happened to Brian? Has he retired? I met him once at Bournemouth Airport, just after the Vixen came into land. Really nice chap. Can anyone help?
would love to be in Matt Whitfield's shoes...taking over from Brian Grant and displaying such an awesome, rare and powerful fighter at such a young age.
@jamcrane3 the observer sits to the left of the pilot. The top of his cockpit is at fuselage level. There is a small transparent window for him flush with the upper surface
@eskimosailor Thanks for the explanation. It is a very impressive aircraft.
I love airplanes, even though I am not an aviator. Probably the closest I'll ever get to flying will be with a powered parachute, but hey, that'll be alright too.
I must agree with wibble about the nice colour scheme, what always makes me laugh is the way the cockpit isnt in the middle..strange, but it works ;) Nice filming mate, love the loop, very smoothly followed 5*
Beautiful jet.

I love 50´s and 60's era jets, the Vulcan is another favorite, as the Vixen and F-104.

Wonderful aircraft! I love the soundtrack. The subtle wistle over the deep grunt as she's tearing up the air... Brilliant!
Thanks for sharing. :)

It's so there is room for the navigator who sits in the 'coal hole' next to the cockpit

What a trip. Can see it fairly well at about 0:58 .
Doesn't seem like a very good place to 'observe'.
Anyway, I agree with everyone else: beautiful jet.
