Oh Wow!! A Herod who actually sings the notes as written! And what a singer. Patzak was jogging on a bit by 1960 but this performance is as good as any you wil hear. I've never heard or seen Maria Kouba before but am very impressed. Is there a complete performance of this available in any format? Many Many thanks for posting.
Patzak is one of the great Lieder singers on record. As a young man, the voice was meltingly beautiful and he sang nearly all the romantic tenor lead roles. Later on, most famous for Herod and Florestan. An incredibly powerful (but yes, natural and understated) actor both vocally and (as proven with this video) physically.... of course, according to the NY Times, no one knew how to act in opera until Gelb took over the Met. Hahaha.
The German is perfectly enunciated and clear. Every word is understandable without subtitles, and the orchestral balance is wonderful. I am amazed at the high quality of this early television production. This is a conversational passage, beautifully executed.
que bello canta esta mujer!! she¨s is delightful, that full and brilliant tone, I love her, the Herodes is also a natural voice, like it very much, thank you.

Wonderful to see the great Julius Patzak, such a personality, his understatement is superb... what more could you wish for in a Herod
